People invited to observe Jupiter, Saturn, moon conjunction from May 20-23

BANGKOK, 17 May 2019 (NNT) - The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) is inviting people nationwide to observe the conjunction of moon and Jupiter and the conjunction of moon and Saturn with naked eyes from May 20-23, 2019.

The conjunction of moon and Jupiter will take place on May 20, 2019. It will be visible from 20.30 until dawn. On May 22-23, 2019, Saturn will appear in the sky alongside the moon from 10 p.m. until dawn. Both phenomena can be seen with naked eyes all over the country in the Southeast.

They are astronomical phenomena that occur regularly because the moon and the planets change their positions constantly according to the orbit of the sun, so the moon and planets appearing in the sky in the same direction or appearing alongside each other is considered normal.

After this, the earth will become closer to the two planets. Jupiter will be in the closest position to earth this year on June 10, 2019. Saturn will be in the closest position to earth on July 9, 2019, resulting in the two planets appearing larger and larger and they will be noticeable longer throughout the night.

I've just had a look outside. This is what I saw.

I'm guessing the big one is the Moon ...

And the small one is Jupiter...

    Very, very, very nice Nev.

Looks more like Jupiter and the 4 Galilean moons, than Saturn.

Just took a look out, but both me telescope and me binoculars are in me condo and I'm in the house. My phone can't capture anything like that.

    Hopefully tomorrow night.

    Cheers.

I think you are right, Luigi. It looks like I misread the OP news article. Oops.

    Nice photo nev.

Jupiter looks gorgeous at the moment. You can see the moons clearly with just 7x50 binoculars.

With a 130mm reflector you can see the bands of storm clouds and even some of the colours.

It got cloudy down here before Saturn popped up but I will try again tomorrow.

Here's a photo of Jupiter taken 90 minutes after the last one. You can see the different positions of the moons.

    Very nice.

btw, the closest moon is Io, the most volcanic body in the Solar System.

And then my favourite, Europa. More water than Earth, under the cracked icy shell, hydrothermal vents that probably/possibly have alien life feeding off them.

There's a bright star or planet really close to the moon right now. What is it? Is it Jupiter again? Or Saturn? Or something else?

    ^I can't see anything.

Cloudy again. Koonts. After I spent all weekend polishing my 5 incher.

Anyway it must be Jupiter as the moon was an hour ahead of Jupiter yesterday and it falls an hour behind each day so it should be right near Jupiter tonight.

Took it over and set it up out the back.

    Completely overcast.

Oh well. Might as well have a beer, or a Kit Kat, while waiting.

    Looks nice Lu.

I fancy one of them computerised motorised ones that can read the sky and set itself up automatically so you just type in the name of the object and it whirrs round to point straight at it.

If we are comparing 5 inchers behind the bike-shed here is mine.

The clouds were gone and we got a treat tonight with Jupiter and then Saturn in clear skies.

Saturn is at its most distinct angle with the rings as visible as they can be and extending to touch the top and bottom of Saturn's profile as we see it.

The sun is striking Saturn at a slight angle so the planet's shadow can be seen cast across the upper part of the ring system.

Titan is clearly visible 2 arc minutes above.

I don't have a camera attachment so I took this by holding my mobile camera up to the eyepiece.

Not great as it does not even show the rings distinct from the body but you can see the oval ring outline.

I had to take my phone out of its case (the first time I have done this since I bought it). I then dropped it and cracked the screen... I really need to get a camera attachment.

I took a similar image yesterday but I thought it was just a crap photo by me or maybe a UFO or something.
