^Yes, it's Sa-yam = สยาม.
Ohh.. I posted after DrB0b from the first page, didn't see whether it's more than 1 page.
We already had this argument on another forum. For those of you who didn't formally study Thai, but still speak ok, I believe it's SEE-AM, or SEE-OM.
But don't Thais refer to their country as Phratet Thai? (Country Thai)
The whole Thailand name is just for foreigners -- like Bangkok (and Japan for that matter.) Japanese refer to their country as Nihon.
What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Siam was never colonized, but has already become a modern nation-state under King Chulalongkorn or Rama V (1868-1910), but it was under King Vajiravudh (1910-1925) that nationalism arose.
Phibun Songkhram built on that fact and even had a monument for Rama VI erected in front of Lumbini Park and opposite the Dusit Thani Hotel in Bangkok.
The theory that Nan-Chao in Central Yunnan was a Thai kingdom gained ground and with the name “Thailand” a new society of a more modern, indigenous, horizontal and national society took shape which stood in stark contrast to the old-fashioned, foreign, hierarchical, and monarchical one.

I think they should rename Thailand to LOS. Right next to LAOS.
I'm really glad they are focusing on very important issues like a name change.
Bangkok should be changed to "sit on my face". How does that translate?

Bangkok on the east bank known as Krung Thep or Phra Nakhon became a province and Thon Buri on the west bank became another province. In 1971, the two provinces were merged under the name of Nakhon Luang Krung Thon Buri or Bangkok-Thon Buri Metropolis. One year later, the form of local government in the metropolis was reorganized and the province obtained a new name as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or popularly called Krung Thep for short. The name is still used among the Thais today as always, while the foreigners know Krung Thep as Bangkok. It is noteworthy that the name "Bangkok" formerly referred to a small fishing village which later expanded into communities on both sides of the Chao Phraya River. It is so named because the village (called bang in Thai) was full of wild olive (called makok in Thai which was shortened to kok) groves, and the name has been internationally used up to now."
