Man arrested with 26 iPhone smart phones at airport

An Australian man was arrested at Suvarnabhumi international airport on Sunday as he tried to smuggle 26 iPhone X smart phones worth an estimated one million baht into the country.

The Australian, identified as Ho Won Harvard Lee, who claimed to be a music producer in Australia reportedly said that he intended to sell the smart phones in Singapore.

He claimed that he was not aware that he had to declare the phones with customs officials for tax assessment and payment because he was awaiting to connect a flight to Singapore.

Customs officials however filed a charge of violating the Telecommunications Act and an announcement of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission.

Good luck with that. Smuggling, even (or especially) in-transit smuggling, may not be covered by Telecommuncations acts.

Remind me why goods carried in transit are liable for customs duty in the country through which they are being carried?

I mean it's not as if they are being imported, so how can they........

    Oh.

July 2017: Flying to Siem Reap through Bangkok, connect to transfer by going up the escalator straight to the gate without clearing immigration or customs.

August 2017: Flying to Vientiane through Bangkok, told I am not allowed up the escalator and have to clear immigration and customs and check in for my connecting flight, even though I don't want to.

Now we know why. There is money to be made....

CASE CLOSED, Detective Dill nails it again

Ho, carrying two suitcases, was about to leave to the arrival lounge at the Suvarnabhumi Airport through the “nothing to declare” aisle when officials noticed his suspicious behaviour.

They asked to X-ray Ho’s suitcases and saw the 26 mobile phones inside, finding the phones when they opened the suitcases.
Ho said he bought the phones in Australia and intended to sell them to friends in Singapore. He was on his way to Singapore and transiting through Bangkok when he was arrested.

Yeah, but why is it a crime under the Telecoms Act and not the Customs Act?

And well spotted Dill on the Craigslist.

    Bigger fine?

The officials said the iPhone series 8 had not yet received permission to be sold or used in Thailand, so possession of the device was against the law.

I knew a guy in the '70's who smuggled a suitcase full of watches into Nepal. The fix was in at Customs, but his guy was in the toilet when he went through. Two years in a Nepalese jail.
