BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Groundwater Resources, plans to drill an additional 704 artesian wells to provide more water to supply village-based tap water schemes nationwide.


Over 1,000 households in Si Khiu district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, currently need water for consumption since the village’s pond has run dry, prompting Provincial Governor Vichian Chantharanothai to have water pumped in from Lam Takhong dam and provided to the villagers to initially address the problem.


The provincial governor followed up on the situation in the drought-hit area and ordered Si Khiu district to distribute water on a continual basis to some 1,000 village households. The authorities now plan to install water pumps to bring water from Lam Takhong dam to the village’s pond, a 16-kilometer distance, beginning tomorrow. It is expected to take 15-days for the dam water to reach the villagers. In the meantime, water is being distributed to the villagers who have been advised to use it very sparingly.


Groundwater Resources Department Director Genera, Sakda Vichiansilp said today the department had set up a center for drought relief last November, and has prepared permanent spots nationwide to distribute water for consumption around the clock. He also confirmed that an additional 704 artesian wells will be dug as a complementary measure to ensure the viability of the village-based tap water supply.

Govt clarifies well-drilling costs in drought mitigation budget

BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has allocated a budget of about 3 billion baht to assist drought affected villagers through some 2,000 projects, one of which is the construction of groundwater wells. Misinformation has spread on the internet alleging this project alone will receive all 3 billion baht in the budget, making the cost of one groundwater well about 6 million baht. The government has refuted this allegation, explaining each well will only cost around 1 million.


The Government Spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat has elaborated that the 3 billion baht budget has been allocated to fund several drought fighting projects, while the construction of 1,103 groundwater wells will cost 1 million baht each, not 6 million as per online rumours.


The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) Secretary General, Somkiat Prajamwong has confirmed the 1 million baht cost of each well, which is inclusive of the drilling process, necessary equipment, pumping system, water distribution system, and storage tanks. The project will undergo regular auditing to ensure transparency, as instructed by Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan.


He said however that some construction sites may require higher expenditure, as the 1 million baht figure is only an estimate for one 100-120 meter deep well, while some sites may require the well to be deeper, or require several drillings to reach groundwater.


The construction of groundwater wells is intended to create new water sources for villagers to use during water shortages. The efforts may not be beneficial in the long run should water consumption from the wells is only minimal.

I had a well drilled, price was 1000b per meter, then some extra for the pump and pipes connecting to water containers.
With these figures a 120 meters deep well shouldn't cost more than 200k.

The trouble with draining clean water out of the aquifer is that it will probably be replaced with toxic shit.

Perhaps your well was drilled not more than 9 m deep. So it was my bore well, not really by drilling but by hand-hammering drive, the piston pump at the top.

The deeper drilling needs a different drilling equipment with different rates, different pumps, also different pipes in order to insert the pump - submersible.

I paid 25000B + alot of beer for a 65 meter well( Pump and installation incl.)

They wanted to renegotiate when they saw the colour of my skin

I live next to the Lao land border, mountains and jungle, water table a few meters under ground, we have a well, takes a long time for ground water to seep through.
Lived in NZ for a time. went down a mine or 2, water dripping from the roof fell when Jesus Christ was a kid, 10 km from me wells are going dry. Don't think bore hole will fix the problem long term.

I suspect their bores will be much bigger and will include a pretty big header tank and pump.

The problem is as mentioned draining the aquifers just means those with serviceable wells end up having to get them re-drilled deeper and so it goes on.good old California is a prime example and Thailand should not be following it.

My well is 90 meters deep, yes they used the piston thing, the pipe used were large PVC pipes (about the size of a plate), the sections going through water were pierced by multiple holes to get the water in, we have 3 sections like this we chose not to use 2 other ones less deep, as the water was muddy, ok for agriculture though but it would have put a strain on home facilities (clogging filters etc)
