Singapore researchers discover antibodies that neutralise coronavirus

The search for antibodies that can neutralise the coronavirus in a Covid-19 patient can be like looking for a needle in a haystack, but researchers in Singapore have prevailed.

They have found antibodies, a key element of the human immune system, that bind to four important sites of the coronavirus.

In binding to these sites, the antibodies prevent the virus from either hijacking a human cell, or replicating inside it.

These findings by scientists from the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) were announced at a virtual press conference yesterday.

Their discovery could pave the way for better diagnostics, to identify people who recover from the infection without symptoms, for example, or lead to improved treatment for patients.

It could also guide vaccine discovery, or validate the effectiveness of one, the researchers said.

This is fucking criminal. It's bad enough that baldy's inaction is making things worse, but this is actually hindering the response.

Just as the number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 approaches new highs in some parts of the country, hospital data in Kansas and Missouri is suddenly incomplete or missing.

The Missouri Hospital Association reports that it no longer has access to the data it uses to guide state coronavirus mitigation efforts, and Kansas officials say their hospital data may be delayed.

The Trump administration earlier this week directed hospitals to change how they report data to the federal government and how that data will be made available.

In an email, Missouri Hospital Association spokesman Dave Dillon called the move “a major disruption.”

“All evidence suggests that Missouri’s numbers are headed in the wrong direction,” Dillon said. “And, for now, we will have very limited situational awareness. That’s all very bad news.”

The absence of the data will make it harder for health and public officials, as well as the general public, to understand how the virus is spreading.

“It’s hugely problematic,” said Dr. Karen Maddox, a public health researcher at Washington University. “The only way that we know where things are going up and where things are going down and where we need to be putting resources and where we need to be planning is because of those data.”

The White House instructed hospitals to report data to the Department of Health and Human Services through a new system created by a Pennsylvania-based company, TeleTracking, instead of to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The directive came as a surprise to hospitals, according to Kansas Hospital Association spokeswoman Cindy Samuelson.

“From our perspective, these changes are big,” Samuelson said. “We only found out Tuesday, and we had to update the data by Wednesday night, so less than 48 hours.”

The Missouri Hospital Association currently does not have access to the new HHS system, according to Dillon.

He said the new system is also significantly different from the CDC system.

“The new datasets for reporting are not identical and in several cases are ill-defined,” Dillon said. “That has complicated hospitals’ efforts.”

In the wake of the announcement, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services posted a notice on its website this week that the daily and weekly updates on hospitals, including the numbers of people hospitalized and the availability of standard hospital beds, ICU beds and ventilators, would be temporarily halted

Almost a third of Iranians infected. But only 14,000 deaths?

    Pull the other one.

(Reuters) - President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that 25 million Iranians have been infected with the coronavirus and that another 35 million were at risk of acquiring it as Iran reimposed restrictions in the capital and elsewhere.

    <snip>

“Our estimate is that until now 25 million Iranians have been infected with this virus and about 14,000 have lost their dear lives,” Rouhani said in the speech. “There is the possibility that between 30 and 35 million other people will be at risk.”

^^The amazing thing is that if you sat down and planned a strategy to maximize the impact of a serious respiratory virus, you would end up with something close to the American response to covid. A distrust of masks, insufficient testing and contact tracing, brief lockdowns followed by liberal openings, cramming kids back into schools while the virus is not contained, blurring reporting of data.

    Simply amazing.

No wonder baldy likes the poorly educated.

"I am not a conspiracy theorist. I am a realist".

A group of about 30 people gathered with a megaphone outside Spokane Regional Health Officer Dr. Bob Lutz’s house Friday evening to protest his handling of the local response to the COVID-19 pandemic, promote conspiracy theories and push back on state and county mandates on mask-wearing in public.

As Colleen Palmer, 42, held a sign that said “Masking is a satanic ritual,” a man in a Trump shirt with an American flag played “Proud to Be an American” and “America the Beautiful” on a loudspeaker.

One protester took the megaphone to tell Lutz and his neighbors, “The vaccine is coming with a chip,” and that, “I am not a conspiracy theorist. I’m a realist.”

Well if you're tipping against them, that's a definite buy then.

Added: Wow, this boy really knows his stuff.

May 2017: Market watcher Sven Henrich, known widely as the “Northman Trader,” returned to CNBC’s “Futures Now” on Tuesday with two more charts that he says point to the “final wave” of the bull market.
Henrich has been calling for the end of the bull market for months, but now says that recent market trends convince him that a pullback is truly on the way.

The first of the indicators, according to the Northman Trader, is the number of “gaps” in the chart of the Nasdaq 100-tracking ETF (QQQ). In this case, “gaps” refer to a sharp move up in a price chart, often a sign of a stock being traded during premarket or after hours, and Henrich believes that their abundance even just this year points to trouble.

    <snip>

On top of that, the Nasdaq’s new highs have been driven by a handful of big-cap stocks, mostly in the tech space. While stocks like Apple, Amazon and Facebook keep hitting new peaks, Henrich makes the point that “the fact that these big-cap market stocks keep driving higher is basically masking any weakness underneath” and aren’t necessarily representative of the market’s big picture

The number of new cases of coronavirus rose by almost 260,000 in 24 hours - the largest single-day increase since the pandemic began, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday.
According to the WHO, this is the first time the number of new daily infections has surpassed a quarter of a million.

The biggest increases were in the US, Brazil, India and South Africa.

The global death toll from coronavirus also rose by 7,360 - the largest daily increase since 10 May.

The previous record rise in new confirmed cases was recorded by the WHO just one day earlier.

The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus passed 14 million on Saturday, with over 600,000 recorded deaths, according to the tally kept by US-based Johns Hopkins University.

I already have second thoughts when drinking Russian Vodka. Taking a vaccine made in U.S.S.R. is definitely not in my to-do list.

Have you and OhOh already volunteered?

I suspect generally the national health organisations. Whether they are free to publish the real numbers and history is debatable.

Whether the WHO investigatory mission will be free to announce their findings, unhindered, is equally debatable. "It's too early to tell".
