Committee set up to stop the killing of tourists.

Thailand is aiming to restore confidence in the destination in the wake of the Phuket boat disaster, in which 47 Chinese holidaymakers died, with the launch of a National Tourism Safety and Security Committee.

The committe will be overseen by tourism and sports minister Weerasak Kowsurat.

Weerasak said guidance issued by the committee will not only focus on marine tourism but also on land-based attractions and crime reduction.

He has instructed the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to create new preventive safety and crisis management manuals.

Following the sinking of the Phoenix boat, Thailand has seen mass cancellations from China, which is its largest source market and accounts for more than a third of all travellers to the country.

TAT will soon announce special promotional packages for the Chinese market targeting the peak Golden Week period in October.

A fact-finding tour of Switzerland would be just the ticket for all committee members.

Nice in August - and no deaths at sea there.

They could always do Hawaii again.

On Wednesday, Srisuwan Janya, head of the Association for the Protection of the Constitution, a government watchdog, petitioned the Office of the Auditor-General to investigate expenses incurred on the Thai Airways flight.

These expenses included 600,000 baht ($17,200) spent on in-flight food and beverages, according to details posted on the Secretariat of the Prime Minister’s website.

The Office of the Auditor-General on Friday said it had scrutinized expenses incurred on the Hawaii trip and found nothing wrong.

Dillinger spends that on a flight to KL. and back.

Lets not ask how much your Vietnamese sea plane costs or all my "essential trips" to SE Asia on the company dime.

I don't even think your economy class sales trips can run up 17 grand on inflight goodies, especially when the food and drink are probably already provided - let alone get past the accountants.

An appropriate place to launch this scheme should be Koh Tao.

The culling of tourists just might be the next attraction.

I was thinking along the lines of the more undesirable Farang types - residents and tourists alike.
    Great sport for the locals.

    Bloody ridiculous, innit.

    As for the committee...
    How about,
1.Serious prison time, swiftly and consistantly applied, to all tourist operators who step so much as a millimetre outside the laws and regulations wrt safety measures.
2.Random and frequent checks and inspections to ensure 1. above.

I think a world tour is well deserved, to see how other countries protect their tourists.

Being, then, a highly valued member of staff had it's perks.

What value do these Thai travellers bring to the country, somebody thinks they do.

I'm not sure they need new measures to enhance safety, just enforce existing rules (control, fine, inpound...)

But I think they might go over the top, like in CM Huay Thung Thao (lake on the way to Mae Rim) were a Thai (possibly drunk but not sure) drowned while trying to swim across the lake, now they have set up a line along the shore between 5 meters up to 15 m beyond which it is forbidden to swim to prevent drowning...it kills the fun for any average to good swimmers.
