A British airline passenger who verbally abused check-in staff after drinking for four hours before his flight to the UK has been sentenced to three months in jail.


The 37-year-old was also fined Dh2,000 after being found guilty of insulting a policeman and Emirates airline employees during the incident in July.

Officers charged the man with a total of eight counts, including making threats, assaulting an officer and consuming alcohol.

In court last month he admitted drinking but denied the other charges, saying he could not remember anything that took place.

“He started threatening me saying that he was a British citizen and could have me fired and sent back home,” one Emirates employee told Dubai Criminal Court.

“Then he used his mobile phone to take videos of what was happening which unnerved the passengers.”
The incident happened on July 14 as the Briton, who was not named, prepared to fly home.

The dispute arose shortly after the tourist handed over his passport to check-in staff and complained they were taking too long.

“I approached him and identified myself only to be insulted too,” said the police officer called to deal with the incident.

The officer said the traveller also deliberately stepped on his foot, shoved him and threatened to get him fired.

During police questioning, the tourist admitted drinking for four hours in his hotel room before making his way to the airport.

“I was drunk at the time and I can’t remember any of what happened,” he told the court hearing.

The man will be deported after serving his prison sentence.

...imagine the mess if he had been allowed to board: seen a number of his kind on Gulf Air flights returning from BKK...making life miserable for passengers who can hold their alcohol...3 months in the drunk tank should sober him up a bit...

i was drunk at the time,now where have we heard that excuse before.

I remember this pissed Saudi who got on a Gulf Air flight at Don Muaeng and promptly sat in Business. When the stewardess informed him that he had to sit in his economy seat, he went off on one, "I will have you fired, blah blah blah" finishing with "You whore!".

The captain didn't take kindly to that.

Although when the Thais came on to escort the wanker off the plane to the cells, and the captain announced that we'd be delayed while they took his bags off the plane, I don't think he was expecting the riotous round of applause and cheering it got.

A detained British academic is being held after "unusual and embarrassing revelations", according to the foreign affairs minister in the United Arab Emirates.


Matthew Hedges, 31, was detained in May as he tried to leave Dubai airport following a study trip to the region for his PHD at Durham University.


For much of the five months he has been held in solitary confinement and has been given very few details of what he is alleged to have done.


It has been reported that he is being held on suspicion of involvement in espionage.


Now, foreign minister Anwar Gargash - a leading figure in the UAE government - has said in an update posted to his Twitter account: "Case of Mathew (sic) Hedges extensively discussed with UK colleagues over last 5 months.


"Unusual and embarrassing revelations about friends and allies. With reluctance of UK authorities to address matter thru common channels, due legal process needs to take its course."


It is unclear what the alleged revelations relate to and Mr Hedges' wife Daniela is now trying to establish further details though the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).


The UAE's pointed criticism of British diplomatic efforts follows assurances from Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt that he had personally raised the case with his Emirati counterparts.


The intervention from the UAE government comes hours after Mr Hedges' wife Daniela Tejada spoke to Sky News to try and highlight her husband's plight.


The couple met at Exeter University in 2010


She said: "It is absurd. I think if he was a spy he would be terrible, he would be far too conspicuous.


"He was doing his research, he was very open about what he was doing."


Mr Hedges' PhD was in Emirati security policies after the Arab Spring and included work on the Muslim brotherhood.


Ms Tejada acknowledges that his work has the potential to be controversial, especially in the UAE.


She said: "But he is a very knowledgeable person in his field.


"He would never have taken a risk that would have taken him to this extent. He never expected the UAE to adopt this absurd attitude and to think of him as any threat."


Before he made his research trip, Mr Hedges had been diagnosed with anxiety and depression and had been due to start non-medicated treatment on his return to the UK.


Ms Tejada said: "He told me recently that his only method to let go of his nerves is vomiting.


"He has been vomiting every day for the last three months. He has had medical treatment but I do not know to what extent it has been appropriate because he has been prescribed anti-depression, anti-anxiety and sleeping pills."


The pressure group Detained in Dubai has described the intervention from the UAE foreign minister as a "smear" on Mr Hedges that is "designed to save face".


Chief executive Radha Stirling told Sky News: "The smear has been a new reaction from the UAE to try to counter negative press they receive from foreign countries.


"They started using this tactic for the first time last year. It is their attempt to save face."


She is also calling on other academic institutions to follow Durham University's lead and temporarily stop academics visiting the UAE until Mr Hedges' case is clarified.


Ms Stirling added: "There needs to be an urgent re-think. Researchers, academics, writers, human rights lawyers and activists cannot feel secure visiting the country."


Mr Hedges is due to have a court hearing about his case on 24 October.


The FCO has been asked for comment.

Oh Hick, i've flown in the 90's from Nepal with guys straight from the hills. Back then it was a sport to watch them as the food was served gazing around for a steer what to do, cruel fuckers would show them the roll, break a piece off, butter it and then empty the salt sachet on the 1 inch piece, make to put it in your mouth and watch them pop it in chewing away, rinse and repeat . They of course couldn't show any emotion just gratitude. By the third flight I started spoiling their fun its just wrong. They'd stand on the shitter and break the seat or miss it totally, you'd want to be in and out early in the flight. Felt sorry for them.

A British PhD student has been charged with spying for a foreign government in the United Arab Emirates. Matthew Hedges, 31, has reportedly been held in solitary confinement since he was arrested at Dubai airport on May 5, and could be facing ten years in an Emirati prison if convicted. His wife, Daniela Tejada, said the allegations are not true and he is ‘absolutely not a spy.’

After the charges were announced today, the country’s foreign minister Dr Anwar Gargash tweeted that there would be ‘unusual and embarrassing revelations’ about the student’s ‘friends and allies’. Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, former adviser to Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan and political expert, wrote on twitter: ‘Durham U PhD student Matthew Hedges appeared at Abu Dhabi court today.

‘He was officially charged spying for a foreign government backed by all the legal evidences. ‘His rights were fully guaranteed during investigations.His embassy was also informed about his case all along.’ It is understood Mr Hedges had been travelling to the UAE to interview sources about the country’s foreign policy and security strategy.

His wife said that he was completing a PhD on Emirati security policies after the Arab Spring, and that his rights are being violated ‘on a daily basis’. It is thought he partially grew up in Dubai, so understood the sensitivity of the subject he was studying, and has since been taken to Abu Dhabi.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt is thought to have personally raised Mr Hedges’s case with his UAE counterpart amid concerns over his mental health and wellbeing. British officials have visited Mr Hedges twice, although he is said to have been prevented from discussing his case with them. Ms Tejada said all she wants ‘is for Matt to come home safely’.

‘We cannot believe this has happened,’ she said in a statement. ‘We have been patient and done everything that has been advised, supposedly in Matt’s best interest, but we can no longer go on like this.

‘Matt is a brilliant researcher, a man of integrity, and he has been punished in the most unjust and unfair way. His rights are violated on a daily basis and I am shocked that more has not been done to get him out. ‘Matt is a British citizen; he visited the UAE exclusively for academic research purposes and has been detained without charge for over five months in an undisclosed location. This is appalling and more must be done to ensure he is safely brought home.’ According to a profile on the Durham University website, Mr Hedges’s research includes Middle Eastern politics, the changing nature of war, civil-military relations and tribalism.

Ms Tejada said the UK should review its educational ties with the UAE in light of Mr Hedges’s detention, warning academic researchers like him ‘face great risks in the UAE’. She said: ‘All I want is for Matt to come home safely. The longer this goes on, the longer the recovery from this traumatic experience will take. ‘I am extremely worried about Matt’s mental health and general wellbeing. I am shocked and confused by the whole situation and will do everything I can to make sure he comes home soon.’ The vice-chancellor of Durham University said the university is ‘seriously concerned’ about Mr Hedge’s welfare.

Professor Stuart Corbridge said: ‘We are aware that one of our PhD students, Matt Hedges, has been detained in Abu Dhabi. ‘We are seriously concerned about Matt’s welfare and well being and we remain in close contact with his family. ‘We have raised these concerns with the UK Ambassador to the UAE, the Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and local MPs, and we continue to offer our full assistance to efforts to bring Matt home safely and swiftly.’ A Foreign Office spokesman said: ‘Our staff are supporting a British man following his detention in the UAE. We are assisting his family and remain in close contact with authorities. ‘The Foreign Secretary has also personally raised his case with his Emirati counterpart.’
