Chiang Mai locals disapproves Hinokiland cultural attraction endorsement

BANGKOK, 17 May 2019 (NNT) - After much criticism against the endorsement of Hinokiland, a tourism attraction themed after ancient Japanese village and castle in Chai Prakan district as a must-go cultural attraction due to the lack of Thai culture representation, Chiang Mai Provincial Cultural Office is now set to issue a letter to the Department of Cultural Promotion stressing the disapproval of local people.

Chiang Mai Provincial Cultural Official Sanae Saiyenjai has said regarding this issue, confirming that the office and the provincial cultural assembly did not nominate Hinokiland to the Department of Cultural Promotion for consideration as one of the 10 must-go cultural attraction, while his inquiry with the department revealed the selection was based on the popularity among tourists nationwide.

The provincial cultural office will be sending a letter addressed to the Department of Cultural Promotion director general to express the concerns of local people in Chiang Mai against the selection of Hinokiland as a must-go cultural attraction, as the place itself does not represent the Thai culture.

This does seem a somewhat bizarre selection.

Why don't they change the name to Department of Japanese Cultural Promotion FFS?

    Idiots.

Perhaps putting the word 'Thailand' in their name would help focus some minds?

Or is there a need for a 'Britland' on Doi Suthep?

A Jappo land is a bit much but this "Thai Culture" thing is nonsense. No such thing as a homogenous Thai culture. Cultures differ depending on region.

As with many things in Thailand, the gov goes out of it's way to make sure Central Thailand represents the only true Thai culture.

A place that is a copy of a foreign site, except that the serie of red gates are made of steel instead of wood in ... So this is a cheap copie that will take you 1 hour and a half to visit if you stretch it, which makes the long trip from CM city not really worth it...that seems quite representative of what Thailand has on offer nowadays

There is no issue in promoting foreign inspired attractions, unless your job is to promote local culture.
