The weird and somewhat wacky stuff that goes on in China

I'm starting a new thread with the focus on the weird and somewhat wacky stuff that goes on in China

This thread https://teakdoor.com/thailand-and-asi...na-thread.html has become something
completely different from what I envisioned.

    ---

    So, starting with ...

'Barbaric': Coffins destroyed, seized as Chinese province executes hard-line 'burial-free policy'

The weird and somewhat wacky stuff that goes on in China-10060822-3x2-940x627-jpg
More than 5,000 coffins were surrendered last month, but not always voluntarily

Authorities in China's south-east have confiscated, destroyed, and even exhumed coffins in accordance with
a controversial "zero burial" policy, according to local media reports.

    Key points:
    • Officials in Jiangxi province confiscated more than 5,000 coffins last month
    • Some rural families have to save for years to buy the coffins
    • Footage on Chinese social media showed authorities using force to seize coffins

The Jiangxi Provincial Government wants locals to only cremate their loved ones' remains, but poor families in rural areas of
China often spend a fortune saving up for coffins and expensive burial rituals.

The hardline roll-out of the policy — which is reportedly being executed to adopt more "eco-friendly" practices but observers
suggest is a bid to preserve land space — has even drawn rebuke from Beijing state media as "barbaric".

Footage on Chinese social media shows officials removing coffins from homes, and facing resistance from the owners.
After being seized, the coffins were placed side by side and smashed to pieces using excavators.

World's first 'ground-scraper' hotel built in former quarry opens its doors to the public in China

    Source

A Chinese developer has taken the concept of luxury hotel resorts to a new level for guests willing to dig deep.

    Key points:

    • The hotel took 12 years to build after being fraught with delays and challenges
    • The rooms cost up to $14,580 per night
    • Sports and recreation facilities include rock climbing and bungee jumping

The world's first "ground-scraper" hotel — plunging 88 metres into an old quarry on the fringes of Shanghai — is set to open its doors to the public today.

The 18-storey Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland includes two entire floors of underwater suites looking into a large aquarium, while guests on the other levels get panoramic views of an artificial waterfall on the opposite side of the quarry.

The swanky five-star resort, also known as Shimao Quarry Hotel, has reportedly taken 12 years and some 5,000 architects, engineers, designers and construction workers to build.

Located 30 kilometres from Shanghai's Hongqiao airport in the Sheshan Mountain Range, the 336-room hotel comes complete with sports and recreation facilities including rock climbing and bungee jumping.

While the hotel has already had a soft opening earlier this month for invited guests only, room reservations will officially open to the public today.

^ They are fucking idiots when it comes to food.
The latest big health scare is the discovery that vegetables kept in the fridge overnight will cause diabetes if eaten the next day.
Oh, and let's not forget. Microwaved food causes cancer.

The latest one I've been reading only references to, haven't bothered to read into the details, is that romain lettuce is bad for you.

But those health scare things aside...who TF would eat eggs, with broken shells, boiled in a stranger's urine?

    Aside from Earl.

China's 'flaunt your wealth' challenge goes viral with people falling out of cars with luxury goods

The weird and somewhat wacky stuff that goes on in China-10418316-3x2-940x627-jpg
People pose as if they have just fallen head-first out of the car, spilling their belongings in the process.

Photos of people lying face down on the ground — surrounded by luxury bags, shoes, and sometimes wads of cash — have gone viral on Chinese social media.

    Key points:
    • The posts sparked a series of satirical memes including tradesmen posing with their tools
    • Challenge highlights China's growing middle class who have greater purchasing power
    • Experts say it's common for Chinese netizens to express their feelings with photos on social media

The bizarre trend — dubbed the "flaunt your wealth challenge" — has generated more than a million posts on Chinese social platform Weibo in the past two weeks.

The weird and somewhat wacky stuff that goes on in China-10418348-3x2-940x627-jpg
More than 60,000 Instagram users have aslo participated in the challenge since August.

China's growing army of social media influencers have played a role in popularising the meme, sharing images of themselves participating in the challenge with their followers.

Dressed up in their finery, the influencers usually pose as if they've just fallen head first out of a luxury car and spilled their most valuable possessions onto the pavement.

The trend has puzzled many an outside viewer as to what the appeal may be, and the increased attention has not been an all-round positive experience for the participants.

I wonder what would be on show if the Thai Lassies followed suite

High-Ranking Chinese Intelligence Officer Jailed For Life in Corruption Case

"Ma Jian, the former deputy head of China's Ministry of State Security, was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday after being found guilty of taking huge bribes, using his position to exert influence on business deals and insider trading.

At the Dalian Intermediate Court in northeast China, Ma confessed to all charges, stressing that he would not be appealing the conviction. The court subsequently revoked his political rights and ordered Ma's personal property to be confiscated. Additionally, he was also instructed to pay more than $7.26 million in penalties, Al Jazeera reported."

    https://sputniknews.com/asia/2018122...rruption-case/

When will the Chinese adopt the western "rules based internationally adopted" laws and institutions. Such a backward country eh?

Senior state officials sentenced to life in prison, taking bribes, insider trading, his right to vote rescinded, his wealth confiscated and an additional fine.

The Chinese are having a laugh. Is it an end of year tradition like April 1st? Does Uncle Xi have a new year's pardon sheet?

A tray full of GOLD is not worth a moment in time.

Chinese schools enforce 'smart uniforms' with GPS tracking system to monitor students

The weird and somewhat wacky stuff that goes on in China-10672408-3x2-940x627-jpg
Smart Uniform:- Facial recognition ensures that each uniform is worn by its rightful owner.

Chinese schools have begun enforcing "smart uniforms" embedded with computer chips to monitor student movements
and prevent them from skipping classes.

    Key points:

    • Skipping class or leaving the classroom without permission triggers an alarm
    • A GPS system tracks student movements even beyond the school grounds
    • Beijing has made regular calls on all schools to develop "smart campuses"

Eleven schools in the south-west province of Guizhou have introduced the uniforms, which were developed by local tech firm Guizhou Guanyu Technology.

As students enter the school, the time and date is recorded along with a short video that parents can access via a mobile app.

Facial recognition further ensures that each uniform is worn by its rightful owner to prevent students from cheating the system.

Skipping classes triggers an alarm to inform teachers and parents of the truancy, while an automatic voice alarm activates if a student walks out of school without permission.

A GPS system tracks student movements even beyond the school grounds.

The two chips — inserted into each uniform's shoulders — can withstand up to 500 washes and 150 degrees Celsius, the company told state media Global Times.

Alarms will also sound if a student falls asleep in class, while parents can monitor purchases their child makes at the school and set spending limits via a mobile app, according to the company's official website.
