Thailand ‘among top 20 most dangerous countries’ to visit

THAILAND HAS been ranked as one of the 20 most dangerous countries in the world for tourists, with high rates of crime and violence and low reliability of police services, according to a recent survey.

Of the 136 countries around the world covered by the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report, which was released last month, Thailand sits at 118th with a 4.0 score for safety and security for tourists.

The index indicates a country’s exposure of tourists and businesses to security risks, considering serious harm such as violence and terrorism.

While a score of seven is considered the best for visitors, Finland is ranked No 1 with a score of 6.7, while Colombia, regarded as the most dangerous country for travellers, is the lowest with a score of 2.6.

Among Asean countries, the Philippines is the most dangerous, placed 126th with a score of 3.6, and Singapore is at the top (6th and 6.5).

^ I know what you mean.. but how about on the road (do you drive?)..

I think they just divide the number of tourists by deaths, in their comparison.

Finland and Singapore are two places I will probably never visit: no interest in reindeer or boat-topped buildings...give me the jewellry and jet-ski scams, the tackiest bars, the dissolute clientele in after-hour clubs, the 24-hour parade of inebriated, nearly incapacitated tourists and locals, the come-hither sensation of neon explosions, the exhaust-pipe soot, the mire, the torpor and the heat...that's a vacation...

Oh yeah the road is different. For sure that's unsafe (even though I have hundreds of hours on the roads with no problems, it only takes one idiot to do something stupid).

But this report was talking about being a victim of crime so that kind of surprised me

also surprised, I imagine, were the tourists buying inexplicably cheap diamonds and rubies, charged for non-existent jet ski damage, waking up drugged and assetless in a hotel room, stranded at airports with worthless tickets...etc...local predators are spoiled for choice when it comes to naive prey...

Yeah I didn't really think about the stupid scams. They are so easy to avoid its almost hard to think of those people as victims. The scratch on a motorbike/jet ski thing is a bit of an exception

Must be doing it wrong then.

Several times Ive felt unsafe. One particularly memorable incident involved a police officer who caught me dropping a cig butt into a street drain on lower Sukhumvit & tried to arm drag me down an alley instead of to the police box for god knows what. He did not like my refusal to go with him alone down an alleyway.

Lets just say ill never ride a bus here again after several instances where I literally thought we were going to smash headfirst into oncoming traffic because of their desire to get in the oncoming lane to pass with zero fucks given to cars/trucks/motorbikes barreling straight at us.

Another time, in band camp, I was sitting with my buddy drinking real late in rural Thailand and this Thai dude (in the middle of the night) came walking by pushing one of those bicycle wheeled push carts all shady like. Stopped on the side of the road & started digging a hole & put some heavy looking plastic bags in said hole. Me, my buddy, and his wife were all WTF. She tried to call the cops, on the phone, at guess what? Literally nobody answered the phone. All night nobody would answer the phone. The 191 & 911 no answer and the local police station no answer. After days, and the whole area starting to smell like a rotten corpse, the police finally came (after going to the police station & begging) and dug it all up to find a chopped up pig.

Thailand is a fucked up country make no mistake. At least in Englewood hoods in the US you can call fucking 911.

That said I've felt more unsafe in Manila.

If these tourists would just stop jumping off buildings, crashing their rented motorbikes and jet skis and drowning themselves things would improve.

Oh and buses are the safest form of road transport in this country with less than 1% of fatalities involving buses.

That's scary, I agree. I actually did have a weird incident with a border patrol agent who approached me in a restaurant and started asking where I was staying, whether I used drugs, and other super weird stuff. I was with my wife and we are both clean cut and don't at all look the part of people you would just walk up to and ask those questions without some weird intent. The guy was super aggressive, really angry and hostile. We got up and paid our bill and left, looking behind us the whole ride back to our room. We actually left town as soon as we got back to our hotel since he knew where we were staying at that point. We should have lied about it but he was saying he would call and check if we lied. On our way out, the owner said he had received a call about us from the officer just before we arrived back. We booked it the hell out of town. That was pretty sketch.

Oh and we almost got killed by a pack of wild dogs, plus I nearly drowned in an under water cave another time. So....yeah

Where else do you guys drive? Driving is the most dangerous thing humans do ANYWHERE. Neighboring places like Indonesia, Cambodia , Vietnam etc are no different.

Only 2 fears here in Thailand. First the roads and second Yabba taking zombies that would kill you as soon as look at you. I don't know how things are regarding Yabba in a built up environment but here in the sticks they all seem to be on it. That's just the men. Many women are on that 'Bangkok Pill' and that is supposed to send them doolally. You have to have eyes up yer ass these days.

To be honest, Singapore would probably be worth trying. Great place. Best food in SEA without question - everything from street food to Michelin starred restaurants (and two Michelin starred hawker stalls!).

    Great nightlife, clean, green, comfortable.

    (albeit somewhat expensive)

A total beat up i reckon and false news by news plebs who must fire a story in.

There is one very dangerous thing about Thailand though,

That is the chance of being splashed by the acidic contents of some crusty old Dodgers shit bag when it ruptures.

    Yes,

I see any old cont walking towards me with a bulge near his belt and I'm out of there.
