Bottle cap seals to be eliminated in one year

BANGKOK, 10 June 2017 (NNT) – Thailand plans to eliminate cap seals on all types of beverage bottles in one year to reduce 520 tons of plastic waste yearly, said Pollution Control Department (PCD) Director-General Jatuporn Buruspat.

The agency is cooperating with bottle manufacturers to encourage them to stop placing cap seals on their plastic water bottles with the aim at freeing Thailand of cap seals in a year.

He said the quality of drinking water will not be compromised without the cap seals as the current regulations of the Food and Drugs Administration only require for the caps to be tightly closed. The elimination of cap seals will help the country reduce the amount of plastic waste by 520 tons in a year.

Thailand produces 7,000 million bottles each year, with 2,600 million having plastic caps with a combined length of 260,000 kilometers, or 6.5 times the globe's circumference. Waste of plastic caps causes negative effects to environment as the lightweight plastic pieces are easy to spread all over on land and seas, making it difficult to collect and recycle and causing blockades in pipes and some might be eaten by marine animals.

The PCD chief added the PCD and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration plan to open more dumping sites for toxic waste to all areas in the city, given proper waste management. The dumping sites will be provided at shopping malls, schools and gas stations.

I always buy namthip. Owned by Coca Cola unfortunately but no plastic seal so easier to open and more environmentally friendly.

Maybe making their tap water drinkable might be better. They could partly finance it with a small tax on bottled water. They could also reduce waste by using more glass bottles and a refundable bottle deposit.

The seals are for security and customer confidence.
It's such an insignificantly tiny bit of plastic compared to the bottle itself, that I wonder why they bother eliminating it.
My cynical guess is whoever came up with this idea has a water bottling factory and the sealing machine needs replacing.

Unlike the bottle it wont get recycled.

Unlike the bottle it often ends up on the floor.

I think it's highly indicative of how backward corrupt and superficial the place is that these seals are expected.

    All top points.
It can't be that hard to implement.
I believe that when the water leaves the treatment plant that it is potable. The problem is the pipes and that the water, although potable, is still not of a high enough quality.

Most people use local water reverse osmosis filters, which is fine.

Most Thai tap water is drinkable, at least it is before it gets near the house. The problem is usually with leaky pipes and low water pressure allowing contaminants into the pipes. Did you know Bangkok has an online link to its water quality monitoring stations showing the quality of the water at each one? Bangkok Water Quality Map

    Only one problem with dat.

Ya well know that if the Gov ever come out and told ya the water is drinkable only the deluded and mentally unstable would believe them.

Sort of a good way to control population explosion I suppose.

Tell every coonta that the water is drinkable.

...in spite of all of the truly huge environmental problems facing swamp dwellers, local bureaucrats have taken a brave and forward-thinking stand on the least significant aspect of plastic pollution. It is no surprise that some folks might immediately look at who benefits from this proposed regulation as that's how the "system" (such as it is) works in Thailand 4.0...

This I think is what the article is about. The plastic seal over the bottle cap will be stopped.

Yes the plastic that says "We know you can't trust anyone in this country so here's a bit of plastic to show you can trust us not to kill you"

Coca Cola's image doesn't require it, on coke or namthip, and they have a perfectly good sealing system that isn't garish and wasteful.

Think how much could be saved by eliminating the wraparound labels on water bottles?

These wrap around labels are not recycled. Just left in piles in the suburbs.

The main problem is the existing bottle caps, after initial opening and separation of the tamper proof ring from the main cap, can be closed again offering no visual evidence that the bottle had been opened.

Maanaam is correct in saying the outer seal film is put on because the caps are not tamper evident.

I am developing a new double barrier cap with a different tamper evident seal that clearly splits upon initial opening providing absolute tamper evidence.

The double barrier I hope will eliminate the need for hermetic seals and o'rings to maintain product freshness and air tight seal.

This cap, and if I get it right may be used 100's of times over without destroying the seal. It may also be used for carbonated beverages.

Garish? You object to these seals on the grounds that they offend your aesthetic sensibilities? You, Sir, are a J.K. Huysmanns character and I demand my jewelled tortoise and scent harmonica!
No longer was it merely the bottle seal who extorts a cry of lust and concupiscence from an old man by the lascivious contortions of its garishness; who breaks the will, masters the mind of a King by the spectacle of its quivering plastic bosoms, heaving belly and tossing thighs; it was now revealed in a sense as the symbolic incarnation of world-old Vice, the bottle-cap of immortal Hysteria, the Curse of Beauty supreme above all other beauties by the cataleptic spasm that stirs its garish plastic covering and steels its muscles, - a monstrous Beast of the Apocalypse, indifferent, irresponsible, insensible, poisoning, sealing.

Namthip bottles are pressurised so there's an audible and sensual warning. It's not rocket science.

    I hope so too mate.

I am also looking at adding other things to this cap to increase shelf life and to eliminate degradation of the packaged product.

The trick is to make the caps valuable purely because of performance so people will not throw them away but continue to use them.

You get turned on by this? My previous post was even more accurate than I thought.
