    Precautionary reminder.
It's not going away any time soon.
    And it's not political.

...and any such miraculous vaccine[s] is gonna take a least a couple years to trial and develop.

Something we're gonna have to live with.
The good news is that the attrition and ratio levels of infection-to-death are incredibly low.

CDC report finds some gargling with disinfectant to prevent COVID-19

A report published Friday by the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that many Americans are taking part in dangerous behaviors to try and prevent COVID-19 infection -- including gargling bleach solutions.

To collect information for the report, researchers surveyed 502 people ranging in age from 18 to 86 in May. Researchers found that nearly 40 percent of respondents said they engaged in high-risk behavior, such as spraying their bodies with disinfectant spray, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Other high-risk behavior included application of bleach to food like fruits and vegetables; using household cleaning and disinfectant products on hands or skin; inhaling household cleaner or disinfectant vapors; and drinking or gargling diluted bleach solutions, soapy water, and other cleaning and disinfectant solutions.

“These practices pose a risk of severe tissue damage and corrosive injury and should be strictly avoided,” the report said. “Although adverse health effects reported by respondents could not be attributed to their engaging in high-risk practices, the association between these high-risk practices and reported adverse health effects indicates a need for public messaging regarding safe and effective cleaning and disinfection practices aimed at preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission in households.”

The respondents were from across the country, with 38% from the South, 24% from the West, 21% from the Midwest, and 18% from the Northeast, according to the CDC’s report. Fifty-two percent of respondents were female. When broken down by race, 63% of respondents were non-Hispanic white, 16% were Hispanic (any race), 12% were non-Hispanic black, and 8% were multiracial or of other race/ethnicity.

The CDC recommends using disinfectants as intended, for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. It also says bleach should be used in a well-ventilated area. People should also take care to use protective equipment such as gloves when using cleaners. Bleach should never be mixed with vinegar or ammonia, and only room-temperature water should be used to dilute bleach. Doing so can cause “severe lung tissue damage.”

After lab leak theory, let’s try this? US senator teases ‘evidence’ China hindering Covid-19 vaccine creation… but doesn’t show it
    7 Jun, 2020

Invoking an unwritten blame game playbook, Rick Scott, a China hawk in the US Senate, claimed there’s proof Beijing tried to frustrate the Western search for a coronavirus vaccine – but there’s also no way you could ever see it.

Scott, a senator from Florida, made the headline-grabbing remark while speaking to BBC’s Andrew Marr this Sunday, telling him that the US and the West have to roll out their Covid-19 vaccine, no matter what Beijing is up to.

We have got to get this vaccine done. Unfortunately we have evidence that communist China is trying to sabotage us or slow it down.
Further unloading on the US’ prime opponent, Scott went as far as to claim the Chinese do not “want us ... to do it first” because they “decided to be an adversary to Americans and I think to democracy around the world.”

The BBC host then pressed his interlocutor into revealing the mystery evidence. He asked him to substantiate the claim that China is trying to stop the West’s development of the sought-after vaccine.

“Sure,” Scott replied, striking quite a serious tone, “we have evidence … what they’re trying to do is sabotage or slow down our ability to get this vaccine.”

As the conversation turned slightly inconvenient, the US senator proclaimed that “whether England does [the vaccine] first or we do it first, we are going to share.” The communists in Beijing, of course, “are not going to share.”

Just as Scott spoke, China’s Science and Technology Minister Wang Zhigang pledged that his country – first to step into the fight against Covid-19 – would make a vaccine a “global public good” when it finally arrives.

Marr had to ask for the evidence twice until he finally got an answer, but it was nowhere near his expectations.

It came through our intelligence community, I’m on armed services [committee], so these are the things that I cannot discuss … but there’s evidence that they’ve been trying to either sabotage or slow it down.
China hasn’t shown that it could be “a great partner” to the rest of the world as its government “decided they just want to dominate the rest of the world,” the American senator finished with no trace of irony.

Previously in May, Scott teamed up with other senators, unveiling a plan to protect against “stealing or sabotaging American Covid-19 vaccine research.” Among other measures, the proposal obliges the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of State, and the FBI to scrutinize all Chinese student visa holders contributing to developing an antidote to the virus.

Also that month, the Florida lawmaker said he believes the US is in “Cold War 2” with China. “Understand you have an enemy,” he bluntly told the media. “They’re an adversary."

Earlier, Beijing’s white paper on coronavirus also assured that it will carry on supplying the world with “anti-epidemic materials, pharmaceutical ingredients, daily necessities, and other supplies.”

Interesting blog post from the great Matt Ridley on possible origins of the virus.

So Where Did the Virus Come From?

New research has deepened, rather than dispelled, the mystery surrounding the origin of the coronavirus responsible for Covid-19. Bats, wildlife markets, possibly pangolins and perhaps laboratories may all have played some role, but the simple story of an animal in a market infected by a bat that then infected several human beings no longer looks credible.

A study published in early May by scientists at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Mass., and at the University of British Columbia has uncovered an unusual feature of the virusís recent development: It has evolved too slowly. The genomes of viruses sampled from cases during the SARS epidemic of 2002-2003 showed rapid evolutionary change during the early months of the epidemic, as the virus adapted to its new host, followed by much slower change later. By contrast, samples taken from recent cases of the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, have comparatively few genetic substitutions compared with an early case from December.

.... I won't copy the whole things as it is quite long.

    The rest is here

But although the gun isn't smoking, unfortunately for the chinkies the bullets have been found and they match the barrel.

New Zealand says it has no active COVID-19 cases in the country

WELLINGTON (Reuters) – New Zealand has no active cases of COVID-19 in the country for the first time since February 28, the health ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The last person who was being monitored for coronavirus has now been released from isolation as he’s been symptom-free and is regarded as recovered, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said in a statement.

New Zealand will announce later on Monday if it would remove all remaining social distancing and economic restrictions, barring border control.

A lot of fuss over the UK starting a two week quarantine for arrivals. Just to point out that countries like Germany stopped allowing anyone into the country, unless they are a German citizen or are resident, as long ago as mid-March. There is some leeway for businessmen being in country for less than 5 days, but that's about it. Even now they are removing some restrictions for Europeans, the quarantine is still in force for people arriving from further afield.

Why on earth the UK has dragged its feet for so long, and allowed countless to suffer as a result, is beyond me. They had a reasonable model of the virus propagation, they had a reasonable mitigation strategy, they said they would implement it and then didn't bother.

It does seem rather pointless to implement a lockdown but not quarantine (or, it seems in many cases, even check) passengers arriving from all over.
