    Two new public holidays and one scrapped

    The cabinet on Tuesday approved two new annual public holidays commemorating royal events, and cancelled another. The new public holidays are:

    July 28 - His Majesty the King's birthday;

    Oct 13 - The passing of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX).

    Colonel Taksada Sangkhachan, assistant government spokeswoman said the cabinet also resolved to scrap Coronation day, May 5, as a public holiday.

    I have tried my best to find out if the holiday scheduled for May 5 this year has definitely been cancelled. As you would expect I had fuck all sense from the Thai Embassy in London. So, I telephoned four consulates in the UK without being able to talk to anybody and eventually spoke to consulate officials in New York and Chicago. They didn't know what was going on but both were nicer than the guy in the embassy.

    Can somebody please find out if public offices will be open on May 5 this year, please ?

    Isn't that only for religious holidays? Only guessing, don't go to them.

    Every day is a holiday for me. It's just that on some days everyone else is as well, they tend to be the days when I stay at home.

    In theory, perhaps. Not in practice.

    The very nature of these special enacted holidays would surely suggest that a notarized clause restricting the sale of alcohol or intoxicated display would be forthcoming.

    Any surface restrictions have never stopped the Thais from selling or imbibing.
    Good luck to the authorities to try to enforce such inane mandates - especially upcountry.
