Three-year-old dies in Thailand after being left in school van

BANGKOK (AFP) - A three-year-old kindergartener died after she was left behind in a hot school van in Thailand, police said on Thursday (Aug 16) after arresting the driver.

The girl was discovered on Wednesday (Aug 15) afternoon after her mother went to pick her up at the end of school in the southern province of Pattani and was told the child was absent.

The mother and a teacher located the driver, who led them to the locked van where they found the body.

"The girl's body was pale, no wounds, with a little blood stain at her nose," Montri Kongwatmai, commander of the Sai Buri district police, told AFP. "She must have thrashed around."

The heat inside the stuffy van and a lack of air caused her death, Montri said, citing the autopsy results.

The 23-year-old driver admitted to failing to check whether all the children had gotten out of the vehicle in the morning, Montri said.

He was charged with negligence resulting in death.

Between 2012 and 2016 in Thailand, there were 13 cases of children abandoned inside school buses or private cars, statistics show, part of a worldwide phenomenon referred to as "Forgotten Baby Syndrome". Six of the cases were fatal.

The previous such death occurred in June when a five-year-old was left in a school van in Khon Kaen province.

"The problem with child deaths in school vans... is that (it) keeps repeating itself due to the negligence of the service provider," Adisak Plitponkarnpim, director of the Thailand's National Institute of Child and Family Development.

The syndrome keeps repeating itself,...due to the negligence of government legislators...to seriously enact training, licensing and regulatory statutes,...governing the actions of school bus drivers.

RIP little girl. I hope the driver is tormented mentally and truly repents, and makes significant moves to educate his peers on this issue.
As a side comment, I believe that now in Australia it is not only legal, but legally incumbent on any passers by to break a vehicle's window if a child or pet is inside a hot car.
I wonder what the repercussions would be for a farang in Thailand if he/she broke a car window to rescue a pet or child.

    Jaysus.... again.

The problem with a populace that can only compute what is directly in front of their eyes.

And flashing. With boing-boing sound effects.

The bus company needs to be fined and closed down with the management team being investigated for negligence.

The main problem here is people are given responsibilities without receiving proper training.

    Procedure should be:

    1. Headcount on to the bus.
    2. Head count off the bus and matching numbers.
    3. Inspect the bus for personal items invariably left behind by children when leaving the bus and at the same time check for stragglers.

    Not too difficult!

    RIP little girl!

Most professionally managed school buses in Pattaya has a driver and a children management coordinator who monitors the kids during the trip and especially when leaving the bus.

    This should be law now.

Says something that any civilised country makes it a legal obligation for passers by to help save a trapped child. Before this genius piece of legislation did they stand around taking vids?

Ditto you on the legal implications in Thailand if someone breaks a car window to save a trapped dog, and also if it's a top shelf motor or owned by a uniform?

Yeah, that was the gist of my question (but also a rusty old peasant's truck with the owners feeling agreived at the breaking of the window). Would the court say to the vehicle owner, "You made a mistake and the broken window is your price for that mistake"? Dog or baby.

Or would the court say provocation, after he levels out your head?

f*ck sakes. ^^^ its not a bus company. Its not a company at all. Its the husband of a teacher. Who has a van. Who drives neighbourhood kids to school. Yes he is an idiot. No regulations implemented will stop this. How do you make common sense a regulation.
They don't need to do a head count in a van, its a van! all they have to do is take a look around when they are finished.

RIP little girl, her last hours here were traumatic.

spot on M.we see it every day,the van is driven by an absolute idiot, who doesn't care one iota,as long as he gets the envelope every week or month from the parents, who are also to blame as well,WHY? they don't care a fuck, who are the drivers, have they a licence,is the van insured,as long as they don't have tp pay a premium price, for a safe driver and a good service.thai culture,CHEAP IS BETTER.
