A mockery of democracy in Singapore

The island state's recent presidential poll was baldly engineered in the ruling People's Action Party's favor and stirred the race-based politics it had long bid to suppress

Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) is on the political defensive following last month’s controversial presidential poll that saw one of its stalwarts win in an uncontested race.

Halimah Yacob became the country’s first female head of state following sweeping constitutional changes made to ensure that an ethnic minority Malay would become the city-state’s eighth president.

Halimah’s rise to the largely ceremonial post was ushered by an uncontested poll that resulted in a walkover when a government-appointed committee disqualified two other candidates after they failed to meet newly enacted financial criteria required for eligibility.

Billed as a measure to broaden minority representation in government, the first presidential election reserved for candidates from the Malay community has been widely derided on social media for undermining democracy and the country’s highly vaunted meritocratic principles.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, his deputies and other top PAP ministers have stridently defended the constitutional changes as a way to ensure racial harmony and strengthen Singapore’s multiracial political system.

PAP has managed and manipulated elections since 1965 when Singapore became independent. Nothing new or unusual in this case.

So if Singapore has been run by a Communist Gov they certainly have done a brilliant job down there.

See, all this bullshit talk regards Thailand needing to revert back to Democracy is simply rubbish innit.

Singapore is a parliamentary republic with a Westminster system of unicameral parliamentary government representing constituencies. The country's constitution establishes a representative democracy as the political system.[79] Executive power rests with the Cabinet of Singapore, led by the Prime Minister and, to a much lesser extent, the President.[54] The President is elected through a popular vote, and has veto powers over a specific set of executive decisions, such as the use of the national reserves and the appointment of judges, but otherwise occupies a largely ceremonial post.[80]
The Parliament serves as the legislative branch of the government.[54]Members of Parliament (MPs) consist of elected, non-constituency and nominated members. Elected MPs are voted into the Parliament on a "first-past-the-post" (plurality) basis and represent either single-member or group representation constituencies.[81] The People's Action Party has won control of Parliament with large majorities in every election since self-governance was secured in 1959.[82]

Democracy [whatever the fuck that is].

Manifest itself in a variety of forms and accepted perspectives/ideals.
    Absolutes?
    Probably not.

At least they don't have the military performing a coup every time the wrong parliament gets arrested.

Their politicians also seem to do a much better job of looking after the "ordinary" citizens wellbeing than any other nearby country.

Anybody who has been to Singapore will say the Government is doing a much better job of looking after their people than so many other Asian shit holes.

People have health care, social security and a flat to live in.

Ask the residents of Thailand , Philippines or Indonesia what they think about the Singapore Gov.

Ask any country and all would reply positively. Always going to have criticism such as in the OP because it's true but Lee Sr. and his PAP transformed what back in the day was by any measure a lost cause.

Might be time to loosen up some politically but no denying the system has worked well so far.

The Govt is a one man band and will be for a long time to come but i do like how they give graffiti vandals a good whipping so they end up with a tag on their own skin.

Not even reading the original post or replies, just responding to the headline.
Since when has Singapore pretended to be a democracy.
