Nigerian and Thai wife arrested for armed robbery of a Russian woman

Phuket police have arrested a Nigerian man and his Thai wife for allegedly robbing and shooting a Russian woman in Muang Phuket district.

Both were also accused in other theft cases in the houses of foreigners in Phuket.

The Nigerian man was identified as Chijioke James Chukwunweike, 27, and his Thai wife Sasipha Nakonthaisong.

They were apprehended by police on Thursday night (Aug 31) at their rented home in Tambon Rawai.

Both were charged for breaking into the rented house of Mrs Elena Kharenko, 51, on Wednesday night as she was sleeping. But she woke up and shouted for help, and was shot.

Both escaped with her safe, while she was rushed to hospital for treatment of shot wound.

Police said the search of the Nigerian’s rented home produced lot of valuables believed to have been stolen, including gold necklaces, computer notebooks, a Louis Vuitton handbag and luxury watches.

But the Nigerian man denied robbing or attacking the Russian woman.

However police said all the stolen valuables are evidence to charge them for robbery and attempted murder of the Russian woman.

The Labour Ministry plans to launch a screening process to catch Africans who are working illegally in Thailand with only a tourist visa.

Department of Employment Director-General Waranon Pitiwan said on Friday that the move was in response to many reported cases of Africans with tourist visas being caught trading jewellery, particularly in Chanthaburi.

Going back to 1999 I used to drink in the Bamboo bar on Suk soi 3 in Bangkok, now on the other side of the road and the sois behind it is where all the Africans used to congregate doing their thing and on the odd occasion the cops would turn up mob handed and cart a load of them off but speaking to the Thai coppers who used to come in the bar they didn't like doing it due to none of the fuckers having any ID documents and wouldn't admit to where they came from hence nowhere to deport them to so was more hassle than it was worth and they only did it when ordered to from the powers that be. Maybe 18 years on times have changed.
