    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

People also take safety precautions (including for the notoriously dangerous activity of eating sushi) and there are mandated safety measures including wearing of helmets.

Regardless, it's easy to be blase when it's other people's lives.

Oh yea, there are mandated safety measures including travel restrictions, curfews, wearing face masks and social distancing... which folks notably ignore, disregard and blatantly protest, up to and including suffering the consequences of arrest.

so, an earlier analogy using of course America as the example since it seems all TDers are so enamored to the point of hero worship of our Commander in Chief – the illustrious ginger with bad hair and flapping mouth – The Donald.

Today May 29TH from worldometer, the country of America have a population of 330,831,650. We will use 330M as our population number. Today we have 103,330 deaths attributed to Covid-19.

This leaves us with a death rate of 103,330/330M= 0.0003131212 or a death rate of 0.03%

By analogy: we have a pile of 10,000 pennies on the kitchen table and three roll off onto the floor. We want the other 9,997 pennies to stay at home, sheltering in place, living on the government dole at half pay, clipping coupons trying to make ends meet, derailing their financial plans and basically suspending their and their families lives and futures so a few other pennies don’t fall on the floor.

Now, to further complicate the issue. The majority of the pennies close to the edge of the table and at risk of falling off are the older retired population who have already lived their lives and only have a few more years of questionable quality of life at risk...

Get over it, it's a topical example and contrast because of the utter clusterfuck.

Dave - the unknown in the graph presented is that the increase in known cumulative cases is directly related to and a function or result of increased testing.

I will stick with trend analysis to monitor the effectiveness of Covid preventative efforts.

We do not have a vaccine nor a curative regime as of yet. Social distancing and sanitation measures have been implemented and are effective. As shown by trending data. As countries relax restrictions and people resume somewhat normal routines in work and play, we can measure the impact by monitoring infection/death trends.

Should the downward trend reverse, we have data to justify reinstatement of the relaxed preventative measures. Whether the people will comply is the big question.

The government on Thursday reported 11 new cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19), all quarantined returnees from overseas and five of them masseurs, raising the total to 3,065.

    There were no new deaths.

Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said one new case was a Thai woman, 32, who returned from India last Friday. She had no symptoms and was quarantined in Samut Prakan province. On Monday she tested positive for the virus and was sent to a hospital in Samut Prakan.

Six other cases were aged 27-52 years and had returned from working in Qatar. Five of them were masseurs and the other a maid. They were quarantined in Bangkok and tested positive on Tuesday. Three of them were asymptomatic and the others had sore throats, no sense of smell or taste, headaches, muscle pain and excessive phlegm.

The four other cases were male construction workers aged 39-51 who had been in the employ of a foreign company in Kuwait. They returned on Sunday, were quarantined in Bangkok and tested positive on Tuesday. They had headaches, no sense of smell, runny noses and fever.

"We can say that there are no new locally infected cases now as far as official reports are concerned. All the new cases reported daily were infected in other countries," Dr Taweesilp said.

Of the 3,065 accumulated cases, 2,945 (96%) had recovered with 14 more patients released over the previous 24 hours. Sixty-three patients remained at hospitals. The death toll remained at 57.

Since February, 128 cases, mostly Thais, were detected at quarantine facilities - or 0.47% of all quarantined people, Dr Taweesilp said.

11 new Covid-19 cases, all returnees
5 Masseurs + Qatar? Looks like they picked it up from unidentified infected clients that have been or still are spreading it to others, and probably shared it among an unknown number of other clients that would be infected and unidentified during the incubation period.

I was listening to bits of stuff in the background, not really paying attention, and thought I heard a panel of 'experts' agreeing that the worst of the virus is over in the developed world, but if swift and effective action is not taken in the 3W it would gain ground there and return with a vengeance.

Getting ready for the real widespread and far reaching pain and damage of Covid.
The Economic Damage is about to raise its ugly head…

    Redacted for size

Millions Relying on Pandemic Aid Can See Its End, and They’re Scared
The New York Times Ben Casselman 3 hrs ago

For millions of Americans left out of work by the coronavirus pandemic, government assistance has been a lifeline preventing a plunge into poverty, hunger and financial ruin.

This summer, that lifeline could snap.

The $1,200 checks sent to most households are long gone, at least for those who needed them most, with little imminent prospect for a second round. The lending program that helped millions of small businesses keep workers on the payroll will wind down if Congress does not extend it. Eviction moratoriums that are keeping people in their homes
    are expiring in many cities.

And the $600 per week in extra unemployment benefits that have allowed tens of millions of laid-off workers to pay rent and buy groceries will expire at the end of July.

The latest sign of the economic strain and the government’s role in easing it came Thursday when the Labor Department reported that millions more Americans
applied for unemployment benefits last week. More than 40 million have filed for benefits since the crisis began, and some 30 million are receiving them.

The multitrillion-dollar patchwork of federal and state programs hasn’t kept bills from piling up or prevented long lines at food banks. But it has mitigated the damage. Now the expiration of those programs represents a cliff they are hurtling toward, for individuals and for the economy.

If you extend it back to the first OWID published data point, one can see an overall "country performance" comparison.

it has been confirmed to be a sh1t show

Between March 19 and May 1, the scientists took daily samples of sewage sludge from the East Shore Water Pollution Abatement Facility in New Haven, Connecticut, which serves a population of around 200,000 people. The researchers then measured the total amount of RNA in each sample, as well as the amount of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. This showed that levels of coronavirus rose over that time, peaked, and then decreased.

When the researchers then looked at daily COVID-19 admissions to the Yale New Haven Hospital, as well as laboratory confirmed cases in the communities served by the sewage plant, they discovered a clear correlation to the viral levels that lagged by seven days. In other words, a rise of viral load in sewage showed up a week before a similar rise in new COVID-19 cases.

The way govs have scrambled to do what they think is best for their own people and to hell with others, I'd say whoever gets it first will be the most favoured, feared, and however they dish it out also the most hated.

There is a move to make all Covid vaccine patents shareable so that any country has access to manufacture and distribute the virus patent free.

Of course two countries are opposing it: One led by a bald orange turd, the other by a bumbling blond buffoon.

I'm guessing they get a fair wad of financial support from the pharmaceutical industry.

I think it's fair to say having people under fear of following government orders or a bit of "reeducation", coupled with secretly buying up the worlds PPE, leaving them with nothing with which to respond to the pandemic, surely did the chinkies some favours, if that's your point.

No it doesn't you idiot. The entire population has not been infected.

Your annual death rate is normally about 1% for a start.

Your current Covid death rate against known cases is about 5.8%.

Anything is else pure guesswork until comprehensive testing paints a clearer picture.

The 40M unemployed aren't guessing at all, their lack of a paycheck and the suspension of their medical insurance do leave them royally fucked. And they aren't guessing about it - they know it for a fact. And, they are looking at the lack of infected individuals out of the general population of 330M and are fuming over it and about it. Hence the protests.

Now, go ahead, rant all you want, and fall into an apoplectic spell of symbolic name calling. On a personal note though, best watch your blood pressure, your passion is admirable but seriously misplaced. After all, this is an anonymous internet website with all of 300 active users - so shout all you want, your protestations won't fall on deaf ears.

Now, back to the numbers - As Of Today 0.03% of Americans have died of Covid - yes, that is the figure and it is factual - it is undeniable that 0.03% of Americans have died of Covid...

And here I am fearfully sheltering in place to protect myself, in Thailand with all of 3,000 confirmed Covid cases in a population of 65M+, yup, just shaken' in my boots and looking over my shoulder...

There are still 319 million Americans who have not been tested and can not be considered to have been infected yet.

You seem to be struggling with the relevant numbers.

Thailand warned to brace for the second wave of COVID-19 infections

The Dean of the Faculty of Medical Science at Siriraj Hospital has warned Thailand to prepare for the second outbreak of COVID-19, which he said is a certainty and, when it happens, the number of fatalities is expected to increase exponentially.

Speaking on the Mahidol TV Channel today, Professor Dr. Prasit Wattanapha said that, from his monitoring of the COVID-19 situation worldwide, he is sure that Thailand will face a second wave of infections.

“If there are about 100 new infections in one day, it means the virus has already spread widely. When it spreads, the number of infections will not be doubled, but squared,” he said, adding that several countries are already experiencing second rounds of infections.

Dr. Prasit, who is one of the medical professionals advising the CCSA, said that every time a person goes outdoors, he or she is at risk of being infected or of infecting other people when visiting congested places, because physical distancing is almost impossible, adding that the only way to protect oneself, as lockdown restrictions are lifted, is to wear a face mask at all times while outdoors and to wash hands with sanitizer gel regularly.

Asked when the situation will return to normal in Thailand, the Dean said that it will take 18-24 months for a prophylactic vaccine to become available.

In March this year, Dr. Prasit predicted that COVID-19 infections in Thailand would peak at over 100,000 with hundreds of fatalities by mid-April. To date, however, about 3,000 plus cases have been recorded with a death toll of 57.
