Angry rubber farmers plan rally in Bangkok on Monday over prices

Rubber farmers will rally in Bangkok next Monday to pile pressure on Agriculture Minister General Chatchai Sarikulya over what they see as his failure to adequately address falling rubber prices.

“Chatchai should take responsibility for the mistake,” Tanomkiat Yingchuan, an adviser to the network of rubber farmer groups, said yesterday.

Rubber farmers from provinces across the country will join the rally, he said. Participants would wear black during the protest and read out their statements in Bangkok.

Rubber farmer groups are upset that during Chatchai’s term as agriculture minister, the Thai Rubber Authority formed Thai Rubber Joint Venture Co Ltd in collaboration with five big rubber firms to the detriment of small-scale farmers.

“While the joint venture was supposed to help farmers in principle, it has in practice benefited investors,” Tanomkiat said.

He said his group would demand that the Thai Rubber Authority withdraw from the joint venture and strictly enforce rubber-price management rules.

Over supply equals low prices. Time for rubber farmers to try growing another crop. The old saying "Don't put your eggs all in one basket" comes to mind.

Where do you get that from, nowhere near true, I know as we are a licensed rubber buyer and processor.

Your talking gate price and TSR price [Block rubber] which is cup rubber that has been wasted, dried and pressed in to large blocks, a factory operation with all the costs, labor. electricity, machines etc.

This oversupply is an excuse more then a fact, Kerala India is the main rubber area, farmers get paid crap for their rubber, yet India is, I think number 2 in the world tire maker and is so short of rubber that they banned the felling of rubber trees,

In SEA China controls the price, state controled capitalism, they stock pile rubber and other commodities, if the price goes up they simply stop buying, they have 6 months or more of reserves and can wait until the price drops again.

The only real long term fix is for ASEAN to get into big time tire manufacturing, in competition with China, not happening.

As to farmers chopping down trees and going into other crops, most plantations are small family run and even at very low prices they get a better return than other crops like cassava and a hell of a lot less work.

I don't at the moment, prices are too unstable and low to be profitable.

Keep my buyers license and factory license paid in the hope it all picks up one day. too small to compete with the big boys.

On youtube, Sarah jane rubber factory or Collister rubber company.

Yes I /my wife has over 100 rai, and you call me wrong for saying the middle man makes plenty of cash from buying cheap from farmers and selling at a vaste profit, as do sugar cane dealers, again the farmer is screwed, you said I was wrong, so back up your statement that I was wrong.

Half the battle is being forced to do business with the controlling agricultural/horticultural racketeering mafias and just as corrupt government.
Rallies and protest, though well intended, resolve nothing.

Farming communities need to unify as a collective unit in their best interest - allowing a free and fair open direct market to flourish.
Good, bad, indifferent - at least not under the domain of what amounts to a systematic serfdom.

That's todays price. STR is TSR from Thailand, cup rubber made into block rubber, it's the FOB price, so remove the 5 Baht export tax per kilo.

Are you saying that middlemen gate buyers have some secret deal and they sell cup a over 40 odd baht a kilo, please, please tell me the name of the buyer, sure I and some others could have truck and dogs transporting 60 tons by the end of next week, have the license.

Jeff, know you write this crap all the time. know co ops get better prices, but it's about volume, local middlemen, may area who do cassava, take their cassava to a million US dollar factory in Nam Yuen, margins are in the satang area per kilo, enough cassava or rubber and you are in profit, buyers go broke yearly.

Southern rubber planters invited to army camp for talk: Govt spokesman

BANGKOK, 17 November 2017 (NNT) – Government spokesman Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the government had invited southern rubber planters to an army camp for talk.

He responded to criticisms made by a Democrat Party member that the southern rubber planters had been prevented from traveling to Bangkok to voice their persistent call for the government to solve the lowered prices of their rubber.

The government spokesman said the government had never prohibited the people from expressing their grievances and set up local mechanisms such as Damrongtham centers and heads of government agencies to receive their complaints, thus making it unnecessary for the rubber planters to come to rally in the capital city.

He called on the politician to give a constructive suggestion since, he said, both sides could work together to solve the problem and refrain from using the hardships of the rubber planters as a political tool.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has stressed the government and the NCPO is willing to gather the input from political parties and lawyers in order to form a well-rounded creative solutions without the need of rally or protest, while the invitation of rubber farmers to camp is only to hold talk for understanding, free of suppression or attack.

The government also expressed concerns over a news report that the freedom of online media in Thailand has been downgraded to the same level as that in socialist countries. He denied that the government had exercised overpowered the media.

The government spokesman said the government is expanding internet services in the country, and improving international connectivity, but there are still problems such as harassment, fraud, pornography, and contraband sales on cyberspace, all of which are yet to be regulated by law.

"Online media and users are invited to make their suggestions on how we could reform the media and improve the society without igniting the conflict or presenting distorted information which damages the credibility of the country."

Rubber Authority denies favoritism in rubber purchase

BANGKOK, 11th November 2017 (NNT) – The Rubber Authority of Thailand (RAOT) has confirmed that all rubber purchase decisions are made by a joint committee, strongly denying favoritism allegations.

RAOT Governor Teetach Suksa-ard has confirmed that each rubber purchase is overseen and approved by a joint committee appointed by five rubber exporting companies, adding that the rubber authority doesn’t favor anyone in particular, because all procedures must be carried out according to related laws and regulations.

When asked about the recently-closed rubber market in Surat Thani province, the governor said the market is being relocated to Khun Tale sub-district.

He went on to disclose that a rubber market in Songkhla has been shut down temporarily to pave the way for renovations. He said the market needs to be enlarged due to the large number of rubber traders.

The governor then asked the public to stop sharing false information and warned that doing so could exacerbate the situation.

Thailand has been hit by a rubber price slump, while growers are calling for immediate action from the government.
