Wearing helmets mandatory for both drivers and passengers

BANGKOK, 27 September 2018 (NNT) - Traffic police have been instructed to enforce traffic regulations rigorously across Bangkok to ensure motorcycle drivers and their passengers wear helmets while on the road.

Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Pol Maj Gen Jirapat Phumchit, said anyone found breaking the law will be fined on the spot.

The Deputy Commissioner added the goal is to have every driver and passenger follow the law by wearing helmets at all times.

He also claimed that 60% of road injuries and deaths were related to motorcycles, insisting that police are more concerned about road safety than collecting fines.

Guessing everyone is going to ignore that law because you don't drive a motorbike.

Didn't they bring out a law, a year or so ago, that people weren't allowed to ride in the back of a pick-up? They then reneged on it when they realised how counterproductive it was? This will go the same way.

    It's brilliant.
Now everyone will be safe and no one will die on a motorbike.
    Regardless of their driving techniques.
And I'm sure the helmets will of great quality and safe and sound.
Not the ones sold in Lotus and wider.
It's also good to know that the passengers of Bangkok will now be safe.
Fuck the rest of the country.

    Brilliant.

On another thread we're told Thai GDP would improve by 22% with safer roads. I reckon the country could magically be given the best roads, bridges, canals, airports, communications and other infrastructure in the world, and not even this would compensate for the traditional mindset.

Our glorious leaders should be thinking long term if they have any hope to shed Thailand's 3rd World badge of shame, and the place to begin is with education, rather than a temporary whimsical enforcement of one tiny piece of legislation.

Refer to end of para 1, that the police need to be ordered to enforce this hopelessly flexible law.

I imagine the helmets would be useful and less messy, keeping the brain and the bits and pieces from splattering on the road.

How do the motorcycle taxi guys intend to handle this? An expandable helmet that fits all with a sanitation ring which is changed every trip.

Apparently statistics show that 90% of men masturbate and the other 10% were liars.

I think it was for Songkran, wasn't it?

They decided it would be unpopular, so they ditched it.

This is just saying they will start enforcing an existing law, which says it all, really.

'Thai cops in enforcing laws shocker!'

But not the rest of the country...who cares what the fate of the peasants is.
Is there a law of the land, and if so, why is it only important in BKK?

They didn't back-down on that because it was counter-productive, they reversed their attitude when people complained that pickups were their only people-movers. Money comes first. And they announced kids can't drive bikes, but too many people (parents!) complained that the kids have no other way of getting to school (never considered walking or public transport).
TIT Yeah, it will be a two week pogrom, and then forgotten.

Actually, you arn't far of the mark with that observation ... even if tongue in cheek.

After an accident, it's unusual for a paramedic to remove a helmet, just in-case it's holding all the bits together.

What if your passenger-du-jour is an African lady with braided hair extensions tied up in monster B-52 beehive-bun that took her all evening to do?

And the limiting of passengers in/on a minibus who also have to be seat-belted. Plus I believe all public service minibuses have to be fitted with GPS.

Some of the African ladies of the evening have magnificent bumpers it has to be said and would be truly an asset in the event of an unexpected rear-ending which makes them a safety boon for the pilot tucked safely upfront between those Serena-esque thighs!

How the hell are Thai women going to preen their hair with a helmet on?

Out this way it's women that usually wear helmets, keeps the sun off their face, don't want to get darker skin.

Truth. About 28 years ago they enforced if for about a couple or three months here in BKK. There was no skytrain, MRT, or metered taxis at that time. But they did crack down.

So little dinky cheap helmets emerged from the motorcycle drivers. Went on your head they did, but that was about all. But soon the Thai's realized that a lot of people had worn that helmet before them. So more important than the helmet was the shower cap you brought to protect your hair. Hotel freebies were the most popular.

    Then enforcement died out...
