More than 1000 Thai holidaymakers left stranded by scam

The traditional Thai New Year's holiday has turned out to be anything but fun for more than 1 000 would-be travellers who were stranded at Bangkok's international airport after their cut-rate tour packages to Japan turned out to be an apparent scam.

Police said hundreds of people lodged complaints after finding themselves at Suvarnabhumi Airport with no flight to board. They said they had booked six-day tour packages with WealthEver, better known as a multi-level marketing company.

Would-be travellers told Thai television interviewers that they paid about $280 for a package including airfare and accommodation. One way-fare from Bangkok to Tokyo alone typically costs more than $400.

Thai media reported that WealthEver boss Pasit Arinchalapit was detained by police in Ranong, a border province, on Wednesday.

Police ponder lese majeste charge against Sinsae Shugun

Police are considering filing lese majeste charge against the fraudster who allegedly cheated about 2,000 people who bought package tour to Japan during Songkran festival from her phoney company, WealthEver, and were stranded at Suvarnabhumi international airport on Tuesday night.

Pol Lt-Gen Thitirath Nongharnpitak, commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, said Wednesday that the suspect, Ms Pasit Arinlapit, alias Sinsae Shogun, managing director of WealthEver, claimed that a special person from the Palace preside over an event for her direct sale company.

He said police were pondering whether such remark by Ms Pasit might constitute a lese majeste or not.

Ms Pasit was arrested by police in Ranong on Wednesday and immediately flown to Bangkok and then whisked to the Crime Suppression Division for questioning.

She was detained by an order issued by the National Council for Peace and Order under Section 44 of the interim constitution.

CSD police have so far questioned 700 victims of the package tour cheat by WealthEver which, according to police, is legally non-existent because it was not registered as a direct sale company nor as a tour company.

Ms Pasit herself has changed names and surnames more than ten times. There are six fraud cases pending against her and three arrest warrants have been slapped against her.

Two things strike me as interesting in this case.

Firstly, despite her changing her name many times and their being six fraud cases and three arrest warrants outstanding, she was allowed to continue operating. Then suddenly she is arrested in Ranong and flown by helicopter back to Bangkok. Wow, I commend the belatedly swift efforts by the police, but wonder just what it was that got the necessary wheels turning so vigourously.

Secondly, is that cases like this seem to becoming more common and show that the Thai Rak Thai myth is just that, a myth. The internet has given Thais the ability to scam their fellow citizens safely, at a distance and en masse, something that in the past had to be done at a far more dangerous and personal level and thus was only really safe when practiced on hapless and helpless foreigners.

1: Is it a man or a woma?
2: 4,355 years imprisonment? How the fuck does that work other than make the judicial system look stupid?

However, according to the law, Pasist will serve 20 years in prison and pay a 20,000 baht fine. His multi-level marketing firm Wealth Ever was fined 435 million baht.

Guinness World Records 2006: World's longest sentence for corporate fraud is 141,675 years (1989), and the honours go to none other than Thailand.

Chamoy Thipyaso defrauded more than 16,000 Thais in a pyramid scheme worth $204 million at the time. However, Thai law of the time specified that those convicted of fraud could not serve more than twenty years in prison, and she was released after eight years.

Thai law may have changed since then, as it does, though GWR do not suggest money may have found new owners.
