Schools Ordered Closed in Bangkok Due to Smog

    Just got the news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BANGKOK — Students will be dismissed from all public schools at noon and classes canceled through Friday as air pollution continues unabated, the governor said Wednesday.
Classes at 437 public schools were canceled out of concern the heavy smog could impact student health, according to Gov. Aswin Kwanmuang. Officials said the pollution in the capital this morning exceeded acceptable levels in 39 areas, with the highest density near Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon at up to 145 micrograms per cubic meter.
State weather forecasters said the lack of wind and higher air pressure has aggravated the situation, which is likely to persist at current unhealthy levels until next Monday at the earliest.
Aswin said the forecast led to the decision to close schools temporarily because “children might be harmed” by the pollution.
Public frustration continues to grow as officials have scrambled to address the surging pollution since last month without any concrete results. Among those efforts are spraying water into the air, washing streets and halting rail construction.
On Twitter, #UltrafineParticles was the No. 2 top-trending hashtag as of noon.
The government has come in for harsh criticism for ineffectively handling the problem.
Aswin today outlined additional measures unlikely to impress the public, including deploying 50 drones to spray water and installing more pollution detectors in public areas.
He said factory operating hours would be limited, but fell short of promising stricter law enforcement in favor of voluntary measures.
“We’ll ask for cooperation,” he said. “Everyone has to help each other.”
He also said City Hall is considering ways to designate certain areas subject to controls on traffic, construction and open-air burning.

Bangkok is a primate city to the power of ten. It is a megalopolis of over 10-12 millions providing employment in its industrial sectors for over 35% of the entire Thai manufacturing workforce, a city that dwarfs its nearest competitor, Khorat, a fraction of its size with a population of a mere 500,000. Add to this the belt of industry within 100 miles of the capital that accounts for the major proportion of Thailand's remaining manufacturing output including most if its chemical factories and refineries stretching from the city to Rayong in a continuous corridor of ribbon development. Scarcely surprising that the winter smog is worsening, particularly with the explosion in vehicle ownership.

The future is grim unless they relocate their manufacturing centres and reduce access into the city by vehicles through congestion charges. Banning street food, particularly the use of charcoal fires, and outlawing the practice of burning refuse within the metropolitan city limits is crucial. All private diesel powered vehicles should be banned from the capital and operators of commercial omnibuses and trucks older than 10 years should be shot.

The solutions are there but this is Thailand so it will be a fuckup.

Presuming that most students live near their schools.

Is the air at home going to be much cleaner?

...I'd suggest a modicum of caution, Lu:

Oh.....you're trying to apply logic! Good luck with that...

What I wondered was where they're going to get the water for the 50 drones to spray....from which unpolluted water source?????

So when the drones start spraying the water, be sure to look up and say thanks...

Don't know about most, but experienced teachers here have 12 month salaried contracts.

Aside from pollution reduction moving centers to where the work force lives makes for solving problems of poverty and discontent thoughout the country.

Decentralization of the Thai economy to the NE, North and South is the only way for several reasons but doubt we will see a rush to do so. Keeping power and money centralized benefits the powerful and monied.

A bit of smog won't deter the powers that be. Treat the sympton not the cause. Close schools, spray a bit of water and all will be right in the Kingdom.

Yeah, it's a pretty bad take on when they pushed the flood out to sea by tying tugboats to bridges 500km upstream.
