Thai health authorities probe Aussies’ claim of “two years in hell” after eating Pad

Thailand’s Disease Control Department is investigation a claim by an Australian couple that they went through “two years of hell” after eating a plate of Pad Thai, a popular Thai-style fried noodle, while vacationing in Thailand in 2017.

According to thethaiger.com on Monday, Stacey Barnes and Ryan Prigg from Perth, along with their two children, visited Thailand in 2017. Once back in Perth they both began to feel unwell, drained of energy and struggling even to get out of bed.

Following extensive tests, doctors found that they were hosting dientamoeba fragilis, a single celled parasite, which they say was in a Pad Thai dish they had eaten at a food court in Thailand.

Disease Control Department director-general, Dr. Suwannachai Wattanaying- charoenchai, said on Tuesday that Thailand has effective monitoring systems to ensure food safety through the Food and Drug Administration Office, the Health Department, the Medical Science Department, the Agriculture Ministry and private networks dedicated to food safety.

Commenting on dientamoeba fragilis, he explained that it is not harmful to people who are in good health and ruled out the possibility that the parasite came from the Pad Thai because it would have been fried.

Ryan, speaking on a Channel 7 TV special, vowed never to return to Thailand, saying the experience had put them through the worst two years of their lives.

Dientamoeba fragilis is a species of single-celled protozoa found in the digestive tract of some humans, pigs and gorillas. It causes gastrointestinal upset in some people, but not in others. It is a common cause of diarrhea, chronic diarrhea and fatigue.

    Hey they’re from Perth.
They’d be lucky to tell the difference between a Big Mac and a slap.

I had 11 years of chronic diarrhea and fatigue when I lived in Thailand.
I just thought that was normal.

I had a terrible case of the shits having encountered a bunch of antipodeans in the Robin Hood, Bangkok when some girlie ARF match was on the gogglebox. They're OK in small doses but in packs it's a different game entirely, you get the squitters in no time.

Went to the outlaws bog 5 minutes later and gave it the chang squirts all up the wall and over the pan, fvcking tremendous it was.
Still have fond memories of that upper bowel movement to this very day.

So obviously not Aussies you silly person. You should attempt to learn a bit of Australian vernacular, rather than make it up as you go along. "Shitter if you fancy" is not an Aussie term. An Australian Lass would never say "if you fancy", it's all about what she fancies. An Aussie chick does not give a flying fook what you fancy. They certainly don't say"shitter" which is rather crass and is more likely to come from a well... a person such as yourself to be polite. We have much more class than that. Frankly, I'm quite surprised you know any Aussie sheilas at all as they usually prefer men.
If an Australian lady is known for an occasional insertion between the buttocks, She is more likely to remark "I'll cop it up the date instead darlin". or alternately she might say, "I feel like one up the Clacker tonight babe".
I must admit I do admire the patience and perseverance of my fellow Australians who didn't at least just up and leave when you walked in. I take it the Brexit thread was closed for the night.

Years ago,I found I was afflicted with the same problem. Eventually found it was eggs in Thailand. Now I only order Kai sook sook and have never had that problem since I have taken runny yolks off the menu. Oh, apart from an occasional wickedly hot curry.

It look like, there in good shape for being sick for 2 year.
If you have the shits for 2 years would a scare crow
I know of a guy in Perth who got very sick, after 2 years of having chronic diarrhea & many visited to the hospital they could not find the problem.
One day he when to a doctor & this doctor had studied tropical diseases, he talk to the doctor his symptoms.
The Doctor check him over & told him he has a parasite that was common in Bali.
But he has never been to Bali, they work out that a friend who lives in the same house went to Bali 2 years ago.
The friend that went to Bali did not get sick, he carried the parasite.

Good free advertising for there fitness business.

Health Ministry doubts Aussie couple got parasitic infection in Thailand

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health insists that there is a very slim chance that a person could contact Dientamoeba Fragilis, a dangerous parasite, after eating a plate of Pad Thai, a popular dish of fried noodles, as claimed by an Australian couple.

Stacey Barnes and Ryan Prigg from Perth, along with their two children, visited Thailand in 2017. Upon returning to Australia, they both felt unwell, drained of energy and even struggled to get out of bed.

Doctors in Australia tried to diagnose their illness and tests eventually revealed the presence of Dientamoeba Fragilis, which the couple claim was ingested with a Pad Thai dish they had eaten at a food court in Thailand.

However, Dr. Rungruang Kitphadee, an advisor attached to the Public Health Ministry, said today that inspectors from the Disease Control Department had been sent to Phuket and neighboring provinces to investigate.

He said they did not find any trace of the parasite in food which would support the Australian couple’s claim.

Citing statistics for the past three years, he said there was not a single case of a patient contracting Dientamoeba Fragilis in Phuket, adding that it is almost impossible that the parasite came from Pad Thai because the noodles are fried.

Meanwhile, Associate Professor Ong-art Mahitthikorn, a parasite specialist at Mahidol University, said that the parasite can be found anywhere in the world, including Thailand, but it won’t be found in well-cooked food. He also ruled out the possibility that the parasite would remain in the body for two years, noting that the parasite would be discharged from the body of a healthy person.

Dientamoeba Fragilis is a species of single-cell parasite found in the gastrointestinal tracts of some humans, pigs and gorillas. It causes gastrointestinal symptoms in some people, but not in others. It is an important cause of acute and chronic diarrhea, fatigue and, in children, inhibited development.
