A Frenchman has fallen to his death at a waterfall on the Thai island of Samui while trying to take a selfie, months after a Spanish tourist died there.


A French tourist has died while trying to take a selfie at a Thai waterfall, tourist police say.
The accident happened on Thursday afternoon on the resort island of Ko Samui in southern Thailand.

The 33-year-old man fell from Na Mueng 2 waterfall. A Spanish tourist died in the same spot several months ago, Samui tourist police officer Poowadol Wiriyanarangkul told dpa.

"There are already signs saying 'No entry' as the area is quite dangerous. Some tourists may want to get better photos, but it's quite steep and slippery there and he slipped.

"A friend that accompanied him saw the man take pictures and fall" about a height equivalent to a three-storey house, he said.

Police has already contacted relatives. Although a preliminary coroner's report has yet to be issued, police believe the tourist died from a fractured skull.

It is rather thoughtless and somewhat disappointing thy have failed to publish the "selfie" at the moment of crisis or fractions of a second before.

All adds to the drama and poignancy giving everyone a more satisfactory experience. Death is a fascinating subject and recording one's own hapless termination is a much better epitaph than a mundane tombstone inscription.

Most of these Darwin dare-devils managed to get a couple of shots off on their SD card before making their fatal swan-dive.

It would make a great art exhibition if someone could collect and display the penultimate selfie from each of the victims on location just prior to the splatter dive as a kind of hommage to the strange narcissistic and PR-obsessed human behaviour that the Instagram age has inspired.

Something in my head thinks that I will jump over. Just the other day, we were at a big waterfall. The railing wasn't that high. I wouldn't go closer than 5 feet. Death is just right there. 5 steps away.
