Chinese passenger throws coins into plane engine for luck

A superstitious passenger delayed a flight from Shanghai for several hours on Tuesday after throwing coins at the plane's engine for good luck, Chinese officials said.

The elderly woman was detained by police at Shanghai Pudong International Airport following the bizarre incident, forcing nearly 150 passengers to be evacuated from the plane bound for Guangzhou in southern China.

The 80-year-old threw nine coins at an engine of China Southern Airlines flight CZ380 as she was boarding on the tarmac.

Eight of the coins missed their target but one nestled inside an engine, airport police said, adding that a passenger spotted her and reported it to authorities.

The elderly woman was travelling with her husband, daughter and son-in-law, Beijing Youth Daily said.

"A senior passenger threw coins to the plane's engine and delayed the flight. The passenger involved has been taken away by police," China Southern Airlines said in a statement on its Twitter-like Weibo account.

"In order to make sure the flight is safe, China Southern maintenance has conducted a full exam of the plane's engine."

The incident was soon trending on Weibo and police added in a statement: "After investigation the involved passenger surnamed Qiu said she threw the coins to pray for safety. According to Qiu's neighbour, Qiu believes in Buddhism.

"The plane is boarding again for takeoff."

Hundreds of thousands of Weibo users had a field day, with one commenting sarcastically: "Grandma, this is not a wish fountain with turtles."

Good old Granny...(fookin' bitch terrorist , right Terry).
Understanding she meant well but fortunately another passenger reported what could have been the cause of a serious mechanical failure or worse once the engine powered up.

Next time let Granny take the train...not much she can mess up there, eh.

She should try the new modern tradition of spitting into things. Every documentary on China I've seen recently have people spitting everywhere all the time. Has anyone been to China and witnessed this spitting trend?
Love to know if this is the norm over there.

The few places I have been in China, it wasn't an uncommon practice. I remember myself and a colleague having dinner with the owner of a manufacturing company and his extended family. Right in the middle of this huge banquet he started clearing his throat as if something was stuck on the back of his neck. I remember commenting to my colleague to remind me not to bring him home for dinner to meet Mother. Put me clean off the blind white shrimps squirming around on the plate. Pretty well lived on rice for the rest of the trip. The Chinese food you get in a restaurant in the west is nothing like a lot of the shite they eat in China, apart from the fact everybody is sticking a set of saliva soaked chopsticks in the same bowl.

I lived in a Chinese tower block. Every morning at 5am everybody would start gargling and gobbing at the same time. The whole building would vibrate as they all cleared their throats and spat in unison. It was deafening. Better than any alarm clock. Not only do they shamelessly gob everywhere and anywhere they're incredibly noisy about doing it.

    It happens EVERYWHERE, by EVERYONE.

I've been walking down a street, seen a pretty girl approaching (8/10er), then hock up and spit a massive green projectile onto the sidewalk. She immediately went back down to a 1/10.

Coins thrown into plane engine - Good Luck with that!

Coins thrown into plane engine by elderly lady for good luck cause delay in China
An elderly woman has delayed a plane for more than five hours, after she attempted to throw a handful of coins into its engine for good luck.

The passenger was boarding China Southern Airlines flight CZ380, from Shanghai to Guangzhou, when she threw nine coins
    towards the plane's jet engine.

The coin toss was quickly noticed by a fellow passenger, who was able to alert authorities before take-off.
The coins, worth about 1.7 yuan altogether, caused 150 passengers to evacuate as the airline conducted a full inspection of the plane's engine.

Police were called to Shanghai Pudong International Airport and the elderly passenger, who had been travelling with her husband,
daughter and son-in-law, was taken away for questioning.

They later confirmed the passenger, surnamed Qiu, had thrown the coins "to pray for safety" and they had been informed by a
neighbour that she "believes in Buddhism".

The plane was finally able to take off safely at 5:52pm local time (7:52pm AEST), more than five hours late.

China Southern Airlines reminded all passengers to comply with civil aviation laws in a post on social media site Weibo,
and to avoid any behaviour that could jeopardise the safety of their fellow passengers.

    GRANNY !

^ Mate, looked back a number of days and can't see it as a news item in the Thailand/Asia News.

But Mods, if it's existing, please merge it.

I can't remember what section it was in but it attracted a lot of Chinese comments, one of the best being that it's surprise that they didn't shit and piss in the engine bay.
