In his press conference yesterday, President Trump — in addition to finally acknowledging, after almost 4 million coronavirus cases have been identified here and more than 142,000 people have died, that people should wear face masks — offered what is perhaps the understatement of the year relative to the coronavirus pandemic. The outbreak, Trump admitted, is probably going to get worse before it gets better. “Some areas of the country are doing very well, others doing less well,” he said. “It will probably, unfortunately, get worse before it gets better. I don’t like saying that, but that’s the way it is.”

It’s time, however, to acknowledge an even starker reality, now that out of every 100 Americans, more than one has had or has the novel coronavirus, according to TheStreet. In an email to the publication, Prof. Richard H. Ebright, the laboratory director at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology and a professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Rutgers University, put it like this: “A second US lockdown has become almost inevitable” to get the virus under control.

It gets worse. Ebright (who was also elected as an Infectious Diseases Society of America fellow back in 2011) said he thinks this will result in new lockdowns in most and maybe even all US states in the second half of this year, “possibly as early as August to September 2020.” Moreover, those lockdowns will almost surely be “tighter and longer” than the first wave of lockdowns across the country.

If he’s right, there’s no way to sugarcoat it. This is exceedingly terrible news, on at least two fronts. No one needs to be reminded of the cascade of pain that followed the first lockdowns. Scores of businesses went under, for example, after being unable to pay the costs of keeping their doors open when customer demand suddenly evaporated. And there’s a direct line you can draw from the financial catastrophe of those lockdowns to the
new stimulus bill that congressional leaders started working on this week.

New lockdowns, meanwhile, would also serve as a bright, blinking red indicator light for all to see that
the US has failed spectacularly at confronting the worst national crisis in generations. Moreover, everything that got us to this point, including the initial wave of lockdowns, has generated such exasperation and even a bit of fatalism among vast swaths of the population that aren’t taking the virus seriously enough, that who knows what the response to a new lockdown would be.

For his part, Ebright says there will be one thing that’s “essential” to breaking the cycle of locking down and reopening —
the arrival of a vaccine. At least one of which should be arriving on the scene later this year or in early 2021.

I just spent 2 days in a Bangkok court with everyone wearing masks and social distancing.

It is difficult enough with the Thai language but with the masks it is fvcking impossible.

FDA expands hand sanitizer recall to at least 75 brands across the U.S.

The Food and Drug Administration has expanded the list of hand sanitizers — some sold at Walmart, Costco and other national chains — being recalled to at least 75 recently, saying toxic levels of wood alcohol in them can cause injury or death.

The FDA said that there has been an increase in hand sanitizers that are labeled to contain ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, but have tested positive for methanol, or wood alcohol.

If methanol is absorbed through the skin, it can cause blindness and hospitalizations, or death if ingested.

COVID-19 vaccines expected next year at about 620 baht per dose

The first anti-COVID-19 vaccines are expected to be available for use in humans next year, at an estimated cost of 620 baht per dose, said Dr. Siriroek Songsivilai, secretary-general of the National Vaccines Committee of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovations, today (Saturday).

He said that the estimated price is based on the 100 million doses, worth about two billion US dollars, ordered by the US government from the US’s Pfizer Inc. and Germany’s BioNTech SE, which jointly developed the vaccines.

He disclosed that there was good news last week, about the satisfactory results of vaccine trials on humans in the first and second stages, especially about the candidate vaccines developed by Oxford University, in cooperation with AstraZeneca PLC, based in Cambridge, UK, and the Chinese vaccines.

Unity in the volunteers with few serious side effects, adding that the vaccines developed by US-based Moderna Inc. are also showing promise, adding that, before widespread use in humans, the candidates must pass third stage trials, which will involve a large number of volunteers, followed by a study of their short and long term efficacies.

Currently, there are 30 candidate vaccines being trialed in humans and scientists are optimistic that they will have workable vaccines in the near future.

Dr. Siriroek said that Thailand is using three approaches, namely developing its own vaccine, developing vaccines through transfer of technology and the purchase of vaccines from abroad.

Evictions – the economic damage is about to raise its ugly head…

Redacted for sizing – a long read

As coronavirus relief — and eviction protections — expire, millions at risk of losing homes - AOL News

As coronavirus relief — and eviction protections — expire, millions at risk of losing homes

Yahoo News CHRISTOPHER WILSON Jul 24th 2020 5:42PM

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which kept many families afloat with supplemental unemployment insurance benefits and suspended evictions in federally supported housing, expires on July 25.

“Based on analysis of the U.S. Census Household Pulse Survey by Stout, the number of renters at risk of eviction has consistently increased for the past five weeks, and has exceeded 17 million households including over 40 million people,” said Emily Benfer, chair of the American Bar Association’s Task Force Committee on Eviction and a visiting professor at Wake Forest Law School.

“Milwaukee is a majority-minority city, it’s highly segregated and we know that the impact of the pandemic has been disproportionately on people of color, especially Black people,” said Donahoe. Milwaukee (population 592,000) has had 1,126 filings over the last four weeks versus 10 in Boston (population 694,000), which has a moratorium in place.

Tenants not covered by local or state edicts have been protected by a national moratorium on evictions from rental units that were built with federal subsidies. This represents about 12 million units, 28 percent of the total market,
per an Urban Institute analysis. Protection for renters ends on July 25, along with supplemental unemployment benefits.

Meanwhile another Republican dickhead goes down with the "hoax virus":

A virulently anti-LGBTQ Arkansas state lawmaker who has pushed for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to take away marriage rights for same-sex couples and denounced a mandate for face masks to blunt the spread of the pandemic is now in the hospital with COVID-19. Media sources note that his diagnosis follows his having attended an indoor church service where participants did not wear masks.

Jason Rapert has tweeted accusations in the past that efforts to contain COVID-19 are a matter of "liberal quacks... spreading fear" and posted stories to Facebook from conservative news sites claiming that the pandemic is a "political hoax."

    When's it going to end?

Travellers arriving in the UK from Spain must now quarantine for 14 days, under new coronavirus travel rules.

They were announced on Saturday following a spike in coronavirus cases in Spain, with more than 900 new cases of the virus reported on Friday.

Spanish officials have also warned a second wave could be imminent as major cities have seen cases surge.

Airlines including British Airways have criticised the new measures as "yet another blow" to British holidaymakers.

People currently on holiday in Spain have been advised by the Department of Transport to follow the local rules, return home as normal, and check the Foreign Office's travel advice website for further information.

The Foreign Office is advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain, however the quarantine measures apply to those returning from mainland Spain, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, such as Majorca and Ibiza. Foreign Office advice has ramifications for travel insurance.

What are the quarantine rules for Spain and its islands?
Spain drives fears of European 'second wave'
Where can I take a foreign holiday this summer?
Where can I now go on holiday in the UK?
Among those affected by the new rules is Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, who began his holiday in Spain on Saturday. He is expected to continue his trip as planned and isolate in line with guidance on his return.

Quarantine measures for UK travellers were first introduced in early June. But after pressure from the aviation and travel industries, the government and devolved administrations published lists of countries exempt from the rules.

Appears its going to get worse.

Problem drinking is exacerbating tension caused by the lockdown for more than 3.5 million British adults, research by an addiction charity has found.

A survey of 2,010 people by Alcohol Change UK found one in 14 people said their own or someone else’s drinking had made stress levels in their household worse since the shutdown began on March 23.

Extrapolating from the data, the charity estimated 3.5 million adults are now living in an environment where alcohol is leading to increased anxiety and conflict.

    8.6 million
The number of British adults drinking more since lockdown

Households with children fared the worst, with 7% of people with children under 18 reporting alcohol was adding to the tension, while 4% said alcohol was reducing stress.

But elsewhere, Alcohol Change UK also found huge numbers of people taking steps to manage their drinking more carefully during the shutdown.

Of the 1,555 people who were regular drinkers before the shutdown, 35% have reduced their intake or stopped drinking all together, compared to 21% who said they were now drinking more often.

The figures suggest 8.6 million British adults are drinking more since lockdown, while 14 million are drinking less or have stopped entirely based on an estimated UK population of 52 million adults aged 18 and over.

Around 14% of those surveyed reported taking alcohol-free days, 9% said they were keeping an eye on how much alcohol they buy.

A further 4% were seeking advice online to manage their drinking, 3% were attending remote support groups and a further 3% are receiving remote 1-1 counselling.

Taking action on alcohol harm... would hugely benefit the NHS

Dr Richard Piper, chief executive of Alcohol Change UK
But it seems the most abstemious Britons are the ones cutting back even further.

Nearly half – or 47% – of people who drank once a week or less have cut down or stopped drinking compared to 27% of people who drank two to six times a week.

Just 17% of daily drinkers are trying to cut back, while 18% of this group have further increased the amount they drink.

Dr Richard Piper, chief executive of Alcohol Change UK, said: “Successive governments have had a blind spot on alcohol harm, but the reality is that it’s the cause of 1.3 million hospital admissions and 10,000 deaths each year.

“This harm is avoidable. Taking action on alcohol harm would reduce rates of domestic violence, child neglect, costs to the criminal justice system and – perhaps most significantly at the moment – would hugely benefit the NHS.”

But he added it was encouraging to see so many people taking steps to manage their drinking.

He urged those struggling to manage their intake to visit the Alcohol Change UK coronavirus information hub for advice and support.

Thailand, masks all day everyday for 5 months. Get used to it. The new cases are imported on repatriation flights. Right into quarantine. Strong measures produce tangible results.
