    This info from a good friend and Doctor of, amongst other things, epidemiology;

A study published by the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre on 4 April 2020 was based on data from 210 intensive care units in the UK, mostly in London, and included 2,900 patients who had been in intensive care with covid-19. It found:

    - that the median age was 61 with the interquartile range 52 to 70; - that 27% were female and 73% male
    - that 0.3% were pregnant
    - that 4.7% had comorbidities (people with one or more additional serious illnesses)
    - that 0.7% had BMIs less than 18.5; 25.9% had BMIs between 18.5 and 25 and 73.4% had BMIs over 25
    - that of those discharged from intensive care roughly 50% lived and 50% died
    - that of those requiring a ventilator in intensive care 67.3% died.

So it looks as if we might be ok but I wouldn't be optimistic for your PM.

Health ministry advises elders on preventive measures against COVID-19

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Health Director General Panpimol Wipulakorn said today that most COVID-19 patients in Thailand are of working age, however they could carry and unknowingly transmit the virus to elderly family members at home.

She said almost half of the people who have died from coronavirus disease complications are in the 60-89 years old age group, thus it is crucial for elders to protect themselves, as well as family members who should help protect the older ones.

Senior citizens are now asked not to leave home, always wash hands before eating and after using the bathroom, refrain from touching their face, eyes, mouth, and nose, eat only well cooked meals and use a personal serving spoon when eating meals from a shared dish, keeping a physical distance from others of 1-2 meters. It is also better to opt for other non-physical communication channels such as the telephone or a messaging app to communicate with family members and other people.

During the traditional Thai New Year period, which is no longer a national holiday this year, people are discouraged from visiting family at their hometown.

"It will be better if we all stay sheltered at our current place of living and find other ways to communicate with parents during this festival. If you live far away from your hometown, perhaps you can call them, FaceTime, or send LINE messages, to reach out and express love to your family this holiday season, even when they are not is the same place as you. But if you are already with your family right now, all traditional activities such as water pouring should be avoided, as well as hugging and kissing. You can still show gratitude and respect to senior family members, but every person must keep a good distance from others," Dr Panpimol added.

The Department of Disease Control Deputy Director General Tanarak Plipat said most COVID-19 patients will start showing symptoms on the 5th day after contracting the virus. The virus, shed through the patient’s respiratory droplets, can stay on surfaces for 1-3 days, but can be killed using detergents or disinfectants.

"There are two main methods a person can contract the virus. First is through breathing in the virus directly. We have discussed that the way we can prevent his scenario is to avoid crowded areas, being away from coughing or sneezing people, and wear a face mask. The second method is when an infected person coughs, the virus will come out and stay in the environment. A frequent question is for how long will the virus stay active in the environment. It will depend on which surface the virus stays. On hard, shiny surfaces, the virus can stay active for 48-72 hours, or 2-3 days, but on perforated surfaces such as cardboard, paper, hard cardboard boxes, or clothes, the virus can only stay active for some 24 hours. We can disinfect these surfaces easily using a water and detergent mix, which is enough to kill the virus. Other chemicals such as 70% Alcohol, 0.5% Hydrogen peroxide, 0.1% Sodium hypochlorite are also effective, and these chemicals are not difficult to find," Dr Tanarak explained.

The current treatment guidelines for COVID-19 patients, say patients with mild symptoms need not receive any medication and should be left to heal by themselves. Patients with serious conditions, which account for some 15% of all COVID-19 patients, will receive antiviral drugs.

On sentiment in certain communities who don’t want those who have recovered from the disease to go back, the DDC deputy chief said today that all recovered patients within a 14-day timeframe can return to their lives in communities safely, and they will be wearing a face mask.

France is fourth country to pass 10,000 coronavirus deaths

PARIS (Reuters) – France has officially registered more than 10,000 deaths from coronavirus infections, making it the fourth country to cross that threshold after Italy, Spain and the United States.

The rate of increase in the number of fatalities also rose on Tuesday for the second consecutive day, official figures showed.

Jerome Salomon, head of the public health authority, told a news conference the pandemic was still expanding in France, which is now in the fourth week of a national lockdown to try to curb its spread.

But he said the number of serious coronavirus cases being treated in intensive care units had risen by only 0.8% in the previous 24 hours – the eighth consecutive day that this rate has decelerated.

“The need to find new (ICU) places is less urgent. But the balance of additional patients needing care remains positive, which means the pandemic is still expanding”, Salomon said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Italy, the country with the highest coronavirus death toll at 17,127, reported a fourth consecutive daily decline in the number of people in intensive care.

France closely monitors its neighbour, which introduced a national lockdown on March 9, to evaluate the efficiency of its own measures.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said the unwinding of the lockdown, which at this stage is supposed to run until April 15, would not “happen overnight”.

Authorities tightened their lockdown measures in Paris, banning outdoor sports activity between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Salomon said the number of people who have died in French hospitals after contracting the coronavirus had risen to a cumulative total of 7,091. But if partial data on deaths in nursing homes is included, the death toll from the disease is now 10,328, he said.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in hospitals is now 78,167, and the number of confirmed or possible cases in nursing homes is 30,902.

Someone asked earlier about how many foreigners had died from COVID in Thailand. This report includes that news.

New infections rebound to 111 partly due to group returning from Indonesia

A cluster infection of 42 members of a group of 76 Thais, returning from a religious event in Indonesia, has resulted in a rebound in Thailand’s daily new infections to 111, after 52 on Monday and 38 yesterday, according to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

“I was relieved yesterday that the number had dropped to 38, but I cautioned that we could not drop our guard. Today we saw the figures increase, making Satun the newest province to report infections,” said CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin at a news conference today.

The 111 new COVID-19 cases have pushed Thailand’s total infections up to 2,369. Three more fatalities, all foreigners, were also reported today, bringing the country’s death toll to 30.

One of the three fatalities was a Russian, who visited Phuket and developed symptoms as he was returning to Pattaya. His doctor advised him to stay at home, where he died on April 5th.

The second victim was a 69-year diabetic Indian businessman. He was admitted for treatment at a hospital in Bangkok and was pronounced dead yesterday.

The third victim was a 69-year old American who suffered from chronic kidney disease. He was admitted for treatment at a hospital in Buri Ram province and died yesterday.

Dr. Taweesin said that, since all three victims were foreigners, it is crucial that all overseas arrivals, including Thai nationals, be subjected to rigorous screening and observation, but he pleaded with members of the public not to treat these arrivals with suspicion.

He noted that the risk of new infections from overseas arrivals, including Thais, has spread to all regions across the country, instead of just Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phuket and Prachuap Khiri Khan as initially reported.

Looking at the latest graph of infections, he said that Phuket now ranks first with 33% in every 100,000 of the population, compared to Bangkok’s 21.7%, although Bangkok has the highest total confirmed cases at 1,223, followed by Nonthaburi province’s 141 cases and Phuket’s 140 cases.

Provinces still free from the disease are Nan, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Chainat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Trat, Ranong and Phang-nga.

Dr. Taweesin said that the Disease Control Department in Phuket has adopted pro-active mass screening in high-risk zones, such as Bang La and Krathu, adding that the Public Health Ministry has also expanded free COVID-19 testing at all border crossings for all travellers with a 37.3oC body temperature, sore throat, cough or breathing difficulty.

The virus that causes Covid-19 acts like a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” by using sugars to trick its way into the human body, according to new research.

Scientists at the University of Southampton have created a model of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes Covid-19 which reveals how it disguises itself to enter human cells undetected.
But they found that the virus is not as heavily protected as some others such as HIV.

The team, led by Professor Max Crispin, say the model will provide “crucial and encouraging” information for scientists creating a vaccine.

Prof Crispin explained that the Sars-CoV-2 virus has a large number of spikes sticking out of its surface which it uses to attach to and enter cells in the human body.

These spikes are coated in sugars, known as glycans, which disguise their viral proteins and help them evade the body’s immune system.

Prof Crispin said: “By coating themselves in sugars, viruses are like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
“But one of the key findings of our study is that despite how many sugars there are, this coronavirus is not as highly shielded as some other viruses.

“Viruses like HIV, which hang around in one host, have to evade the immune system constantly and they have a really dense coat of glycans as a shield to the immune system.

“But in the case of the coronavirus the lower shielding by sugars attached to it may reflect that it is a ‘hit and run’ virus, moving from one person to the next.

“However, the lower glycan density means there are fewer obstacles for the immune system to neutralise the virus with antibodies. So this is a very encouraging message for vaccine development.”

The research was carried out using equipment previously provided by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Collaboration for AIDS Vaccine Discovery.

Mixed messages on the 24/7 lockdown; according to Thais, this is intended to prevent people entering or leaving Pattaya, and does not apply to those living here who may move within the city, though they should remain at home and leave only with good reason (and paperwork, gel, mask).

This makes more sense, since otherwise glorious leaders would be responsible for food deliveries to feed hundreds of thousands of us, home by home.

With curfew still in effect these new measures seem to just tighten it a bit to deter people from travelling within the city more than they absolutely need to, ie for shopping and emergencies.

Would be nice if said glorious leaders learned how to communicate with the people also between elections.

Well it's timed well. I wonder if they will have roadblocks going out of Bangkok to stop the weekend warriors?

China on Monday published a timeline on how it has shared information and advanced international cooperation in the fight against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic.

Timeline of China releasing information on COVID-19 and advancing international cooperation on epidemic response

"The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic is a major public health emergency that has spread the fastest, caused the most extensive infections and been the hardest to contain since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

Under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core, China has taken the most comprehensive, the strictest and the most thorough prevention and control measures to battle the epidemic. In their tenacious fight against the coronavirus, 1.4 billion Chinese people have pulled together in tough times and paid a tremendous price and sacrificed a lot.

With the joint efforts of the whole nation, the positive trend in preventing and controlling the epidemic in China has been constantly consolidated and expanded, and the restoration of normal production and everyday life has been quickened.

The pandemic has recently been spreading rapidly across the world, posing a formidable challenge to global public health security. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 had affected more than 200 countries and regions with over 1.13 million confirmed cases by April 5,2020."

The China bullshit machine is on full power.

Anything to distract from the fact that they caused this pandemic, they covered it up and most of the spread is down to their lies.

They shouldn't be crowing about trying to fix the fucking mess THEY caused, the wankers.

All right, come on now - which one of you expected anything different?

When all is said and done each and every countries administration is going to give themselves stellar marks in handling this crisis.

Quite simple innit - claiming that if it wasn't for our quick and direct actions many, many, many more would have died. Our actions saved millions of lives.

It's not the "look we managed to fix it" that is stupid, it's the "we are saving the world" bollocks.

US mayor's social distancing crackdown leads to his wife's arrest

from the beeb, Mercans just do it better, although Scotlands CMO should've known better

An Illinois mayor directed local police to vigorously enforce the state's social distancing order, after reports of residents defying them.

"These are very serious times and I'm begging you to please stay at home," Alton mayor Brant Walker said on Friday.

Less than two days later, Alton police broke up a party at a local bar. The group was "clearly disregarding the executive order and public pleas for compliance", authorities said.

It turned out that Mayor Walker's wife was in attendance at the illicit party.

"I am embarrassed by this incident and apologise to the citizens of Alton," Walker said in a statement. "My wife is an adult capable of making her own decisions, and in this instance she showed a stunning lack of judgment".

A gloomy read, summed up by:

Realistically, SARS-CoV-2 vaccines will not be available for another 12–18 months.
They go on to say that it may be at least another couple of months after that before it can be properly deployed and start working.

Barbershop in Beijing refuses service to a foreigner

As people of Asian descent face xenophobic attacks worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic, foreigners in China are also increasingly reporting incidents of hostility and discrimination.

    Key points:
    • Some Chinese businesses have denied service to expatriates over COVID-19 concerns
    • An Australian woman was recently fired and told to leave China for breaching strict lockdown conditions
    • The UN has warned of a rise in xenophobia and hatred worldwide caused by the pandemic

A comic posted to the popular social media platform Weibo last week, entitled An Illustrated Handbook on How to Sort Foreign Garbage, depicted foreigners being thrown into waste bins and disinfected by people in hazmat suits for supposedly breaching China's strict lockdown restrictions.

Ever wonder why Trump keeps pushing hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for the virus?

    Now you know:

Mr. Trump himself has a small personal financial interest in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine.
As of last year, Mr. Trump reported that his three family trusts each had investments in a Dodge & Cox mutual fund, whose largest holding was in Sanofi.
Lot's more about his friends involvement too.
