The emergence of a carrier who manifested no symptoms transmitting the virus to her colleague in Germany was confirmed in yesterday's media reports. There is mounting evidence that suggests the heat-scanning of arriving passengers is futile as a prophylactic measure limiting contagion.

In these circumstances it is surely prudent that no flights arriving from China/HK/Macao should be permitted.

As an aside, my wingman heard from one of our local taxi drivers that Chinese tourists here in Pattaya were streaming into Immigration at Jomtien to extend their visit visas rather than return to China. Just thought I should mention it for the benefit of those who have to report or apply for extensions. Make sure you wear a nice, new, clean mask if you do, and maybe surgical gloves, and antiseptic cream, and maybe suck on a fishermen's friend. Fuck it, hire an agent and stay away.

Oh great, Chin tourists dropping dead in Mae Rim now.

A 32-year-old Chinese woman was found dead in mysterious circumstances in Mae Rim this morning, Jan. 29.

The woman was found by staff in a room at a resort in Ban Pang Pa Kha, Tambon Mae Ram at around 11 a.m.

The woman is said to have been visiting Chiang Mai with friends from Guangzhou in Guangdong Province. She had last been seen alive drinking with those same friends the evening before. Of concern, the friends said that she had been suffering with flu-like symptoms including fever, coughing and a runny nose.

Gotta pity the minions manning the hotel desks etc dealing with hoards of these Virus Carrying Death Vials.

Not to mention those employed in the *ahem* service industry, that have to get down n groovy with them.

I'm sure some probably pay extra for a facemask or full hazmat suit from time to time, but it probably kills the passion a bit for most people.

I think we need to get some perspective here. A few people die from this coronavirus and everyone goes crazy, literally tens of thousands die every year from the flu and it's ho hum business as usual.

Coronavirus outbreak possible in major tourist centres

The Public Health Ministry has warned of possible coronavirus outbreaks in areas with many Chinese visitors - such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket - after local transmission was confirmed in Japan.

The ministry issued the warning on Wednesday after a Japanese coach driver was reported to have been infected with the novel coronavirus while driving a Chinese tour group from Wuhan city.

The man had not been to Wuhan, where the deadly disease originated.

"An outbreak in Thailand is possible. As in Japan, it will start with local transmission on a very limited scale and later grow to the provincial level," said Dr Tanarak Plipat, deputy director-general of the Department of Disease Control.

"We are closely monitoring sensitive areas with large numbers of Chinese tourists such as Chiang Mai, Phuket and Bangkok, which are highly possible to be specific outbreak areas," he said.

    In the PI:

Cruise ship from China was not allowed to dock in Subic port. Locals, organizations and the Mayor of Olongapo city joined in the protests. Subic port is managed by Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), not by the local govt.

This is why a cruise ship from China couldn't dock in Subic

PI now has capability to test for NCoV. Previously, samples were sent to Australia for testing.

Philippines now has capability to test samples for novel coronavirus – Duque

There are 24 ppl now under observation for NCov. In my last update, it was 11. No confirmed case yet. Most of the 24 ppl are Chinese nationals, and most are in Metro Manila. PI has stopped issuing visa on arrival for Chinese citizens. It has stopped flights from Wuhan, but not from other parts of China.

DOH: 24 under investigation in Philippines for possible nCoV infection | News | GMA News Online

    Personal note:

Still lack of supply of N95 masks. There was a shortage the previous weeks due to the Taal Volcano eruption. Now it's the threat of NCov. I've ordered new N95 masks but haven't received them. It's a different ballgame from SARS. During the SARS outbreak, there were few Chinese tourists & workers in PI. Now because of Du30s closeness to Xi, there are loads.

BA have cancelled all Chinastan flights.

CORONAVIRUS: British Airways suspends all flights to China | Global News for Asian Diaspora

LONDON, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Anyone returning to Britain from the Chinese city of Wuhan will be safely isolated for 14 days to prevent the spread of coronavirus, Britain’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Wednesday.
Hancock said on Twitter the government was working hard to get British nationals back from Wuhan, epicentre of the outbreak of coronavirus, adding that anyone placed in isolation would receive all necessary medical attention. For those who have FB, look for the post of Danny Chen. He works in Australia but currently is in Shanghai, and gives a grim view of the situation there. The virus is not just in Wuhan, but also in Shanghai (2nd biggest numbers), Beijing, Guangdong (where SARS originated), etc. Danny's post was shared to me by a friend.

Watch also the latest live stream (Jan 25 or 26) of the China vlogger Serpentza. He's a South African who lived for several years in China. I found some of his former vids about China very insightful.

Katie, why aren't people freaking out about the spread and number of deaths due to the flu? People really need to calm down.

Seoul Air have cancelled Chinastan flights.

So have Lion Air (which actually improves their chances of survival I fancy).
