Livestock Dpt buys pineapples to produce cow feed

SA KAEO, 28th June 2018 (NNT)-Livestock Department Interim Director-general Dr. Sorawit Thaneto, recently presided over the opening ceremony of a pineapple-for-animal feed project which is aimed at tackling an oversupply of pineapples in the East of Thailand.

Dr. Sorawit, was joined by Sa Kaeo Vice Governor Narong Nakornjinda, President of Wangnamyen Diary Cooperatives Amnuay Tongkok and others from relevant agencies during the ceremony.

In light of the oversupply of pineapples, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives instructed the Livestock Department to address the issue by seeking cooperation from Wangnamyen Diary Cooperatives and Nikhom Rayong Agriculture Cooperative.

More than 1,000 tons of poor quality pineapples have been bought from farmers in four eastern provinces for the production of cattle feed. Dr. Sorawit claimed pineapple-based feed, despite costing 10 baht more than rice hay at 117 baht per kilogram, would enable a dairy cow to produce up to 14 kilograms of milk per day.

For one ton of dairy cow feed, 630 kilograms of pineapple will be mixed with 142 kilograms of dried grass, 133 kilograms of soybean meal, 44 kilograms of palm fruit and 51 kilograms of shredded cassava. The mixture will be fermented for seven days before it is ready to be fed to the cows.

I don't know. There are many examples of feed tainting bodily fluids or flesh. Classic example is celery making semen palatable, so I'm told. Too much pumpkin in a pig's diet turns the fat yellow. The flavour of wood pigeons changes as the seasonal fruits change. Mother's milk can be tainted by certain things. Certain things will taint milk.
Pineapple strikes me as having the quality to taint either flesh or milk.

A while back I read a scientific paper which mostly went over my head, but got out of it that pineapple is the only thing that eats you as you eat it. Weird, eh, though might explain why it tenderises beef.

^Has a mild acid which softens tough meat. Milk (lactic acid) also a good agent for beef and lamb.

^ I thought it was enzymes.
    Google time.

    Yes, an enzyme.

"The enzyme inpineapple, bromelain, digests protein, softening the tissues in meat before cooking it. ... Most juice manufacturers pasteurize the juice, a process that kills the enzymes that tenderize the protein found in meat."
So bottled or cartoned juice is no good.
I did use fresh pineapple on some Thai beef...ended up with sludge.

It's a bit of an aphrodisiac, too.

Where I live they've over produced on bananas and been feeding the surplus to the pigs. So much so the pigs have stopped eating them. Came home the other day and my missus had loads of bananas given to her by someone who raises pigs. They can't get rid of them so they tried palming some off free to my missus as they know she make a nice banana cake. Looks like there'll be an oversupply of banana cake soon.

Banana jam is the way to go. Keeps just as well as any other jam.

There's a thought; Banana and pineapple jam! I think the combination would work, and the pineapple would supply the pectin (banana jam you have to add ripe lemon juice to help it set).

Just a dribble and top up with water and ice. It is too sickly sweet/sour otherwise.

Prior to this development it has been common in my area to feed cows with the outer skin of pineapples after the fruit has been removed for canning, juice or whatever.

Deceased poster on here 'Piwanoi' used to use the peeled skins to make lovely wine. He used to get the peeling from the fruit sellers at the market.

If one has the time and know how, pineapple is a great conduit for the making of distilled spirits as well.
    Quite nice.
