A Chinese developer has taken the concept of luxury hotel resorts to a new level for guests willing to dig deep.

The world's first "ground-scraper" hotel — plunging 88 metres into an old quarry on the fringes of Shanghai — is set to open its doors to the public today.

The 18-storey Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland includes two entire floors of underwater suites looking into a large aquarium, while guests on the other levels get panoramic views of an artificial waterfall on the opposite side of the quarry.

The swanky five-star resort, also known as Shimao Quarry Hotel, has reportedly taken 12 years and some 5,000 architects, engineers, designers and construction workers to build.

Located 30 kilometres from Shanghai's Hongqiao airport in the Sheshan Mountain Range, the 336-room hotel comes complete with sports and recreation facilities including rock climbing and bungee jumping.

While the hotel has already had a soft opening earlier this month for invited guests only, room reservations will officially open to the public today.

Strong winds and a towering ‘sand wall’ of almost 100 metres hit the northwestern city of Zhangye.

China's 'flaunt your wealth' challenge goes viral with people falling out of cars with luxury goods


People pose as if they have just fallen head-first out of the car, spilling their belongings in the process.

Photos of people lying face down on the ground — surrounded by luxury bags, shoes, and sometimes wads of cash — have gone viral on Chinese social media.

Key points:

• The posts sparked a series of satirical memes including tradesmen posing with their tools
• Challenge highlights China's growing middle class who have greater purchasing power
• Experts say it's common for Chinese netizens to express their feelings with photos on social media

The bizarre trend — dubbed the "flaunt your wealth challenge" — has generated more than a million posts on Chinese social platform Weibo in the past two weeks.


More than 60,000 Instagram users have aslo participated in the challenge since August.


China's growing army of social media influencers have played a role in popularising the meme, sharing images of themselves participating in the challenge with their followers.

Dressed up in their finery, the influencers usually pose as if they've just fallen head first out of a luxury car and spilled their most valuable possessions onto the pavement.

The trend has puzzled many an outside viewer as to what the appeal may be, and the increased attention has not been an all-round positive experience for the participants.

Chinese schools have begun enforcing "smart uniforms" embedded with computer chips to monitor student movements
and prevent them from skipping classes.

• A GPS system tracks student movements even beyond the school grounds
• Beijing has made regular calls on all schools to develop "smart campuses"

Eleven schools in the south-west province of Guizhou have introduced the uniforms, which were developed by local tech firm Guizhou Guanyu Technology.

As students enter the school, the time and date is recorded along with a short video that parents can access via a mobile app.

Facial recognition further ensures that each uniform is worn by its rightful owner to prevent students from cheating the system.


Skipping classes triggers an alarm to inform teachers and parents of the truancy, while an automatic voice alarm activates if a student walks out of school without permission.

A GPS system tracks student movements even beyond the school grounds.


The two chips — inserted into each uniform's shoulders — can withstand up to 500 washes and 150 degrees Celsius, the company told state media Global Times.

Alarms will also sound if a student falls asleep in class, while parents can monitor purchases their child makes at the school and set spending limits via a mobile app, according to the company's official website.

It'll be implants for all before long.
