I have to laugh at the number of naive falang who try to impose their western ideas on Thailand before falling flat on their stupid faces.
when thai values consist of arresting, shaking down for a bribe, prosecuting and processing through court, fining, locking up like whilst deportation papers are prepared and authorised, and then kicking out of the country like a dangerous criminal a tourist caught vaping by corrupt chickenhead police in a shithole resort in an uncivilised third world dictatorship, then i will take western values any time.

a quiet word by the policeman asking her to decease would have sufficed, and would be the modus operandi in any country with respect for its inhabitants and visitors.

Fine or bribe, the article doesn't specify and the difference between the two in Thailand is largely academic.

Considering the law she broke comes with a 10yr prison sentence, paying 40k at the police station seems reasonable...

According to the perpetrator she paid just shy of 300k all in and has been deported and blacklisted... ...bet she is wishing she had just paid the 40k like a Thai would have done.

Yes she broke the law, and she probably should have got a lawyer to negotiate the bribe down or, better, face the charge and make sure she got her bail money back, which is doable if you have a lawyer involved and the time to wait around.

But what is wrong here is the police demanding a Bt40,000 bribe you fucking idiot.

You honestly never read about the spate of Suwaranbhumi shoplifting shakedowns? Where people were accused of shoplifting even when there was no evidence, or given "free gifts" and then arrested when they left the shop, or having staff ring up all of their purchases except one so that it looked like they'd stolen something?

And then taken off to an airport motel to negotiate a bribe with a Sri Lankan fixer called Tony?

You really don't know Thailand at all, do you?

Some judicious googling should put you straight.

Don't be harsh on him, even in Thailand you could get done for child abuse.
