Very sad for the people. It was a beautiful scenic place. Was on my list for a long term stay.

@hugh cow - yes, it's a fave place for expats bcos it's cooler all year round and is near Manila & the airport, but far enough to be "provincial" and still have amenities. The BF and I had a short staycation there last Nov. We saw lots of foreigners (alone and/or with Filipina partners). We stayed at a Cityland Condominium unit via Airbnb. It was small at ~24 sqm but good enough for us. Since it was a condo, we could cook, prepare coffee, etc. It had a balcony with a nice view of Taal lake. It was also near lots of shops, grocery store (Puregold) and there's Fora Mall wherein there are restos. Lots of food choices all around (mostly Filipino food, so beware. Lol.) There's KFC too, and a Korean place nearby. For me, Cityland Condo is better situated than the SMDC or Ayala condos. It is also near the rotunda & bus station (to/from Manila). Maybe by mid year Tagaytay will be OK. I hope to visit there again soon.

For anyone considering retirement or long term stay in PI, it's up to you. You can either be near a volcano like Taal or Mayon Volcano, or Kanlaon volcano in Negros island, where topper will relocate. It could be near the sea, but prone to typhoons and/or earthquakes, and the occasional power outs or intermittent internet in the provinces. So it's really up to you - take it or leave it.

As Filipinos, we take all these in stride and say: It's more fun in the PI!

Here's a vid of The Hungry Syrian Wanderer. I've watched many of his vids - he has a good heart and has established himself in PI. He left Syria 6 or so years ago, due to the war. He studied college/university in PI and is now a vlogger and has a milk tea/ burger business in Las Pinas city. Anyway, here's the vid, skip the parts which don't interest you.

Tagaytay city now a ghost town:

^yes, lots of ash. As seen in the Hungry Syrian's video, Tagaytay is now a ghost town. It will take time for Tagaytay and surrounding towns to rise (literally) from the ashes.

But, I remain hopeful. The last big eruption was in 1977 and it decimated the area too. But nature rebuilds itself. As of now, it's a constant struggle to those who have evacuated. The government hekps, and so do private citizens & organizations. I have colleagues/ relatives of colleagues who had to evacuate and seek shelter with other relatives or in evacuation centers. I may sometimes joke about these things, but sometimes it's just the Filipino way of coping with calamities.

^ in the days where the news is filled with crime, terrorism and social injustice these events and disasters, though awful for those involved do at least show the better side of people. Sometimes its easy to forget.

8 People Who Don’t Understand How Volcanoes Work - 8List.ph

    8. The vlogger who swam in Taal Lake before it erupted.

Who: Flying Kell, a vlogger who loves posting Pinoy-baiting content because we love the validation and we lap it all up like there’s no tomorrow.

What Happened: He released a video where he went swimming with his girlfriend in Taal Lake about a week before it started acting up. He was even interviewed about it by local TV after the fact.

Wait A Minute: Why would you even swim in Taal Lake when it’s been on Alert Level 1 since March 28 of last year? And dude. Volcano. Crater. Even with “lake” attached to those words, what part of that did you not understand? Or did you miss the fact that you were practically swimming in what amounts to diluted sulfuric acid.

TizShe has 2 brothers that both work and live in Batangas.

The elder of the 2 and his family are standing on the street after an earthquake this evening.
He said there was cracking noises in the roof during the tremor.

^IMO that vlogger shouldn't have been allowed to go near the crater lake, much less swim in it. There were other tourists (local & foreign) who had lucky escapes last Sunday, 12 January. They wanted to go near the crater but stopped, since the horses grew skittish and saw smoke coming out of the volcano. Vid of that in one of the links I posted.

I hope that when the volcano stops rumbling, they don't let people live there anymore. For tourism, I hope they don't allow tourists to go near the crater - just view from the hilltop/ viewpoint.

I didn't feel the earthquakes last night, but then I was deeply asleep as I had arrived from a hike in Rizal province. Searched online and found out there were 2 tremors last night :

Mag 4.6, 8:59 pm, Mabini, Batangas
Mag 4.0, 10:02 pm, Mabini, Batangas

At Mag 4 & 4.6, those are strong & scary enough to be felt.

@tizme - Mabini, Batangas is where Mt Gulugod Baboy is located - the one you hiked last year (or wss it in 2018?). I've also hiked it, I think 1 or 2 weeks after you did.

That's right Katie. Another time I stayed at Eagle Point Beach Resort in Mabini.

Volcanic quakes continue in Taal. Some quakes were felt by nearby towns.

Volcanic quakes continue as Taal unrest enters 4th week | Inquirer News

    ******

Note: the volcano is still at alert level 3. Residents in Volcano island and in the 7 km danger zone are still not allowed to return to their homes. The island will be a no-go zone and ppl won't be allowed to return.

We're just hoping (and praying) that Taal doesn't blow up again, amidst the ongoing coronavirus scare. Then there's a new H5N1 bird flu to deal with. OMG.... Sigh...
