Taal Volcano alert level 3 in PI

Taal Volcano in Batangas is on alert level 3 as it spewed 1 km of ash on the afternoon of Sunday, January 12.

Can somebody pls copy the article? Can't do it from phone.

    More info here
Alert Level 3 up as Taal Volcano spews kilometer-high ash column

    *******************

    Personal note:

I live around 1 hour away from Tagaytay / Taal Volcano - there's ashfall in my area. Also in surrounding towns. There was also a power fluctuation just now as I typed. Keeping fingers crossed...

    I wonder how Davis is...

Did a hike up Taal Volcano in July last year - it's in my hiking thread.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The Taal Volcano in Batangas spewed an ash column one kilometer high on Sunday afternoon, January 12, triggering the raising of its status to Alert Level 2 and then Alert Level 3.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) first raised Alert Level 2, which means increasing unrest, at 2:30 pm on Sunday.

This was due to a phreatic explosion, or a steam-driven episode that occurs when water beneath the ground or on the surface is heated by magma, lava, hot rocks, or new volcanic deposits.

This was followed by Alert Level 3 at 4 pm, which means magmatic unrest.

Phivolcs said in its 4 pm bulletin that the Taal Volcano's main crater "has escalated its eruptive activity, generating an eruption plume one kilometer high, accompanied by volcanic tremor and felt earthquakes."

"This means that there is magmatic intrusion that is likely driving the current activity," said Phivolcs.

"Ashfall is currently being showered on the southwest sector of Taal," added the agency.

Phivolcs strongly recommended that Taal Volcano Island and high-risk barangays in the towns of Agoncillo and Laurel in Batangas be evacuated, citing "possible hazards of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami."

It also noted that the entire Taal Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone, and permanent settlement is strongly not recommended.

"In addition, communities around the Taal Lake shore are advised to take precautionary measures and be vigilant of possible lakewater disturbances related to the ongoing unrest," said Phivolcs

    ^thanks toot

Flights in Manila airport have been put on hold due to the ashfall:

Taal eruption puts NAIA flights on hold | News | GMA News Online

    ************

    Note:
It's a bit exciting in a morbid sort of way. The last ashfall I saw was in 1991 - Mt Pinatubo eruption. Still hoping for the best.. (not much damage to lives & property)

Edit: as of 2021H PI time, there's more ashfall in my place. Work has been cancelled in my ofc as well as other places & nearby towns. People are advised to stay indoors.

    From Rappler dot com's YouTube:

    From GMA network:

Edit as of 2351H PI time: it's now alert level 4 and there's loads of ash outside on my balcony. There's also a slight sulfur smell.

    Update to the thread:

Taal Volcano is still on alert level 4. Flights in Manila Airport have been cancelled. Clark Airport may also be affected, depending on the wind.

'Hazardous' Taal Volcano eruption possible 'within hours to days'

    ******

    Personal note:
I went outside to buy bread. No work today - my ofc suspended work for the day. Streets, plants and vehicles parked outside were covered in ash. Ash now is different from Mt Pinatubo ash (1991). Ash now is grey, more like soot. Ash from Pinatubo was white (as a kid, I thought it was snow). I live ~1 hour away from Taal. Area is safe, just lots of ash. I'm thankful that I returned from KL last weekend and not yesterday! Else I would've been stranded in KL airport.

    Some vids:

You can see how the vehicles are covered in ash here. There was zero visibility along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) last night.

It hasn't erupted properly yet. Should be more than a few cameras to catch the event.

Taal is 60 klms south of where I live, I could smell the sulphur last night, but not today.
Not sure if i've just become accustomed to the smell or the wind is blowing a different direction.

Everyone in my office is just working from home today.

I guess Davis would have got a good covering in ash.

It will, and there'll probably be earthquakes too and don't be surprised if a super typhoon suddenly appears just for good measure. If there's one thing the Philippines does way better than anyone else, it's natural disasters.

Taal Volcano spews lava as hazardous eruption feared

MANILA, Philippines – The Taal Volcano in Batangas remained under Alert Level 4 early Monday morning, January 13, as it spewed lava fountains amid the threat of a hazardous eruption.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in a bulletin issued 8 am on Monday that the spewing of lava is called a magmatic eruption.

"This magmatic eruption is characterized by weak lava fountaining accompanied by thunder and flashes of lightning," Phivolcs said.

The magmatic eruption was recorded from 2:49 am to 4:28 am on Monday.

It came after a phreatic or steam-driven eruption "in several points" inside the Taal Volcano's main crater, which had begun at 1 pm on Sunday, January 12. An ash column 10 to 15 kilometers high was generated.

Alert Levels 2, 3, and then 4 were swiftly raised on Sunday, forcing thousands of people living in towns near the volcano to flee their homes. (READ: Military deploys trucks, disaster teams to assist Southern Tagalog residents)

Alert Level 4 means a hazardous eruption is "imminent," or may occur "within hours to days." (READ: TIMELINE: Taal Volcano eruptions since 1572)

As of 5 am on Monday, there have been a total of 75 volcanic earthquakes in the Taal area.

Phivolcs said 32 of these earthquakes were felt with intensities ranging from Intensity II to V in Tagaytay City; Cabuyao City, Laguna; and Talisay, Alitagtag, Lemery, and Bauan in Batangas.

"Such intense seismic activity probably signifies continuous magmatic intrusion beneath the Taal edifice, which may lead to further eruptive activity," Phivolcs said.

Ashfall has spread not just in Batangas but also to other parts of the Calabarzon region, as well as to Metro Manila and Central Luzon.

This triggered suspensions of classes and government work for Monday. (READ: Stores run out of face masks as Taal Volcano ash spreads to Calabarzon, Metro Manila)

Flights to and from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport were also halted beginning Sunday evening, as ash reached its runways and ramps. (READ: How to stay safe during volcanic ashfall)

"Civil aviation authorities must advise aircraft to avoid the airspace around Taal Volcano as airborne ash and ballistic fragments from the eruption column pose hazards to aircraft," Phivolcs said. – Rappler.com

Taal or Tagaytay is around 30 km from where I Iive. I messaged Davis yesterday asking how he is, he said there was no ashfall around his area last night. But, lots of ashfall in my area. I'm working from home tofay, but prior to working on comp, I swept ash from my balcony/ corridor and some of the walkway on the street. Neighbors were all a-sweeping too, using the "walis tingting" - broom that's made of coconut leaf midrib. I was able to fill a medium size black garbage bag from the ash that I've gathered.

@tizme - I think the wind direction was northeast, so the ash fell in Cavite - Laguna direction, then onward to Metro Manila.

Lots of posts of my friends on FB cleaning their cars, garages, plants, etc of ash.

And yeah, it's not yet over. I think it's just the beginning of the rumblings.

I felt a small earthquake around 9 or 10 am today. Colleagues from Batangas mentioned that they've had several minor tremors yesterday.

@headworx - you're right. According to my neighbors as we were cleaning our areas, there's a low presssure area about to enter the country.

It's indeed more fun in PI!

Seriously though, a lot of ppl from Batangas & Cavite, those near the volcano, have been displaced. We Filipinos just joke and smile about these things. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and typhoons are just part of life.

Hi Katie, thanks for the reports!!!!

Here's how good my luck is.....I'm currently scheduled to fly through Manila to Bacolod on Saturday morning. Oh, how it gave me a chuckle when I saw the airport in Manila was closed due to a volcanic eruption.

^yup. Almost everyone is praying now, with the hastag #prayfortaal

Btw it's sunny now, back to normal. It's like the calm after the storm. Yesterday afternoon there was rain, so it washed out the ash from plants, streets, etc.

@topper - flights have resumed. Perhaps your flught on Saturday will push through, after all! Is it a "goodbye TH" flight or just an ocular visit and you'll return to Bkk to finish your contract?

This vlogger (a very lucky guy, considering the circumstances) was able to swim in the crater lake 1 week before the eruption. I didn't know that one could swim there - wasn't informed of that during my hike last year.

Update to this thread: there's a vid in the link

WATCH: Tourists with kids luckily escape Taal crater as it begins to explode – ALBERTisement

Some tourists had a lucky escape last Sunday (January 12). According to past reports, the volcano has been on level 2 alert since Oct or Nov last year. Knowing that, I wonder why the local tpurism board still allowed tourists to go near the crater, whether on foot or by horses.

My second thought was for the horses & other animals (cows, pigs, dogs, chickens, etc) left on the island (first thought was for the island residents who have been evacuated).

Only 30 of 3,000 horses were rescued. Rescue was done by residents & animal rights groups

30 out of 3,000 Taal horses rescued from volcano island | ABS-CBN News

    Desolate images of animals buried:
30 out of 3,000 Taal horses rescued from volcano island | ABS-CBN News

There are thousands of ppl in evacuation centers. It's so sad to hear of their stories - lost homes & livelihood. I'll be joining a relief goods distribution on Saturday. I may or may not post pics about it, since it may contain pics of ppl I know. But I may write my thoughts after visiting them.

Btw, volcano is still alert level 4. Airports have been reopened. Still some minor earthquakes near the region. Got awakened from a tremor the other night. It's a bit scary, but you get used to it.

I've checked up on Davis - his area still has ash, and some tremors, but generally they're ok.

^thanks all. I'm safe, as well as my immediate family. Where I live, there's still a lot of dust /ash on the streets, so you have to wear a mask. I use an N95 mask as the ordinary medical mask isn't enough. Had a day off yesterday and joined a relief effort/ operation. Will show some pics in this thread later.

Aerial view of Volcano island a few days after the eruption. It looks so bleak & desolate, especially if you compare it to pre-eruption.
