Thai woman, French husband commit double suicide in Uthai Thani

A Thai woman and her French husband were found dead side-by-side in a bedroom of their house in Uthai Thani in what police believe to be double suicides.

The bodies were found after the Mueang Karung police station was alerted to check the couple’s house in Moo 6 village in Tambon Mueang Karung of Uthai Thani’s Ban Rai district on Thursday afternoon due to a strong stench emanating from inside.

The couple were identified as Saifon Guffroy and David Guffroy.

Police found the one-storey house locked from the inside and had the village head and relatives break the door open.

The bodies were found lying side-by-side beside their bed. No trace of fighting was detected. Several medicine packets were found in the room.

A handwritten suicide letter in both Thai and English signed by the couple was found on their computer desk inside the bedroom.

The letter was dated September 5. In Thai, it stated: “I decided to kill myself with Khun David, [signed by] Saifon”.
In English, it stated: "Today, I decided to die with my wife Saifon because [neither] my mother [nor] my father want to help us. David Guffroy”.

Relatives said the woman saw a psychiatrist regularly while the Frenchman had developed depression as he had no job and his passport had expired.

Very sad. Looks like a loving couple very co-dependant in their mental illnesses.

An older Frenchman and his young Thai bride committed double suicide by suspected drug overdose in Thailand’s rural Uthai Thani province.

David Guffroy, 46, and Saifon Guffroy, 26, had reportedly been married for eight years before their tragic deaths.

According to Guffroy’s suicide note, translated from French, they committed suicide because of financial problems. The note read: “My father has not sent money to Thailand for a long time — I have no money,” reported Thairath.

Saifon’s note was more ethereal, she said that they were soulmates and would be together in the next life despite their struggles. She said she would always love him.

When police went to their home, the couple appeared to have been dead for five days and there were anti-depressant pills on hand as well as a card marking a date for Saifon to visit a psychiatrist for mental illness.

Guffroy is far from the first older foreign man to suffer because he can’t support a Thai wife. A story with a similar theme was just showcased on American reality TV.

While sad in the big picture, why was he dependent on his Father to survive?

My thought also. If he were mentally ill, you’d think he would be better off going back to France where he could get help.

People with depression are not well known for making good decisions.

Looking at his online presence and his CV it looks like his business had failed and he needed help getting through a hard time. Looks like he didn't get it.

People with depression lose the ability to construct a future, for a while they may get through by fantasising about what could be, but all bets are off when this collides with reality.

Well That's a bit harsh but at 46 (time of the death) and he stated his father had not sent him money for a long time sounds like he had lots of opportunities to change this outcome.

I mean if the guy was 75 and his wife close in age and they were both ill and struggling and broke I could understand this better.

Oh well. Its life..People do strange stuff.

It's living in the west that sows the seed of illness to begin with, because life has become so hard... as populations rise, costs of everything rise, and amount of time and persistent debt one must accept to acquire them only increase; and little by little, they become unobtainable to many.

It seems a frequent story now, of men, seeking to escape to a tropical paradise with a neotonous naif young maiden to live out a blissful and exciting fantasy.
Alas, the golden days of being able rock up like C-3PO in an ewok village and live the dream are over, and it's very hard to get set up in paradise; perhaps harder than getting set up in boiler room of the west.

"desire creates suffering", as I believe a certain saffron robed dude once said. Much of the ills of the world are caused by desire, and by expectations suddenly, and sometimes, dramatically, no being met. From within the whirling maelstrom of desires, anxieties, and disappointments (DAD!), rapid exit seems very sane.

People make bad decisions - I've even recently encountered a UK-Thai couple arrived in the UK, who I sense are facing a reality check... the guy's career choices don't seem to work, and the girl believed in his "one day, you'll see" stuff; now she's late 30s and bioclock is ticking hard.

It's perhaps something to do with finding that balance between delaying gratification, and not waiting too long... it is a shame to become so isolated that you can't see any light at the end of the tunnel.

It's one cowardly act to kill ones self but to brainwash a young woman to do it with you is a terrible, terrible, selfish act. Twenty six she was. Twenty six. What a bastard.

Utter tosh. Time to start taking the prozac. Life is suffering! Tell that to the starving Africans. Life is suffering, ha, ha, ha. I'm suffering so much drinking my beer and eating my spagetti. Sh1t I got to watch a blockbuster hollywood movie next and then shag my young, tight, wifey before laying my suffering head down on my ever so soft pillow. Life's a b1tch.
