Police probe shooting of ex-immigration chief’s car in Bangkok

Police have been examining CCTV footage for clues as to the identity of two men who shot at the car of former immigration chief Pol Lt-Gen Surachet Hakparn (aka Big Joke) near the Patpong red-light area in Bangkok on Monday night.

Several rounds were fired at the vehicle, which was parked in front of a Thai massage parlour in a cul-de-sac off Suriwong Road, but neither Surachet nor his driver were in the car at the time of the attack.

Pol Gen Veerachai Songmetta, the deputy national police chief responsible of the case, said Monday night that he has ordered police investigators to check images captured by surveillance cameras along the potential escape routes of the perpetrators, especially in the lane where the car was parked.

Images obtained by the police so far show two men, apparently scouting the area, wearing full-face crash helmets riding a motorcycle without a license plate, at 8.15pm, said Pol Gen Veerachai.

Two minutes later, the two returned to the car and the pillion rider fired several shots into the car and then exited from the lane a minute later, at 8.18 pm.

The deputy national police chief said police are yet to determine the motive behind the attack, adding that the car has been sent for forensic examination. He pleaded for any members of the public, who might have witnessed the shooting or seen the two perpetrators, to come forward.

The former immigration commissioner was once tipped as a frontrunner for national police chief. He made news headlines on almost a daily basis as he appeared at the scenes of high-profile crimes.

Suddenly, however, on April 9th last year, Pol Gen Chakthip issued an urgent order, via the Royal Thai Police radio communication system, transferring Surachet from the Immigration Bureau to an inactive post, at the operations centre of the Royal Thai Police, without offering an explanation for the move.

On the same day, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, in his former capacity as head of the National Council for Peace and Order, issued an executive order, under Section 44 of the interim Constitution, transferring Surachet to the Office of the Prime Minister as a civil servant with the position of a special advisor.

How lucky are we that in other countries nothing like that occurs. Some minor exceptions happens sometimes, however, mainly with better success and with TV live coverage... (that's why some from those "exceptional" countries have decided to live in Thailand - no have a president, so no shooting on him, just some minor ranks...)

That Mr Brown/Orange that was around when Sondhi was shot in the head and his car riddled with bullets and posted up the picture thread of the aftermath was online again not long ago. That was a cool thread.

The point, seemingly lost on you, is that whereas such events may occur elsewhere, here it is systemic.

Jaysus there's some pics in that that.

Fair to say somebody didn't want Big Joke dead nearly as much as someone wanted Sondhi.

Not "systemic"? After killing a President, going also for his brother? (also in a live TV coverage?) Want some more "systemic" cases?

Yes it must be a warning of big joke against exposing some people in corruption case +biometrics, smart Immo cars, maybe something else, fast track system at the airport), or alternatively a warning from the massage parlor to stop him freeloading ...
I guess if this was a serious attempt the shooters would have made sure the guy was in the car and shot above knee height.

Former immigration chief says shots fired at his car related to biometric project

Former immigration police chief, Surachet “Big Joke” Hakparn, said today he believes the shots fired at his car, parked near the Patpong area of Bangkok on Monday evening, are connected to the two billion baht procurement of a biometric system for the Immigration Bureau.

Pol Lt-Gen Surachet was invited, by the National Anti-Corruption Commission, to testify as a witness about the procurement, which had reportedly been approved by three previous commissioners of the Immigration Bureau, but which he ultimately rejected.

He met with Pol Gen Veerachai Songmetta, the deputy national police, this morning (Wednesday) to provide information about the shooting and possible motives.

A motorcyclist and pillion rider were caught by CCTV in the act of shooting at Surachet’s parked car. The gunman appears to discharge the weapon eight times into the unoccupied vehicle at about 8pm on January 6th.
After the meeting with Pol Gen Veerachai, Surachet told the media that he had decided to cancel the procurement project in the public interest.

Claiming that he has an idea of who the mastermind might be, Surachet called on the national police chief, Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda, to arrest the two perpetrators, saying that it should be easy because they were clearly recorded by the CCTV system.

He categorically dismissed as “ridiculous” speculation that he might have staged the shooting to attract public attention, saying that he has kept a low profile since he was abruptly transferred in May last year to serve as a civil servant in the Prime Minister’s Office as an advisor. He did say, however, that he wants to return to the police force.

Leaked Phone Call Reveals Top Cop Telling No.2 to ‘Stay Away’ From Big Joke shooting

BANGKOK — Investigation into a drive-by shooting that targeted a former police commander took a strange turn on Thursday after a leaked phone conversation shows the top police chief instructing his deputy to distance himself from the case.

In the audio clip, which has since been confirmed as genuine, police commissioner Chakthip Chaijinda can be heard telling his second-in-command Wirachai Songmetta not to draw public attention to the shooting. Police officials told the media they had no intention to shut down the investigation.

I'm sure there's a plausible explanation, and doesn't really matter if not; top cop gets the word from upstairs, which is quite high, so much better to follow orders and who really cares anyway.

Don't know what the problem is lu-lu ,

The Septic fukers are doing this shit every day of the week and killing untold punters in the process. It's a way of life over there and will only get worse.

Yank trash just keep on shovling trash food into their fat guts and life goes on.

This is quite rare in Lieland so no biggy eh.

Blood. There's CCTV footage online now that I don't recommend anyone should watch

As much as we take the piss out of the RTP you have to give them credit in cases like this. By now they'd know who the robber was and you'd expect them to have him in custody within the next few days.
