Widespread flooding in NE as storm Podul moves west today

Widespread flooding was reported on Saturday in several of Thailand’s northeastern provinces as Podul, which has now weakened to low pressure cell, loomed over the northeastern province of Loei at 4am and was moving slowly westward.

In its 16th announcement, issued at 4am on Saturday, the Meteorological Department reported that the low pressure cell will continue to bring rain, with isolated heavy showers, to most parts of the country.

The weatherman also warned people living along natural water ways and at the foot of mountains to brace for flash flooding.

Heavy to very heavy rain is forecast in the provinces of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Sukhothai, Uttradit, Phitsanuloke, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phetchabun, Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, central Kanchanaburi, Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, Chainat, Nakhon Sawan, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Bangkok, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Phetchaburi, Ranong, Phang-nga and Phuket.

Meanwhile, netizens reported flooding in their communities in several northeastern provinces.

A Twitter report from the Chaiyaphum public disaster mitigation unit said a bridge in Tambon Him Ngom was damaged by flooding and has become impassable.

In Tambon Na Wiang of Senangkhanikhom district of Amnat Charoen province, the approach path to a bridge caved in due to flooding, making the bridge impassable to all automobiles.

A Facebook post from Dawpasuk Burana reported that several houses in Ban Noi Non Sawang, in Ban Phai district of Khon Kaen, were badly flooded, forcing many residents to move onto the roofs of their flooded houses.

The bypass road from Roi Et to Maha Sarakham has been flooded since yesterday and rendered impassable to all vehicles.

A right and proper mess here. Have a few storm refugee kids staying at the house. Their houses pretty much destroyed by wind and flooding.

No damage to our house but my ISP server center in Roi Et city underwater so no internet til just now.

Lost a few trees and the porch ... And the dogs killed all the ducks. Quite a few roads under water as well as the school but everyone is okay, which is the main thing.

Appears that Khon Kaen is witnessing the worst, as the fallout moves northwest/west.

Good rain in Lampang area last 2 days. Not too stormy meaning no wind, just long steady tropical rain. Ground saturated. Wang river flowing. No issues or power outages where we live. Of course everything will grow at an exponential rate now....

Less rain in northern Nan province the last two days than the weekdays up to Thursday last week. We don't need the rain but was looking forward to it. Pleased to see many areas in desperate need of rain getting it although storm damage is always to be regretted.

PM orders integration for storm and flood recovery assistance

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai government has urgently provided aid and assistance to the people affected by storms and floods in many provinces around the country.

Government spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat revealed that Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered the interior ministry to work with relevant agencies, including the army, on conducting a full survey in order to assess the damage done by Storm Podul as well as organizing relief support for the victims in accordance with the national disaster prevention and mitigation plan. The initial assistance includes setting up disaster relief shelters, evacuating the people at risk, providing food and drinking water, and supplying local units with essential tools.

The government spokesperson said the prime minister has expressed his concern about the people’s well-being, adding that the central government will be fulfilling requests from local units to ensure the fast and effective operation.

The prime minister also asked the people to have confidence that the government and officials will work to the fullest. For those who require assistance, they can contact local authorities or call the 24-hour hotlines 1784 (operated by the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department) and 1460 (operated by the Irrigation Department).

    Ooowee. Y’all are getting wet!

There is a hurricane right off the coast here but nary a drop of rain this far inland. Still a drought.

Thai army sends out troops to help flood victims

The Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters’ Disaster Relief Center, Mobile Development Unit 54, Office of Regional Development 5, has dispatched vehicles and a disaster relief rapid response team to help flood affected people in Muang Roi Et district, by evacuating people and moving property to a safe place. It has also dispatched a survey team to regularly survey and prepare plans so that they are immediately able to provide assistance whatever the emergency. A rapid response team is on standby around the clock to provide assistance in all areas without waiting for requests.

The National Institute for Emergency Medicine has formed a team to closely monitor the flood situations that have occured in many provinces of the Northeast. It has ensured that its 1669 lines are ready for use at all times. People in risk areas who are in need of medical assistance can call the hotline 1669 around the clock.

People who are in an acute flood situation must strictly follow and comply with all instructions. All kinds of electrical appliances must be unplugged to prevent short circuits. People are firmly advised against staying under a tree or an electricity pole, or making a call during a thunderstorm.

The Central Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Administration, of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, has assigned its staff to closely monitor the weather conditions, rainfall volume, water levels and disaster probabilities around the clock. People who live in risk areas are asked to follow weather forecasts and strictly follow the instructions. Flood affected people who are in need of immediate assistance can call the department’s Hotline 1784 around the clock.

15 provinces still submerged after Storm Podul

BANGKOK, 3 September 2019(NNT) - The storm Podul that hit Thailand last weekend was very harsh on villagers in the northeastern region, many of whom have been hit with flash floods and landslides in 24 provinces. The disaster persists in 15 provinces, where related agencies are now working at full force to provide assistance.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has released its latest report on Tropical Storm Podul’s impact on Thailand, reporting flash floods and landslides in 64 districts of 24 provinces, affecting 3,663 households, with one fatality and one person injured. Fifteen provinces are still affected by the disaster, while the DDPM is now working with related agencies to assist affected villagers and drain away flood waters, as well as conduct surveys of damage, so as to provide compensation.

The Department of Rural Roads has reported that while 49 roads in the northeastern region were badly affected by flooding, traffic is now permitted to access 32 of the roads, with 17 remaining closed.

Elsewhere, most of another 22 highways affected by flooding in 11 provinces are now open for traffic, except three highways which remain closed - they are Highway No.2034 at 59th kilometer mark in Mukdahan where the bridge’s supports have subsided; Highway No.113 Wang Chompho - Phichit road at the 60th-62nd kilometer marks in Phichit where the road is submerged under 20-45 centimeters of flood water, and Highway No.202 at 288th-289th kilometer section in Yasothon where the road is flooded with water 40 centimeters deep.

Related agencies have placed warning signs and bypass information for road users, and proceeded with the removal of debris obstructing road traffic in some places. Responsible departments are on standby to repair roads damaged by flooding as soon as the water recedes. Road users can report flooding incidents by calling the Department of Rural Roads Hotline 1146, available 24 hours a day.

During this period, a new depression has formed and is moving close to China’s Hainan province and northern Vietnam, which will cause heavy rain in the northern and northeastern regions of Thailand on 2nd-6th September. Members of the general public are advised to follow weather advisories and instructions in case of disaster closely. Affected villagers can request assistance by calling the disaster hotline 1784, 24 hours a day.

The government has ordered all agencies to work at their full capacity to assist affected villagers round the clock. Villagers can also call the Royal Irrigation Department’s hotline 1460 for assistance, or contact their local military units which can be reached 24 hours a day.

Still light rain here. Been unable to leave village for 3 days as the road from the village to Hwy 23 is submerged in about 30cm of water.

Looks like a couple more days before we can get out. We are ok with food and water but several folks are out or near out.

Coming back from Bangkok a month ago along Hwy 24 near Nang Rong the rice fields were totally burnt to a crisp. We were actually getting enough rain here to stave off disaster. The paddies will be inundated after this soaking.

We live not far from Nang Rong just off Hwy24 and up until the last week it has been so dry that people have started replanting the paddies with cassava as the rice is dead and gone.
Now with this rain the paddies will probably flood and the cassava will rot.

Will not be a happy year for the locals who rely on growing some rice to survive the next year.

Ootai, its desperate for some farmers - got to feel for them, most just subsist and many are in hock with their land as collateral. Still rhe great PC can allways provide loans and its a great opportunity for middlemen and CP to fuk them over ..... again. One day when people start giving up on farming in droves only leeches like CP will still be sitting pretty.

Correction - most are in hock through the aggie mafia indirectly, less land collateral black mail.
Aside from the ongoing myth, a greater percentage don't use their land as loan bait.

Farming is a tough gig but here in Oz the trend is to privatise the profits and socialise the losses if at all possible though not to the extent of the US or EU.
In my local town the main street is pretty much owned by two (Italian descent) farmers. When they were making bulk coin 50 years ago the peasant logic of ‘buy land’ was enabled whilst the Anglo farmers were pissing it away on trips to the UK, flash cars, racehorses and so on.
