An Israeli COVID-19 breath test has correctly identified all positive patients in a clinical trial in Wuhan, China, according to a newly peer-reviewed study.

The device uses nanotechnology to identify compounds from the lung that are present in the breath of coronavirus patients, Prof. Hossam Haick of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology told The Times of Israel on Friday.
He said that it is fully automatic, eliminating the need for anyone to come in to contact with the patient to handle their sample, which is good for efficiency and for hygiene.

“You just blow into the device, which is the size of a smartphone, for 2 to 3 seconds, from a distance of 2 centimeters away,” he said. “There are no accessories, it requires no lab processing, and it gives results within 30 seconds of blowing.”

The current prototypes of the device are half-held, but Haick said that the final product will require no touch, meaning that the “danger of cross-contamination is very low.”
The technology is being developed for the market by the company Nanose Medical, where Haick serves as chief technology officer, and he predicted tests will cost around $2 to $3 per person.
The clinical trial examined 140 people, 49 of them confirmed coronavirus patients. It identified all carriers as coronavirus positive, but erred with the results of seven healthy people, reporting them to be positive.
Regular swab tests also throw up some false positives, but it’s not known exactly how many, as people often assume their result is correct and they are asymptomatic. Doctors are less concerned about false positives, which can cause inconvenience by needlessly worrying and quarantining people, than false negatives that can lead people to assume wrongly they are virus-free and spread the coronavirus.

Haick said that in his design, he emphasized accurate assessment of people who are sick, but with respiratory conditions other than coronavirus. “Think about winter time, when people will have lots of conditions, such as influenza and colds, that make them feel sick but aren’t COVID-19, and it’s very important we can differentiate between them correctly,” he commented.
While there is a flurry of reports about new fast-testing technologies, Haick said that his has credentials to prove its seriousness.
The trial was approved by authorities in China, and, unlike some other innovations, results have been peer-reviewed and published earlier this week in a scientific journal, ACS Nano. “This was peer-reviewed, which is important, as it indicates we are meeting the standards of the scientific community,” said Haick.

He has developed the test, together with Technion colleague Yoav Broza and researchers from Wuhan, based on a device he invented a few years ago for detecting cancer.
This cancer test isn’t in use yet, as it is still undergoing assessment by regulators, but Haick expects the coronavirus version to be accredited quickly due to the urgency of COVID testing.
“If everything goes well with further clinical studies, I hope it will be available and regulated within six months,” he said.
The test is one of several innovations being worked on in Israel, including a new ultra-fast gargle-and-spit test, to replace PCR testing, which includes an unpleasant swabbing process and requires lengthy lab analysis, as the main screening method used worldwide.
PCR tests are believed to be around 80% accurate. Accelerated PCR testing, the fastest current method, is not widely available and with a 15-minute turnaround at its best, comes at a financial cost and with a reduction in accuracy levels.

Trump accuses drug authority of delaying COVID-19 vaccine

US President Donald Trump has accused America's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of purposefully delaying coronavirus vaccine trials until after the upcoming Presidential election.

On Twitter, the President said the deep state or someone at the FDA is making vaccine trial approvals difficult on purpose, and the body should instead focus on speed and saving lives.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the President's comments are scary.

"This was a very dangerous statement on the part of the president," Ms Pelosi said.

"Even for him it went beyond the pale in terms of how he would jeopardise the health and well being of the American people and accuse FDA [of] politics when he is the one who has tried to inject himself [into] the scientific decisions."

Global coronavirus death toll surpasses 800,000, WHO hopes it will be over in two years

Global coronavirus deaths surged past 800,000 people on Saturday, according to Johns Hopkins University data, which came less than 24 hours after the World Health Organization said it hoped the pandemic would last for less than two years.

Cases took an upward turn in eastern European countries Saturday as Ukraine recorded 2,328 new cases and 37 deaths between Friday and Saturday, figures from the national council of security and defense showed.

Yulia Tymoshenko tests positive for coronavirus, ex-PM in ‘serious condition’ as Ukraine struggles with big rise in infections
    23 Aug, 2020

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is struggling with a fever after testing positive for coronavirus. The country has seen an upswing in new Covid-19 cases in recent weeks.

The news was confirmed by Tymoshenko’s spokesperson, Marina Soroka. “Yes, unfortunately, it is true. The test showed that Yulia has Covid-19. Her condition was identified as serious. Her temperature reached 39 Celsius,” she wrote on social media.

Tymoshenko briefly served as prime minister in 2005 and later held the same office from 2007-2010, as well as running for president three times. She currently leads the opposition Fatherland (Batkivshchyna) party in Ukraine’s parliament.Ukraine’s ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has stunned the public and media by saying in her income declaration that she got $5.5 million from a “US resident” as compensation for Ukrainian government “repressions.”

A financial disclosure statement filed in late April by Tymoshenko, who now serves as an MP in Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, says she received a whopping 148 million hryvnias ($5.5 million) as part of a pre-trial settlement in a case filed over her persecution at the hands of the Ukrainian authorities back in 2011-2014.

Yet, Tymoshenko’s declaration doesn’t disclose anything about the lawsuit, besides the name of an American law firm, Reid Collins & Tsai LLP, as the source of the tranche. The legal company’s website mentions nothing about any cases related to the former Ukrainian prime minister.

This is how coronavirus can affect your skin, from COVID toes to rashes and hair loss

    The COVID-2019 Thread-12583066-16x9-xlarge-jpg
While the respiratory symptoms of coronavirus have been well publicised, there are other lesser known effects.(AAP)

Here are some of these symptoms, from the most common to the least:

    1. Widespread small red bumps and multiple flat red patches

These so-called maculopapular eruptions are associated with more severe disease.

    The COVID-2019 Thread-12582976-3x2-xlarge-jpg

    2. Redness of the whites of the eyes

This conjunctivitis is most common later in the disease and in more severe disease.

    3. Chilblain-like symptoms, commonly called 'COVID toes'

These can affect hands or feet, or both at the same time.

    4. Hives or urticaria

These are pink or red itchy rashes that may appear as blotches or raised red lumps (wheals).

    5. Water blisters, or vesicular eruptions

These are small fluid-filled micro-blisters that may appear early in the disease or at any time, often on the hands.

    6. 'Fishing net-like' red-blue pattern on the skin, or livedo

Sometimes with tiny bruises (purpura), it is associated with more severe disease and older age groups.

    7. Rash associated with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children or MIS-C

This "immune system overdrive" triggers an inflammation of the heart and blood vessels, resulting in blood clots and symptoms of shock.

    8. Hair loss (telogen effluvium)

Hair loss occurs in many severe illnesses, including COVID-19.
This is the body shutting down unnecessary activity in times of stress.
Provided people's iron levels are normal, the hair will recover in time.

What could be causing these symptoms?

Some of the COVID-19 rashes are not caused by the virus itself, but by the body's immune response to the virus.
For instance, research suggests some may be caused by over-activation of a part of the immune system known as the "complement" response.

More staff, extra teaching space and greater clarity on what to do if there is a spike in cases is needed for schools to reopen safely, the UK's largest teaching union has said.
The National Education Union (NEU) accused the government of letting down pupils, teachers and parents by failing to have a "plan B" if infections rise.
The UK's four chief medical officers have insisted it is safe to return.
The education secretary said ministers were doing "everything we can" to help.
Millions of pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are due to return to school in the coming days and weeks. In Scotland, schools have already reopened.
Writing in the Sunday Times, Gavin Williamson said he wanted to reassure every parent and pupil that schools were "ready for them", and the autumn return to schools was "more important than ever" this year.
Meanwhile, a further six deaths have been announced in the UK, bringing the total number of people to have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus to 41,429.
On Saturday, the UK's chief medical adviser warned that children were more likely to be harmed by not returning to the classroom in September than if they catch coronavirus.

Prof Chris Whitty said "the chances of children dying from Covid-19 are incredibly small" - but missing lessons "damages children in the long run".
Kevin Courtney, joint general secretary of the NEU, which represents more than 450,000 members, said the union agreed about the benefits of pupils returning to full-time education, but ministers needed to provide more information on what to do in the event of an outbreak.
"Government advice needs to cover the possible self-isolation of bubbles and, in extremis, moving to rotas or to more limited opening. It needs to cover advice to heads about the protections needed for staff in high-risk categories if infection rates rise."

Media captionProf Chris Whitty: "The chances of children dying from Covid are incredibly small"Extra staff should be employed and additional teaching space provided so education can continue "in a Covid-secure manner" if infections rise, Mr Courtney said.
He added: "This should include employment of student teachers who have finished their courses and not yet found jobs, as well as mobilisation of supply staff."

In a joint statement, the nations' four chief medical officers said: "The current global pandemic means that there are no risk-free options, but it is important that parents and teachers understand the balance of risks to achieve the best course of action for their children."
The statement said evidence suggested schools were "probably not a common route of transmission".
The NASUWT teachers' union said the "critical importance" of social distancing and hygiene had been reinforced by the chief medical officers' statement.
Of the more than one million children who attended pre-school and primary schools in England in June, 70 children and 128 staff were infected in outbreaks of the virus, according to a Public Health England study published on Sunday.

It is expected that pupils in Northern Ireland going into years seven, 12 and 14 will return to school full-time on Monday, with the rest going back from 31 August. In England and Wales, pupils will return to school from 1 September.
Paul Jackson, headteacher at Manorfield Primary School, Tower Hamlets, east London, told the BBC that it would have been useful to have clearer guidance from the government for school leaders and additional funding to help to pay for extra cleaning and other resources.
"The guidance is issued for all schools. So whether you are a very small school, with maybe just 70 pupils or whether you are a large school like us with 750 pupils, the guidance issued is exactly the same," he said.
Mr Jackson said it was "almost inevitable" that there would be a rise in cases when schools reopened, but it was important that children return to the classroom.
Prof Whitty, who is also England's chief medical officer, said "many more [children] were likely to be harmed by not going than harmed by going" to school.
According to the Office for National Statistics' latest data on ages, there were 10 deaths recorded as "due to Covid-19" among those aged 19 and under in England and Wales between March and June - and 46,725 deaths among those aged 20 and over.
A Department for Education spokesperson said: "We welcome the report from Public Health England, which makes clear that coronavirus infections in schools are extremely rare, as part of the growing evidence base which indicates schools do not appear to be a primary driver of infections in the community."

Trump authorizes plasma treatment amid attacks on FDA

It boggles the mind. This whole administration is nuts, deep state, qanon, WTF.

Coronavirus: Trump authorizes plasma treatment amid attacks on FDA

After expressing frustration at the slow pace of approval for coronavirus treatments, and causing controversy by publicly linking the Food and Drug Administration to the “deep state” conspiracy theory, Donald Trump on Sunday announced the emergency authorization of convalescent plasma, a method which has been used to treat flu and measles, for Covid-19 patients.

Covid-19 has killed more than 175,000, cratered the economy and upended the president’s hopes of re-election. The White House has sunk vast resources into an expedited process to develop a vaccine, known as Operation Warp Speed, which aides hope will produce an “October surprise” before the presidential election on 3 November.

Making the announcement at a press conference, and with FDA commissioner Stephen Hahn standing with him, Trump added to days of White House officials suggesting politically motivated delays in approving a vaccine and therapeutics.

“This is what I’ve been looking to do for a long time,” Trump told reporters on Sunday at the White House. “I’m pleased to make a truly historic announcement in our battle against the China virus that will save countless lives.”

Critics say that name for the virus, based on where it originated, is racist. Furthermore, though more than 64,000 Covid-19 patients in the US have already been given convalescent plasma, a go-to tactic for new diseases, there is no solid evidence that it fights the virus.

On Saturday, Trump tweeted: “The deep state, or whoever, over at the FDA is making it very difficult for drug companies to get people in order to test the vaccines and therapeutics. Obviously, they are hoping to delay the answer until after 3 November. Must focus on speed, and saving lives!”

The “deep state” conspiracy theory holds that a permanent government of bureaucrats exists to thwart the president’s agenda. Former Trump campaign manager and White House adviser Steve Bannon, an enthusiastic propagator of the theory, has also said it is “for nut cases” and “none of this is true”.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Trump’s tweet “scary” and “beyond the pale”.

The news site Axios, meanwhile, reported that trade adviser Peter Navarro was a driving force behind claims about the “deep state” and Covid treatments. Citing two sources in a meeting last Monday, Axios said Navarro aggressively confronted FDA officials, saying: “You are all deep state and you need to get on Trump Time.”

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows took the battle to the Sunday talk shows, telling ABC’s This Week: “We’ve looked at a number of people that are not being as diligent as they should be in terms of getting to the bottom of it. This president is about cutting red tape. He had to make sure that they felt the heat. If they don’t see the light, they need to feel the heat because the American people are suffering.”

Former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb defended his old employer.

“I firmly reject the idea they would slow-walk anything or accelerate anything based on any political consideration or any consideration other than what is best for the public health and a real sense of mission to patients,” he told CBS’s Face the Nation.

At the White House, in answer to a reporter from the fringe, far-right One America News, Trump doubled down.

“We broke the logjam over the last week,” he said, “to be honest I think that there are people in the FDA [who] can see things being held up and wouldn’t mind so much.”

Shortly after being challenged on his claims about plasma treatment compared to caution from officials including FDA commissioner Hahn, Trump ended the briefing.

There is little data on how effective plasma is or whether it must be administered fairly early in an illness, Dr William Schaffner, an infectious diseases expert at Vanderbilt University, told the Associated Press.

Hundreds of drugs are being developed, he added, and Trump “has made all kinds of therapeutic suggestions” that are not supported by science and are even dangerous.

Those statements from the president include claims about the possible value of treating patients with ultraviolet light and bleach. Trump reportedly recently became enthusiastic about oleandrin, a plant extract derived from a toxic shrub which scientists warned against.

The president is perhaps best known for his ardent embrace of the anti-malaria drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine. In March the FDA granted emergency authorization for distribution of the drugs. In June the agency revoked it, in light of growing evidence they don’t work and could cause serious side effects. The FDA also warned doctors against prescribing the drugs in combination with remdesivir, a drug that was shown to help patients with Covid-19.

Amongst all the depressing news regarding Covid-19, there be some positive news for UK pensioners. After all every little helps.
This was reported back in June but I haven't seen anything on the board. It was also being discussed in the UK press again this weekend.

The UK pension is subject to the so called 'triple lock' whih is a manifesto pledge of this government, a government which in part has relied on older voters to 'get Brexit done' and also for its current majority.

The triple lock means that pension will rise each year in line with the inflation rate, average wages increase or 2.5% whichever is the higher. This year pensions rose by 3.9% as last years average wage increase was the highest of the 3. 2020 has seen average wages decrease but as per the government pledge pensions will rise by 2.5%. However next year some analysts believe that average wages could increase by as much as 18%.

    What will the government do?

Scientists have doubts about Trump-touted plasma treatment

Scientists and public health officials said they are skeptical that convalescent plasma, hailed by President Donald Trump as a “breakthrough,” is an effective treatment for patients hospitalized with Covid-19.

The Food and Drug Administration said Sunday it granted an emergency use authorization, allowing health-care providers in the U.S. to use the plasma to treat patients hospitalized with Covid-19.
The agency said it was reasonable to believe the treatment may be effective in treating Covid-19 patients, and the known and potential benefits outweigh the known and potential risks.

However, scientists and health officials say more data from randomized controlled trials, which are considered the “gold standard” in science, is still needed to know whether it is safe and effective.
Results of a study by the Mayo Clinic that the FDA cited in its authorization suggested the plasma may reduce mortality in some hospitalized patients.

The study had no placebo group to compare the results, making it hard to determine whether the treatment actually worked.

“The EUA was granted without a published peer review study and rolled out with political fanfare,” said Lawrence Gostin, a professor and faculty director of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University. —Berkeley Lovelace Jr.

First reinfection is documented in Hong Kong, researchers say

Hong Kong researchers reported what appears to be the first confirmed case of coronavirus reinfection, health news publication STAT reported.

A 33-year-old man who was initially infected with Covid-19 in late March seemed to contract the virus again four and a half months later while traveling in Europe, according to the report.
The case raises questions about how effective a vaccine might be in protecting against the virus over the long-term.
Other scientists cautioned, however, that the extent to which the case pointed to broader concerns about reinfection was uncertain.

“There’s been more than 24 million cases reported to date,” Maria Van Kerkhove, a coronavirus expert at the World Health Organization, said at a briefing, when asked about the Hong Kong paper.

Yes it was the story behind your headline which I saw on the guardian this weekend which prompted my post.
However the BBC were discussing the issue back in June which was what prompted my comment that I hadn't previously read anyhting about here on Teakdoor.

It should prove somewhat embarrasing for the government and perhaps be good news for pensioners

I presume the OAP cull figures will be scrutinised and included in the tally when the edict is published. Will a second wave be tolerated to cull a further number of OAPs on an annual basis going forward?

One hopes any increase will cover the new edict that demands OAPs paying for a regime "licence" to watch TV.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Following 46 cases of bleach ingestions in the North Texas Poison Center region since the start of August, experts are again warning people that drinking the chemical won’t prevent COVID-19.
The organization pointed to “misleading and inaccurate information circulating online about how to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” for an uptick in poisonings.
