British MotoGP worker, 50, killed by firework after it exploded in his face

A British MotoGP worker was killed on the stroke of midnight in front of his fiance after trying to let off a firework which exploded in his face.

Gary McLaren, 50, was ringing in the New Year with friends in Pattaya, eastern Thailand, on Dec 31.

The motorcycle lover, from Corby, Nothamptonshire, who worked in IT and technology for MotoGP, was due to marry his Thai fiance Jasmine this year having recently travelled to London with her to meet his parents.

Mr McLaren tried to set off a 50cm long firework outside the Miami A Gogo bar.

After two attempts, smoke began billowing from the firework before it exploded and knocked him backwards. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after midnight.

Trying to relight a firework....probably because it cost a bomb.

Never a good idea and especially with the big ones you can buy here.

Saw the video. Sadly one of the most stupid things I have ever seen. Alcohol does impair your judgement.. Had the brains to move people away from his launch area, but then simply "blew it"

The correct way to light those fuck off big fireworks is to pay some male Thai bar worker 100 baht and get him to do it.

Sure it's tragic, but no getting away from the foolishness of peeking down the barrel of a fizzled Chink mortar.

I cannot understand why every 3 - 5 seconds a bomb explodes, what's the joy of it?

In these days (also during Songraan) I have to soothe my dogs, allowing them exceptionally inside. They suffer a lot, even if it's quite remote.

That was a Charles Darwin masterclass.

He gets the fuse properly and unmistakably going and then instead of beating a hasty retreat he bends down and decides this is good time to take a prolonged peer down the tube with his face about 1cm away from the muzzle before it goes BOOM!!

I remember one occasion when I was around 18 or 19... my dad had written his car off and it was in the local garage awaiting removal. A mate and I went down to the garage with a piece of hose pipe and a petrol can to siphon out the petrol before the car went.

I was smoking while doing this and after a while, once the petrol was flowing into the can I was holding, fag in mouth, fumes everywhere, I suddenly realised.... still makes me shudder now.

Sometimes you can just switch off. Alcohol helps of course.

Must've been 6-7 at the time, after school at my mate's council estate the two of us were doing our firework boxes while tossing penny (lsd) bangers; his dad had bought him a half dozen real serious 2d bangers so we kept them for the finale, one didn't go off, he picked it up for a closer look as I shouted warnings and retreated when it went off in his face. I legged it.

Got trashed at home when his dad later turned up to tell my parents what happened, compounded next day at school where I got the blame and six of the worst, still don't know what for since I did warn him to leave it and was also under stress not knowing the outcome, though I couldn't/didn't convey any of this to my dad or the headmaster. An early reminder carried over 60+ years that you don't need to do anything wrong to get the blame.

A week or two later he turned up at school wearing a patch and dark glasses with terrible scars all over his face, one eye damaged and the other almost lost; as I recall long term they saved his eyes and the scars healed so it turned out ok, but it was a scary experience and a wakeup call for us both.

Maybe he died later as a young adult and came back as this idiot Brit.
