Tourist fell 100ft to his death whilst posing for a photograph on waterfall

He lost his footing and plunged to his death in front of his horrified friends at around 12pm. (Picture: Mercury)A tourist fell to his death while posing for a picture on top of a 100ft waterfall.

Czech national Jiri Barta, 32, travelled to the beauty spot on Thai island Koh Samui on Thursday with a group of eight other holidaymakers, including one Briton.

The man shuffled to the edge of a cliff next to the Khun Sri waterfall while a friend took a photograph.
However he then lost his footing and plunged to his death in front of his horrified friends at around 12pm.
Friends rushed down and desperately battled to resuscitate him without success.

Rescue workers arrived a short time later and he was pronounced dead at the scene before being taken to hospital for a post mortem examination.

Devastated friend Miss Romana Uassara, 30, said the group had arrived in Thailand on February 5 and they had rented five motorcycles to travel around the island.

She said: ‘We were just admiring the beauty of the waterfall and he walked over to the edge for a picture.

‘The edge is so steep and he fell onto his back. It took a long time for his body to hit the bottom. I don’t know why.
‘We went down and he was still alive. We tried to do CPR and asked for help from villagers in the neighbourhood.’
Boonchai Wannawatchanasuntorn of Koh Samui’s tourist police, said rescuers spent five hours negotiating the deadly terrain to retrieve the body.

He said: ‘There is a sign in both Thai and English barring people from entering, but tourists keep ignoring it.'
‘The edge is so steep and he fell onto his back. It took a long time for his body to hit the bottom. I don’t know why.’ ‘Accidents happened often because the slope is very steep, at almost 90 degrees, and it is very slippery.’
The treacherous waterfall has been declared off-limits after a series of falls.

Last year, Eastenders star Paul Nicholls spent three days trapped at the waterfall after falling on the slippery surface. The actor survived in humid mosquito-plagued temperatures by drinking water from the stream before he was rescued with a shattered knee.

Lieutenant Colonel Piyawat Chunwat said: ‘This is a very dangerous area and we advise all tourist to stay away and be extra careful.
‘The rescue and recovery of the body was made more difficult by the steep cliffs and dangerous conditions.’

I don't get how the 90° temperature had much to do with his fall. I do understand that being trapped and dehydrated one may drink from a stream.

Paul Nichols must have been pretty embarrassed by them bringing in the American Indian Shattered Knee to rescue him.

Just kidding, RIP fellow adventurer. I've been out on a ledge myself for no good reason but a shot and a thrill.

That's why next time I head to Tad Fane I'm bringing a rope, no joke.
    And a swimsuit and towel.

Doesn't take much of a fall to get killed. Local project had two construction workers get blown off a 12 foot high roof in a windstorm. Both had snapped aortas during the autopsy. Be careful out there.

That's true thanks for the reminder. I knew a guy that died a few years ago by falling off a stepladder while hanging up Christmas lights.

Sorry to hear about those two fellows.
