The new requirement is in accordance with a WHO-issued advisory on the use of masks to prevent COVID-19 transmission, wherein the general public is urged to wear washable, non-medical grade fabric masks.

Achmad said fabric face masks should be washed, at the latest, after four hours of being worn by soaking them in soap water before rinsing.
“Wash your hands with soap, this is the key,” Achmad added.

No penalties for violation of the policy have been announced thus far.

However, in Jakarta, public transportation facilities such as the
MRT, TransJakarta, and the airport train are refusing passengers without face masks to board vehicles.

Separately, Wiku Adisasmito, an expert from the COVID-19 rapid response team, said that three-layered fabric masks can decrease the chances of getting infected with the coronavirus by 70 percent.

As of yesterday, the government has reportedly conducted rapid tests —
the accuracy of which have come under scrutiny — on 9,712 people across the country as the first step towards wider detection of infections. Some 2,000 more have undergone the more accurate swab test.

As of Sunday afternoon, Indonesia has confirmed 2,273 positive cases of COVID-19, which includes 198 deaths and 164 recoveries.

From what we've seen over these weeks advisories simply don't work, and although most of a population usually comply with sensible measures there will always be idiots that fulfil some need through non-compliance. In this case they 'announced' a 'requirement' to wear masks with no penalties for violation.

Much more effective and likelier to save lives, imho, which is the real name of the game and never mind hurt feeelings, is to motivate the people like those nasty totalitarian regimes do it, with incentives that actually work; ie wear a mask if you don't like jail, or don't go out you might get shot.

    Ve Vere only following orders!

Man shot dead for flouting coronavirus rules

Police in the Philippines have shot dead a man for not wearing a mask and provoking officers. President Duterte has ordered police and military to kill anyone violating quarantine or causing trouble during the pandemic.

A 63-year-old man has been shot dead by police in the Philippines after he became enraged for being told to wear a facemask, marking the first reported case of authorities shooting a civilian for breaching coronavirus restrictions.

The man was believed to have been drunk when he threatened village authorities with a scythe – a sharp blade – in the southern town of Nasipit in Agusan del Norte province, police said on Saturday.

"The suspect was cautioned by a village health worker ... for not wearing a face mask," the police report said. "But the suspect got angry, uttering provoking words and eventually attacked the personnel using a scythe."

The government ordered on Thursday all people across the archipelago nation's main islands to wear face masks when going outside during its month-long lockdown.

"Let me repeat - if you need to go out of your house, you need to wear a mask," government official Karlo Nograles said, according to the German Press Agency. Nograles added it doesn't have to be a medical mask, but any improvised covering which covers the mouth and nose.

The Philippines has over 3,000 confirmed positive cases of the coronavirus and 144 people have died so far.

President Rodrigo Duterte said on Wednesday he would order police and military to shoot dead lockdown violators. The strongman, who spearheaded the Philippines war on drugs and is famous for his openly vocal support for the extrajudicial killing of criminals and drug users, warned:

"My orders to the police and military ... if there is trouble and there's an occasion that they fight back and your lives are in danger, shoot them dead … Instead of causing trouble, I will bury you."

The Philippines' main island of Luzon has been under lockdown since March 16. Local authorities in a number of other provinces have imposed their own restrictions.

People are only permitted to leave their homes for essential trips to the supermarket or the pharmacy or if they are front-line workers.

Responding to Duterte's call, Amnesty International on Thursday called the statement "deeply alarming" and warned, "Deadly, unchecked force should never be used in an emergency such as the COVID-19 pandemic."

The leader's comments came just after media reports emerged of a number of arrests in the slums of the capital Manilla.

Residents staged a protest on Wednesday, demanding basic emergency relief goods such as food amid a month-long lockdown that has left many of them without work.

Police arrested 20 of the protesters after they refused to go back to their homes.

Nasty by-product of the current situation.

Coronavirus: Domestic abuse calls up 25% since lockdown, charity says

The National Domestic Abuse helpline has seen a 25% increase in calls and online requests for help since the lockdown, the charity Refuge says.

It received hundreds more calls last week compared to two weeks earlier, the charity which runs the helpline said.

Campaigners have warned the restrictions could heighten domestic tensions and cut off escape routes.

The charity said pressure on other services and awareness campaigns could have also led to the increase.

One woman, who fled her abuser a few days ago, told the BBC life had become intolerable since the lockdown started.

'Tara', who asked the BBC not to use her real name, said she had been suffering mental and physical abuse from her partner for six months.

When the lockdown began things became markedly worse.

To start with the abuse was subtle: "Isolating me from my family and friends… thinking I'm cheating on him when I'm with him all the time… just controlling".

Her abuser deleted her social media accounts and stopped her from seeing family.

She says he was "mentally abusive, verbally and obviously hitting me… recently it's obviously been getting worse, since the lockdown."

"It's been bad… I didn't care if I didn't wake up like from the night before... I just knew what was going to happen the next day, I just wanted the days to go past."

"As soon as he gets up, he tries to cause an argument out of nothing, and if I fire back he'll just hit me."

Tara has now fled to a refuge in Wales, and is being supported by Llamau, a charity for young people and vulnerable women.

No comfort to the victim, but there's a difference between dying due to the virus or with the virus which may have reduced immunity to an existing condition or led to other complications resulting in death.

Few days ago a 13-year old UK boy is reported to have died with the virus, though the report fails to clarify whether the virus was the cause of his death.

Same report confirms that a 12-year-old girl died 'from' the virus in Belgium.

^ the "experts" suggest the UK should peak casewise Easter Sunday, thing is it feels like it could spark right up again at the slightest relaxation of the current measures - i cannot see a scenario in which we aren't maintaining the current scheme of maneouvre for the next 4 months at least.

I'm not scientifically trained nor do I have the research capacities of CH4 so I tend to listen, watch and wait and see.

I might add that I see little to be gained by organisations such as CH4 or BBC going on a negative crusade.

A five year old is the UK's youngest victim, but he had an underlying condition.

Its also tragic that no one was there for the 13 year old and that his family, including brother who works in the hospital have to resort to crowdfunding instead of dipping in their pockets for the poor kid.

^^^That is tragic about the young boy dying of Covid-19. The whole thing makes me lose a lot of sleep.

No surprise, but many older people in Italy were getting it. The age brackets are different depending on the country and even the province/state.

^^^Several siblings were infected and thus the remainder of the household are in isolation. Quite absurdly though the funeral attendees apparently were garbed in hazmat gowns and the like for some reason or other. Just how they imagined the remaining viral load would shed from an inert decaying mass contained within a shroud is mystifying.

One is reminded of the early HIV hysteria in the 1980s.

Still, I should imagine that ridiculous and cringeworthy hyperbolic mawkish nonsense transmitted from the Queen will make everyone feel that much better. That 10 Downing St. has the effrontery to spout such hypocritical claptrap about the NHS after a decade of punitive neglect is quite nauseating but for me the high point of risibility in her address was the description of how decent and good Brits were in their fellowship when the selfish bastards were stripping supermarkets bare.

Stupidity and mean minded, self-serving materialistic greed are the hallmarks of Britain, a country now given over to xenophobic consumerism and racism as so vividly illustrated by Brexit.

Frankly, COVID couldn't have come a day sooner.

Yes, that is the scary part as I've heard talk of a second wave. They say the second wave could come when the social distancing measures are relaxed again say come fall. I'm just imagining this social distancing being so hard for people come summer as many people are used to having bbq's and get togethers. Not sure exactly when the peak will come either, it really seems a bit of an unknown.

I thought funerals could still be attended by families in the UK and some friends can get special dispensation to go to some too.

Anyone can "get" the virus and most people do if exposed to it.

It's just that it has a more severe effect upon the elderly or those with underlying conditions, although there are exceptions where fit and healthy people have been struck down.

^That's interesting, because I was reading at least in my province, the breakdown of percentages of cases based on ages.
Many Cases in the US are people between age 30-50.

    Stats in my province are
Additionally, 2.3 per cent of patients are 19 years of age or younger and 76.1 per cent of patients are between the ages of 20 and 64.
Patients who are 65 years of age or older make up 21.4 per cent of all patients infected with the virus in Ontario.

Ontario confirms 260 more cases of COVID-19, bringing provincial total to 1,966 | CTV News

^ I saw a program about the US that said the rates would be much higher in younger folk due to US obesity rate; I only saw one semi-expert say this, so I don't know if it's true. It was explained as obesity is like a 'pre-existing condition' to this virus.

Genetic disposition, the infecting viral load and, more recently as highlighted by Tax, I think, those who received the BCG TB immunisation jab are all factors which may determine the degree of infection and its duration.
