Chiang Mai bids to become World Heritage site

CHIANG MAI, 12th September 2018 (NNT) - The Chiang Mai World Heritage Working Group has completed its paperwork and is ready to propose to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to make Chiang Mai a World Heritage city.

The Culture Minister, Vira Rojpojchanarat, said on Wednesday (Sept 12) that Chiang Mai City, with its ancient history, culture and natural environment, should be conserved and developed sustainably with all sides' participation to become a World Heritage site.

Thai and international experts and academics will be invited to exchange their knowledge and experiences of international heritage in relation to historic cities to explore ways to ensure sustainable development to support Chiang Mai in its bid to attain World Heritage status.

Since 2015, Chiang Mai City has been among Thailand's six sites on a tentative list for consideration for World Heritage status. According to the process, the sites must be on that list for at least one year before they can be nominated for full status.

Thailand’s five world heritage sites are currently: the Ban Chiang Archaeological Site in Udon Thani; the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex; the Historic City of Ayutthaya; the Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns; and the Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries.

I've seen more culture in a pot of yoghurt. Their "ancient history" is remnants of a wall.

Natural environment? That's a fucking laugh.

Which all means they'll probably get it.

    Respectful, Harry.

The wall's been rebuilt a few times, too.

When I was there I read that the city of Chiang Mai was abandoned twice because there were too many tigers in the area.

Construction of Wat Pra Singh, as an example, began in 1345.

Chiang Mai has had a pretty turbulent history, so some ancient sites have had to be rebuilt.

OK, Angkor it is not...but it's certainly much more than just a wall.

Blasphemy! Don’t you talk bad about my charming little Chiang Mai! Especially when I miss it sorely. (Except for the traffic and the Chinese tourists.)

Aside from the politics involved, such a move can only be a beneficial plus for the region and Thailand, in general.

I see Ban Chiang is already on the list. I mean I know there's some old slappers there, but calling it an archaeological site is a bit mean spirited.

So Jeff, the person who constantly whinges about tourists, thinks the inevitable surge in tourism is a plus.

Make your fucking mind up, eh Jeff.

As for "Natural Environment', I wonder what all those Chinkies will think of the horrible scar on Doi Suthep from where the judges decided they and their cronies fancied a holiday village.

Or the carbuncle that is the convention centre.

Not about the tourists [fuck 'em all] but more attuned toward honouring historic preservation.

Keep up with the game, would ya Harry....

This proposal is unlikely to cover all the city, maybe the moat, and all the land up to the other side of the river (which includes not so much historical places such as Loy Kro reddish light district, night bazar and big hotel around) in order to cover the scattered temples with some history...and maybe some out of town spots like wat udom, wat doi suthep....

But then a foreign body will have a say on what the governor can and should do...not sure the local authorities would like it but well it's high time to solve some issues...
