    Chinky figures can't be trusted.

They are burning bodies in secret.

Chinese-language news outlet Initium interviewed people working at local cremation centres in Wuhan, who said bodies were being sent directly from hospitals without being properly identified and added to the official record.

World Stocks Tumble As Viral Pandemic Fears Return, Curve Re-Inverts

If yesterday, algos, millennial traders and generally markets acted as if the coronavirus epidemic was contained, all of that reversed overnight when global stocks and US equity futures across the world tumbled on Thursday as the death toll from the coronavirus epidemic reached 170 with nearly 8000 people now sick forcing airlines to cut flights and stores to close as the potential economic hit from the outbreak came into focus.

And after dismissing the latest escalation on Wednesday, markets perhaps finally read up on what a geometric progression means and decided to freak out on Thursday, just because, with S&P futures tumbling, and undoing all of Wednesday's gains, as tech giant giants presenting a mixed picture after the bell on Wednesday, with Facebook’s results underwhelming even as Microsoft and Tesla beat expectations.

    The COVID-2019 Thread-sm-jpg

Or perhaps someone in the market finally learned to do math, and it is ugly: Chinese factories have announced extended holidays, global airlines cut flights and Sweden’s Ikea said it would shut all stores in China. One Chinese government economist said the crisis could cut first quarter growth in the world’s second largest economy to 5% or lower, with the crisis hitting sectors from mining to luxury goods. Investment banks also started to put figures on what the damage could be. Citi has said it expects China’s 2020 growth to slow to 5.5%, after previously predicting it to be 5.8%, with the sharpest slowdown this quarter.

“The economic impact will be determined by the extent to which it spreads,” said Michael Bell, global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, adding that hard evidence of a hit to economic data was needed before the impact of the virus could be judged."

All the figures released up to date are gross numbers, which nobody has broken down into citizens of any country, genetic groups, sex, age etc. Although I did read an article suggesting more older people die, % wise, compared to children.

U.S. declares coronavirus public health emergency after imposing quarantines

    Snippets:

"The Trump administration, while insisting the risk to Americans from coronavirus is low, nevertheless declared a public health emergency on Friday and announced the extraordinary step of barring entry to the United States of foreign nationals who have recently visited China."

"In addition, U.S. citizens who have traveled within the past two weeks to China’s Hubei Province - epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic - will be subject to a mandatory quarantine of 14 days, the incubation period of the virus, officials said."

"Americans who visited other parts of mainland China will undergo special health screening upon their return, followed by up to 14 days of “monitored self-quarantine,” under the temporary restrictions."

The latest U.S. patient was identified only as a man in Santa Clara County, south of San Francisco, who became ill after traveling to China and has “self-isolated” at home, Sara Cody, director of public health for the county, told reporters.

She said the CDC was seeking to determine whether the man was infectious while flying home."

"The ban on U.S. entry of foreign nationals who have traveled to China during the past 14 days would exempt immediate family of U.S. citizens and permanent U.S. residents, Azar said. It was not immediately clear how long the ban would be in effect."

Pilots, flight attendants demand flights to China stop as virus fear mounts worldwide

    Snippets:

"Pilots and flight attendants are demanding airlines stop flights to China as health officials declare a global emergency over the rapidly spreading coronavirus, with American Airlines’ pilots filing a lawsuit seeking an immediate halt."

"The Allied Pilots Association (APA), which represents American Airlines pilots, cited “serious, and in many ways still unknown, health threats posed by the coronavirus” in a lawsuit filed in Texas, where the airline is based.
American said it was taking precautions against the virus but had no immediate comment on the lawsuit. On Wednesday, it announced flight cancellations from Los Angeles to Beijing and Shanghai, but is continuing flights from Dallas. "

    Germany confirms seventh coronavirus case

"Germany on Friday confirmed a seventh case of coronavirus, identifying the victim as a man who works at a company in Bavaria where five other workers had earlier tested positive. Earlier on Friday, authorities identified the sixth victim as the child of a male employee at the same company, car parts supplier Webasto.

“Thus, there are currently a total of seven known coronavirus cases in Bavaria,” the Bavarian Health Ministry said in a statement.

Details would be announced on Saturday, the statement said.
Originating in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the flu-like virus first identified earlier in January has resulted in 213 deaths in China. More than 9,800 people have been infected in China and more than 130 cases reported in at least 25 other countries and regions.

Webasto [WEBA.UL] said earlier on Friday that two more of its employees have tested positive for the coronavirus.
Webasto began disclosing the illnesses of the other workers this week in what was one of the first cases of person-to-person transmission outside China.
One of the newly-diagnosed employees was German and in Germany, while the other is Chinese and in Shanghai. Both were being treated in hospital, Webasto said.

All seven, five Germans and two Chinese, had taken part in various long meetings at Webasto headquarters in Stockdorf, Bavaria, the firm said. The Bavarian ministry later said the number of cases in Germany had risen to seven - including the child.
“A round of testing for employees took place there on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,” the ministry said of the company. “Of 128 results now available, 127 were negative.”

On Monday, the company first announced that a Chinese employee from Shanghai had tested positive for the virus upon return to China following a visit to company headquarters. Other illnesses in Germany were disclosed during the course of the week.
Webasto’s headquarters will remain closed through Monday.
Webasto, which has 11 locations in China, including in Wuhan has banned corporate travel to and from China."

The Guardian has stated in an article today that over 28,000 tourists from Wuhan and other infected areas visited Thailand in the past four weeks or so but allegedly the majority have now returned to China with the remainder to be airlifted by charter, as and when.
With the self imposed embargo on Chink tour groups leaving China, we can perhaps assume peak Chink threat has been reached and surpassed.

Certainly, here in Pattaya it is now self evident the China hordes have deserted the place. There are no lines of punters disgorging from tour buses crossing Beach Road for the tour boats to Koh Larn or the offshore paragliding platforms, nor are there any tour buses shuffling their way from their skanky cheapo chink hotels in Naklua etc into Pattaya Central or down Sukhumvit Rd to the bogus tourist sites between here and Bang Saray.

Pattaya's salvation delivering it from possible epidemic contamination was/is the not entirely insignificant fact most of the fuckers rarely travel independently and are shuttled everywhere by their tour buses and herded to whichever shithole is on their itinerary, lessening contact with we expats.

Bangkok, Chiangmai and Phuket are a different proposition but the next fortnight will be the reckoning.

    Trump bans travel from China.
Coronavirus: US bars foreign nationals who have recently travelled to China | World news | The Guardian

Worldwide Death toll now 250 or so, reported infected 12,000.

Here on the ground in a relatively lightly populated area of southern China things are quiet. Hardly anyone out and about and the roads are almost vacant.
Beaches and parks closed as are all entertainment venues so no movies, bars, karaoke, etc.
I think the reason the hospitals in Wuhan are packed is that as usual even in the best of times the slightest cough or sneeze is enough to send your average Chinaman running to to the doctor.
I wouldn't be going anywhere near a hospital these days unless I was at deaths door.
Absolutely brilliant out and about though. Down by the sea there's no one about, cool weather, bright sunny days, sky is a brilliant blue. Brilliant conditions for running. The birds seem to be loving it too.
It really is nice. The grass in the parks is getting some much needed rest, the beaches look so nice after a few days off.
The neighbourhood wet market has been quiet but the prices are almost double. Supply chains and distribution networks have been disrupted so supplies are running low.
Even in good times it's the situation at this time of year with so many on holidays and companies/businesses shut down for the holidays.
Some supermarket shelves are sparse, instant noodles are sold out as is flour last time I was there a couple of days ago.
People are really nervous. I was chatting to a neighbour last night and I sneezed, By the time I opened my eyes she was 10 feet away.
Someone from Wuhan moved into an apartment in the complex, brother of the owner, it had been planned before all this started but people are really not happy about it.
I can see how trouble starts.
Most people live in complexes galled 'Gardens" There are 15 buildings in ours, ranging from 7 to 20 floors with 2 gated entries. One has been closed and anyone coming or going has to be screened and if you don't live in the complex someone has to come to the gate and escort you in.
Macao and Hong Kong borders are open but there was a rumour doing the rounds a couple of days ago that Macao was barring entry to mainlanders. I doubt it.
“If we stop testing right now we’d have very few cases, if any.” Donald J Trump.

It's no wonder. They have a very lax attitude towards public hygiene. Some of those wet markets were a disgrace. They've actually made huge improvements around here the last couple of years but from the pics I saw of the Wuhan market where they they think all this started, disgraceful.

Old age is great, able to use common sense and logic rather than jumping on the "fear" wagon!
~150,000 people die everyday of various causes! so in the month of January since the virus was discovered 4,650,000 people have died, 131 of these were people that were "vulnerable" and died from the virus, let me think about that? should I be alarmed! More people probably died from drinking Corona beer that from the "Virus" not going to stress myself for a while yet

Poor hygiene pales into insignificance when one ponders the threat of keeping differing wildlife species caged together in close proximity awaiting their sale in these markets for human consumption.

That has been the threat that was revealed to the world in the SARS outbreak but because the mainland rural Chink, living in the boonies or as factory fodder in the urban environment, loves to eat shit the bastards have recklessly and stupidly persisted with this disgusting practice with the result the whole world is threatened by the bastards.

The whole of fucking China should be quarantined until they undertake to ban all these markets. Period.

@nev - thanks for that. Made me laugh. Especially the part: And in the latest news I saw.. Ten thousand people maybe more...

Yes there is fear here, but life goes on. I'm now in my hometown, visiting my mom and restocking her supplies. It's good to know that there's no panic buying yet, both in the wet market and supermarket. But they're limiting the sale of surgical face masks in a pharmacy I visited, only 9 pcs per person (3 packs maximum, 3 pcs in a pack). The virus hasn't reached my hometown yet. Being a bit far from Manila (and the Chinese workers there) has its advantages. I am a bit worried for my mom since she's old & lives alone. I've tried to explain the situation to her, and for her to wash hands/disinfect always, bought her lots of fruits and also gave her face masks. The face masks won't really help if the virus is there, but she has a slight cough and I advised her to mask up when in public.

But, it's different in my work town, since it's nearer Manila. More fear, more awareness. Our office management issued a memo to employees yesyerday to avoid nonessential travel and the usual stuff about crowded places, hygiene & keeping healthy. Also about self quarantine if coming/flying from touristy areas like Boracay, Palawan, Cebu or Davao, etc.

Meanwhile in the news, the Dept of Health suggests a travel ban to/from the other China provinces which have high number of cases. There will be a cabinet meeting next week to discuss it. Also, 2 military sites eyed as possible quarantine sites for OFWs who will be repatriated from Wuhan.

I have a Taiwanese friend working in Manila. Chatted with him via IM. Even he wants to ban China flights bcos he doesn't want to have the virus. He works with many mainlanders and he said they're just coming back from CNY holidays now. Their management is now monitoring temps before entering their workplace. Anyone with a fever is told to go home. Shared with me the vid of the queue via IM.
