About 100 WWII bombs found at a construction site on Rajvithi road

About 100 dummy bombs from the Second World War era were found at a construction site on Rajvithi road not far away from Krung Thon bridge on Monday.

Police were alerted about the finding of the bombs by a supervisor at the construction site and a team of explosive ordnance disposal officials was rushed to the scene for examination.

Pol Col Kamthorn Ouicharoen, superintendent of EOD of Metropolitan Police Bureau, said that there were altogether 98 dummy bombs of BDU-33 type each weighing 25 pounds and 1.5 feet long and five training rockets.

Initial checks of all the bombs show they are out of order, he added.

Pol Gen Srivara Rangsibrahmanakul, the deputy national police chief, made a field inspection at the scene in the morning. A press conference was scheduled in the afternoon.

Defence Ministry spokesman Maj-Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich said he had not received a report abouto the bomb yet, but had instructed the Air Force Ordnance Department to coordinate with police EOD to examine the area where the bombs were found and to make sure that they are safe.

He noted that the area and its surroundings were targets for air raids during the Second World War and it was possible that many bombs were dropped there and were not properly retrieved over the years since the end of the war.

He, however, said that the matter would be discussed at a meeting of the Defence Ministry this afternoon.

That's either really good grouping or an ammo dump.

They're bombs with the nose fuses missing. Obviously they're 'live' but just never got primed. Best blow them up to be sure.
