168 killed when tsunami strikes Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia — During a busy holiday weekend, a tsunami apparently caused by the eruption of an island volcano killed more than 168 people around Indonesia’s Sunda Strait, sending a wall of water crashing ashore and sweeping away people attending a beach concert along with hundreds of houses including hotels, the government and witnesses said.

More than 745 people have been reported injured since the tsunami hit at 9:27 p.m. Saturday, the Disaster Management Agency said. At least 30 others are unaccounted for.
The disaster could have been caused by undersea landslides from the eruption of Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island formed over years from the nearby Krakatau volcano, scientists from Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said. They also cited tidal waves caused by the full moon.

Footage posted on social media showed a pop band named ‘‘Seventeen’’ performing for employees from a local electric company under a tent on a beach as dozens of people sat listening at tables covered in white cloths. As bright strobe lights flashed on stage, a child could be seen wandering through the crowd. Then, as the second song was about to begin with the drummer pounding, the stage suddenly heaved forward, throwing the band and all their equipment into the audience.

Feel for them - So little, yet lose it all - I hope the international community chips in to help those people.

At Least 429 Dead In Indonesian Tsunami, As Residents Warned To Remain Vigilant

The death toll from a tsunami that hit the Sunda Strait coastline of Indonesia over the weekend has risen to 429, according to authorities who issued new warnings on the grim anniversary of an earthquake and tsunami in 2004 that killed a staggering 230,000 people across 14 countries.

NPR's Julie McCarthy reports that relief operations continue for thousands of victims, including many who have lost their homes.

The latest tsunami, spawned by the side of a volcano slipping into the ocean, follows one triggered by a quake that struck just three months ago on Indonesia's Sulawesi island. That temblor and tsunami killed an estimated 2,100 people.

On Wednesday, Indonesian authorities warned that the continued eruption of Anak Krakatau, or "Child of Krakatau" could trigger additional tsunami.

Government workers were monitoring the eruptions and high waves and heavy rain were possible Wednesday, the head of Indonesia's Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency, Dwikorita Karnawati, said.

"All these conditions could potentially cause landslides at the cliffs of the crater into the sea, and we fear that that could trigger a tsunami," she said at a news conference.

According to Singapore's Straits Times newspaper, "On Tuesday, a fresh eruption at the Anak Krakatau volcano sent residents fleeing from coastline areas. Locals and officials alike in Sumur, among the areas worst hit by the tsunami, scrambled for higher ground after hearing a booming sound at about 2:40pm local time."

Channel Asia adds, "Clouds of ash spewed from Anak Krakatoa, almost obscuring the volcanic island where a crater collapse at high tide on Saturday sent waves up to [16 feet] high smashing into the coast on the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra islands."

In the wake of the latest tsunami, Indonesian President Joko Widodo has promised a new early warning system by next year.

A spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency says the country's tsunami warning system has been broken since 2012 due to a lack of funds, passing ships striking the warning buoys, and vandalism.

Indonesia hikes danger level for deadly tsunami volcano

Indonesia on Thursday raised the danger alert level for an erupting volcano that sparked a killer tsunami at the weekend, after previously warning that fresh activity at the crater threatened to trigger another deadly wave.

Authorities also widened a no-go zone around rumbling Anak Krakatoa to five kilometres (three miles) — up from a previous two kilometres — and warned shell-shocked residents to stay away from the coast, after more than 400 were killed by Saturday night’s killer wave.

Plumes of ash burst into the sky as pyroclastic flows — hot gas and other volcanic material — flowed down the crater, threatening anyone too close to the volcano and raising the risk of rough seas for boats in the vicinity.

Indonesia is one of the most disaster-hit nations on Earth due to its position straddling the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire
“There is a danger of more eruptions,” said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

“People (near the volcano) could be hit by hot rocks, pyroclastic flows and thick ash.”

Authorities raised the crater’s status to high alert, the second-highest warning on the country’s four-point danger scale, while aviation officials ordered flights to be redirected away from the area.

“We’ve raised the status of (the volcano) since this morning because there’s been a change in the eruption pattern,” Kus Hendratno, a senior official at the Krakatoa observatory, told AFP Thursday.

The new flows posed no immediate danger to area towns as the volcano sits in the middle of the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra islands.

But the status change sparked new fears with many residents already scared and refusing to return to their communities over fears of another tsunami.

“This worries me,” said Ugi Sugiarti, a cook at the Augusta Hotel in hard-hit Carita. “I’ve already left.”

Sukma, a security guard at the shattered Mutiara Carita Cottages, added: “Just please pray for us and that everything will be okay.”

A section of the crater — which emerged at the site of the Krakatoa volcano, whose massive 1883 eruption killed at least 36,000 people — collapsed after an eruption and slid into the ocean, triggering Saturday night’s killer wave.

The hike in the volcano’s danger alert level sparked new fears with many local residents already scared and refusing to return to their communities over fears of another tsunami

At least 430 people were killed, with 1,495 people injured and another 159 were missing.

Nearly 22,000 people have been evacuated and are living in shelters.

Krakatoa volcano Anak Krakatau erupts in Indonesia
    11 Apr, 2020 10:13am

The world-famous Krakatoa volcano, Anak Krakatau, has erupted in Indonesia, with a fountain of lava and a huge plume of smoke and ash.

There are reports of a "large magmatic eruption" happening right now at the volcano island.

Satellite imagery shows ash several kilometres into the air and a plume as high as 15km.

The webcam on Anak Krakatau Island shows lava erupting from the volcano.

"This seems to be the strongest eruptive phase since the violent phreatomagmatic activity following the partial collapse of the volcano on 22 Dec 2018, which had triggered a deadly tsunami that killed hundreds of people on Java's west coast," reported volcanodiscovery.com.

After that eruption, scientists said the volcano island was reduced to about a quarter of its pre-eruption size.

Strikes me as a perfectly logical place to put it, especially as it refers to "eruptive phase" and not just "eruption".

Hey up, they're all kicking off.

The notorious Krakatoa volcano has erupted off the coast of Indonesia twice on Friday, spewing plumes of ash 500 meters into the air.

The two eruptions were documented at the country's volcanology center on Friday night between 9:58 P.M. and 10:35 P.M. in Jakarta local time. Residents about 93 miles away claimed they heard 'loud rumbles' soon after the eruptions.

Many locals took it to social media to express their worries about the thunderous booms they heard from the eruption. One person from Indonesia even tweeted, 'We are fighting coronavirus. Please, go to sleep.'

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation's (PVMBG) magma volcanic activity report recorded the first eruption lasting one minute and 12 seconds when it spewed out ash and smoke 200 meters high. Furthermore, the second eruption started at 10:35 P.M. and lasted for 38 minutes and 4 seconds. The second eruption spewed out a 500-meter-high column of ash that blew to the north.

Three more volcanoes also displayed elevated activity
on Friday. Mount Kerinci in West Sumatra, Mount Semeru in East Java and Mount Merapi in Central Java, all erupted the same day as Mount Krakatoa.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency's head of data added that PVMBG monitoring presents that the eruption at Krakatoa continued until Saturday morning at 5:44 in Western Indonesian Time. A level two alert status remained in place, being the second-highest on a scale of four. It is considered to be the strongest volcanic activity in Indonesia to date since an eruption in December 2018. There were no casualties reported from the eruption.
