Two Chinese nationals have been arrested on theft charges for stealing a Japanese man’s credit card and using it on a shopping spree worth over 800,000 baht.
The arrest of the two Chinese, 50-year old Yang Mofeng and 36-year old Jia Xiaodong, was revealed on Monday by Mr Kittipong Kittikachorn, director for security of Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Pol Maj-Gen Thamnoon Traitippayong, commander of Samut Prakan provincial police.
The thieves were reported to police at the airport at about 8 p.m. on June 29 by Mr Takashi Okazawa when he received a text message on his smart phone that his credit card had been used in three shopping totalling 803,000 baht while he was still at the airport’s arrival hall building waiting for the arrival of a friend, said Mr Kittipong.
It was that time that Mr Okazawa realized that his wallet was missing from his baggage.
After having received the complaint, airport security officials quickly examined video footages from surveillance cameras along the walking route of the Japanese. They found a footage showing two Chinese-looking men approaching their victim as he stepped on the escalator after alighting from Airport Link train. Then the two men rushed out of the terminal building to hail a taxi.
With the help of tourist police, Samut Prakan police traced the credit card spending to Central Embassy shopping mall. Checks of VDO footages found two men using the stolen credit card with matching description to the men seen at the airport.
The two Chinese were later tracked down at a hotel in China Town area. Shoes and two wallets bought with Mr Okazawa’s credit card were found in the hotel room with the other items already sent home in China.
