Thai Customs Introduces New Conveyor Belt X-Ray Machines

BANGKOK – Thailand’s Airport Customs Departments will get conveyor belt X-ray machines up and running by the end of this year, enabling it to scan all luggage in search of illegal items and brand-name items smuggled in to avoid paying taxes and to resell.

Customs Department director-general Krissada Jinawicharana said on Friday that his agency had just received and installed 23 conveyor belt X-ray machines at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport, which would be in use later this year.

The conveyor belt X-ray machines can scan all checked-in luggage and help officials detect illegal items such as narcotics or goods being smuggled in to avoid paying taxes.

Until now, luggage has been randomly opened and searched, he said.

The agency will also develop an artificial intelligence system to link conveyor belt X-ray machine images with those from their counterparts in Asean countries in a move to boost effectiveness, he added.

Luggage to be X-rayed at airports by year-end, used-car imports to be banned: Customs

If they introduce this system I am screwed!!! and the x ray of luggage will certainly raise some eyebrows and warrant further investigation.
I still and will always maintain my US home in case I ever need to return, and we also have our Thai home. By now I have every personal item I need in both my Thai and US home so when I travel , there are very few clothing or toiletries, when coming to Thailand my suitcase is full of tools, hardware, and other items I am not sure I can easily find in Thailand.
So far I never had a problem. I am in the US now and won't be back until this fall, so if this new system is implemented before then, would like to hear from those who experience it.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

This is such utter cock. There is no way they will be able to scan all arriving checked-in baggage. If that were to happen then passengers will be waiting in the baggage hall for several hours and the baggage loaders will be unable to offload the aircraft because of the bottle neck that will be created by the process. Aircraft will be marooned on piers, and in the end there will be no space left on the aprons for arriving aircraft to taxi-off the runway.
What they will do is simply select baggage either randomly or from targeted flights and scan them 'upstream' before loading onto the reclaim belt system.

Yes selective screening but it will be when you pass through customs.

It's probably scanned for explosives but not that extra carton of smokes or bottle of voddy that you've snuck in there.

Buying luxury items abroad to sell it later on is indeed a big thing, have been approached several times to source such items myself or get visiting friends to bring them.
I have a Thai friend living abroad who does this at every trip in a more business oriented way (not just bringing stuff for acquaintances but also selling to strangers with good profit)

They had already step up controls, which lead "smugglers" to unbox and untag the items so that they are considered as personal items if you have a raisonable amount.

Personal items, especially if they have obviously been used before entering Thailand shouldn't raise eyebrows, used tools ok, still boxed parts aren't as it should be subjected to tax...
