Police intensify the battle against teen racers

CityNews – The Royal Thai Police has prioritised its crackdown on teen racers.

On August 2nd, Pol. Gen. Chaktip Chaijinda, the Royal Thai Police commissioner, ordered all units to intensify the crackdown on juvenile motorcycle racing. The strategy is to investigate and find sources such as motorcycle garages, raid gatherings of juveniles, extend the investigation to endorsers, which include parents and Facebook page admins, and develop a data base of those who have been arrested and those at risk.

Since June 27th, 464 teen racers have been arrested nationwide with 14,827 listed on the at risk group, 8,505 motorcycle garages have been raided, and 24,751 modified motorcycle have been seized.

And what happens to the "seized" motorcycles I wonder? Returned after a suitable envelope is delivered or a phone call made from Daddy?

We had some noisy bikes where I live, after a group has been arrested for "racing" which led to a drug ring bust...When walking the dog at night I noticed that the most noisy bikes I used to see roaring are now sporting original exhausts, so much quieter now .... Kind of kill the chicken to scare the monkeys move, I hope it lasts

Police Chief announces Street Racing Suppression performance

BANGKOK, 3rd August 2019 (NNT) - The implementation of four measures to suppress street racing and boost road safety especially at crosswalks, has reduced the number of street racing complaints. It is expected that in 4-5 months from now, there will be no problem with street racers. Local police must be responsible for any area found neglected.

Royal Thai Police (RTP) Commissioner General Chakthip Chaijinda, has announced the performance of the operation to prevent and suppress street racing and the implementation of improved road safety measure especially at crosswalks. The RTP has determined four proactive and preventive measures to strictly eliminate the street racing problem. They include preventive measures, along with a measure to suppress street racing, an investigative measure and a monitoring and behavior-changing measure. He also vowed to penalize chiefs of Bangkok police stations and commissioners who are found not to have heeded his orders.

Police Lieutenant General Damrongsak Kittipraphas, RTP Assistant Commissioner General, said today the number of large street-racing groups has sharply decreased partly because the adolescents have turned to forming smaller groups and staging street racing when the street is empty, instead of closing streets. It is difficult for the police to trace and arrest them but the frequency of the street racing problem has been decreased by the shooting of video clips before arrests and prosecution.

As for road safety measures, crosswalks will be improved to suit the conditions of each area. Additional CCTVs will be installed. People will be urged to change their road use behavior and the law will be strictly enforced. The RTP also has a plan to deduct points from motorists who don’t stop their vehicles for people to cross a crosswalk. A follow-up meeting will be held every month.

People who have evidence, such as video clips and photos are asked to notify the police through channels including the Facebook page, the RTP’s Social Media Center or by calling 1599. The police will gather information to arrest and prosecute street racers in order to relieve people’s trouble.

Around here they ask for around 4,000 thb to return them. Most people don't bother paying.

In addition to the "suppression performance", authorities should set up racing events where they could also discuss safety and gather intelligence on street racers to catch them more easily if they keep illegally street racing.

"set up racing events where they could also discuss safety"

Great idea. Boys will race. Cars, motorcycles, bicycles, whatever they have. Give them somewhere to do it. Helmets mandatory etc.

When I was 16 - 18 years, thats all we did. Out of town on a highway. Had 1/4 mile lines painted.

They could also string high strength fishing line across their favourite race tracks at neck height.
That would prove a worthwhile deterrent after the first "catch".
