Police defend good Samaritan in fatal pursuit of two robbery suspects

    Apichart

A city police chief said yesterday that it was impossible that a 57-year-old good Samaritan had “thrown” two young suspects off a U-turn overpass in Bangkhuntien district, responding to social media comments that purported to describe the violent act.

Pol Maj-General Samrit Tongtao quoted witnesses as saying the suspects – Borisut Sukpia, 22 and Weerapong Nethibutr, 20 – attempted to escape after allegedly trying to snatch a necklace from a man, when the 57-year-old Apichart Un chased the suspects on his motorbike. Samrit described the following events on Tuesday, when both young men fell from the overpass, causing the death of one of them, as an “accident”.

“How can Apichart, who is nearly 60 years old, throw the young suspects off the overpass? It was an accident, we believe,” Samrit said.

Both suspects were injured and Borisut later died in hospital. Their friends subsequently wrote on Facebook that Apichart had caught them and thrown both of them off the overpass. Thawatchai Toh-aramkul, 61, the victim of the attempted robbery, told police he was on his way home from a market on his motorcycle when the suspects grabbed at his gold necklace but failed to snatch it as it fell inside his shirt.

And if it wasn't an accident justice was served. They will never rob again.

You would think the friends of two thieves would keep a low profile, but no. They have the gall to complain some wrong was done by the victim.

^, ^^Hang on a minute, both of you. Death for attempted robbery of a necklace?
A bit harsh, even for Thailand.
Witnesses saw what happened but the cop chief dismisses the accounts. Reading between the lines, the witnesses (or some of them) were friends of the dead guy, but that doesn't mean it's not true.
Murder is murder, including vigilante justice.

He didn't shoot them, at best (or at worth) he provoked an accident that eventually caused death...they could have fell on the overpass instead, I believe he wasn't expecting them to fall to the ground.

A man was beaten, and burned alive in Bekasi, after being accused of stealing Mosque speakers.

There is one thing that is clear to me is the barricade the thieves fell over is not high enough in fact a death trap as proven.

Should the police not be more concerned about this?

To be fair, that barricade looks well above a person's center of gravity (unlike condo balconies, apparently) unless Thai Bronson is exceptionally short.

Now that you brought it up, it looks more likely the thieves were tossed over. Bronson does look quite wiry and used to manual labour.

Precisely, he was expecting the natural laws of gravity to be suspended and for them merely to waft their way to paradise.
