Bangkok to grant certificates to tattoo artists

BANGKOK, 14 September 2018 (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will grant certificates to tattoo artists in an attempt to improve the quality and safety of the city's tattoo studios.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Taweesak Lertprapan held a meeting on tattoo studio business in Bangkok with delegates from the Ministry of Public Health, the Food and Drugs Administration, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's (BMA) Department of Health.

He said that Bangkok currently has some 4,000 tattoo artists and that the BMA is seeking to upgrade the professional quality of tattoo studios to ensure hygiene and safety of the operating venues and equipment.

Tattoo artists will also be required to have knowledge about infection prevention and put up warning signs to protect their customers.

He added the tattoo artists association will hold a meeting later this month to discuss the code of conduct for professional tattoo artists.

After the code of conduct has been agreed upon by all sides, the BMA will start issuing certificates to tattoo artists who comply with the standards.

Not a bad idea with honorable intent regarding safety, hygiene, and health.
Weeding out the more unscrupulous tattooists by collective association, licensing, and certification.

It appears that it won't be mandatory. I predict that a few tattoo artists will get a certificate and the rest will ignore the proposal.

In an unrelated story, I saw some tourists tattoo pics on social networks... It was Thai script tattoos...the gentled ones featured popular meals name instead of the tattooed transliterated name (or some vague notions terms such as strength, courage etc or for the boldest a proverb which rarely has its equivalent in Thai language), and the meaner featured offensive sentences such "I'm a c**t and c**t like me", "I like eating p***y"...

I imagine the tourists boasting their new tats once back home ... No arm done thought until they met a Thai bold enough to tell them the meaning or till they go back to Thailand ....

Maybe the code of conduct should address this issue too...

That current feature is making it's rounds throughout the social media/forum worlds.
Per usual, the unsuspecting Farang is quite unaware of the script being tattooed, supposedly being told that the tattoo is rather benign - when it's not.

See this, more fashionably, with Chinese characters - not even understanding the depth of the meaning.

Harks back to the European's fascination with the exotic and mysterious Orient - yet they haven't a clue.
More stories on the clever and amused Asian having on up on the always fake world-weary and innocent blue-eyed devils.

    ^

I wouldn't trust any tattooist to do any translation/transliteration work for me...if I had the intent to have a Thai, Chinese or any other language writing tattooed on my body I would do my homework and submit it to a number of natives beforehand...and when I'm 99% sure of the writing I would go to the tattoo shop as when it's inked you can't easily erase it/cover it.
