I suggest the globalisation wallahs set aside their ideology for long enough to rethink what they actually represent.

Imagine the consequences to a successfully globalised world with porous borders when the next new virus runs amok.

Is this year's Hajj (July-Aug) still a go?

As the final decision will be made by the Saudis, maybe those deciding on the Olympics will piggyback, otherwise one or the other will be a financial/religious/health/political disaster to the host nation.

The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that the coronavirus outbreak could cause “severe disruption” to the lives of ordinary Americans, and urged families and communities to start making preparations.

The extent of the spread of the virus in the US is uncertain, as the CDC stopped the distribution of coronavirus testing kits after they were found to be flawed. Working testing kits are now available in only a handful of states, and it is not clear when new kits will be ready.

Donald Trump told journalists in India on Tuesday that coronavirus is “very well under control in our country” and “is going to go away”.

However, the head of immunization at the CDC, Nancy Messonnier, said that disruption to everyday life may be severe as the virus spreads among local communities.

Trump is reported to have announced no need to panic because the US already has a corona vaccine; clearly his advisers didn't tell him that was for ebola.

A big jump to 41 countries, and looking how Korea has jumped from a few cases to over 1100 in less than a week lets you know what's gonna happen with the Haj, Middle Eastern/Indian/African markets, etc. This has become very big, very global within a couple of weeks - and it was always gonna happen with the characteristics of this virus. Just gotta hope the mortality rate is low.

The low rates in some countries like India are probably due to lack of detection rather than lack of the virus.

&, anybody who believes that China has had virtually no new cases in the last week is in cloud cockoo land; the Chinese have clearly decided to flat out lie in an attempt to save their economy.

Trump is reportedly furious that the stock market is plunging on coronavirus fears

President Donald Trump is reportedly furious that stocks are plunging, believing that health officials’ warnings have spooked investors, The Washington Post reported Tuesday night, citing two people familiar with the president’s thinking.

The president has reportedly cautioned aides against forecasting the impact of the virus over fears that stocks could fall further, The Washington Post said.

Can't see bodies piling up on street corners just yet, but as ever the two camps will go at it with the truth somewhere in the ever increasing middle.

Apparently, over 5,000,000 Chinese left Wuhan in the days before lockdown - I was reading that on a Korean newspaper; many Koreans wanted to ban all Chinese from entering Korea (before the outbreak here), but the government said it would be in breach of international law - wouldn't have been, I'd imagine, if the WHO had declared a pandemic...

I said about 30 pages ago that China should've been on lockdown/flights banned.

    but...

All the people who have died in Italy were elderly patients or already had serious preconditions.

That would be around half the population, highly unlikely but the shit really hit the fan in the couple of days after CNY when many millions of people were on the move having gone back to their hometowns and villages to spend CNY with the extended family. The timing was unfortunate because many people were away from their homes and either had to rush back to jobs and small businesses or stay put. Many people who normally live in places other than Wuhan would be in Wuhan and visa versa. The few days after the 25th I noticed people here and there sitting with their bags beside the road looking , forlorn, would be the best way I could describe it.Travel plans having been disrupted I imagine.

Does seem like an unlikely number, but certainly, as you say, there was huge amounts of movement at that time both within China and internationally.

I'm worried about the spread of this virus following Chitty's scoop.

I said about 30 pages ago that China should've been on lockdown/flights banned.

They tried to smother it for the first few weeks, some say two and others 6, yet even the shorter period was enough in normal traffic terms to go global.

The big joke is WHO praise for their transparency.
