Belgian man falls to death from hotel rooftop

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN -- A Belgian businessman fell from the rooftop of an eight-storey hotel in the seaside district of Hua Hin and died of his injuries in hospital early on Monday, police said.

Pol Col Sithichai Srisophacharoenrat, the Hua Hin police chief, led a team of police to the hotel in the heart of Hua Hin shortly after midnight on being informed that a Belgian man was on the verge of committing suicide.

When they arrived the 31-year-old man was sitting by the railing on the roof's edge with his legs hanging down on the outside. A small crowd had gathered in front of the hotel, Pol Lt Pornchanok Lert-awas, duty officer at Hua Hin station, said.

Rescue workers from a charity foundation and Hua Hin Municipality laid air cushions on the ground in front of the hotel.

The police tried to talk to the man and calm him down, but he kept yelling and would not allow anyone to get near him.

After about two hours the man looked exhausted and kept biting his fingernails. Suddenly, he rose up, launched himself over the railing and plunged to the ground in front of the hotel, Pol Lt Pornchanok said.

He was rushed to Hua Hin Hospital, but was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

Pol Sithichai said the Belgian and his friends jointly invested in a restaurant in Hua Hin township. The business lately ran into financial problems. He also bought a house which cost several million baht, but had a problem with the transfer of ownership to his name.

Witnesses told the police that the man came to the hotel in a Toyota Fortuner. He went into the hotel and traight up to the rooptop.

His body was sent to the police Institute of Forensice Medicine for examination.

    Relatives were being informed.

A Belgian real estate developer jumped to his death from the roof of a seven-storey hotel in Hua Hin on Saturday night, police said.

The man died despite authorities placing a large airbag on the ground as police attempted to negotiate with him. When he jumped from the roof of the Hisea Huahin Hotel he missed the airbag by about three metres.

He died later in Hua Hin Hospital.

Police were alerted at 8.30pm that the man appeared suicidal on the rooftop of the hotel. Tourist police and Hua Hin police rushed to the scene and tried to negotiate with the man to step back from the edge of the roof.

Police said the man had an argument with a woman who owned an accountancy firm on Soi Hua Hin 41. Police said he apparently had stabbed her with a bamboo stick, slightly injuring her, after the company refused to return his passport.

Police said the man had been involved in a real estate and a restaurant in Hua Hin for about a year.

    RIP.

A reminder to never believe anyone in a business deal, especially in Thailand, unless all documentation and guarantees are 'copper fastened' down.

Has anyone kept track of how many foreigners have either fell or jumped to their death here in Thailand so far this year? I would bet is an interesting statistic.

I'm scared of heights and get nose bleeds if I go above the third floor so it isn't going to happen to me.

Would a woman somehow be involved do you think?

Wonder who gets to drive this off.

    No sympathy whatsoever.

Someone on another thread talked about how they wished they had moved to LOS in their early 30s. Do you really?

When reading of all these balcony flying club members, and what eventually tips the scales for them, I put it down to the crap alcohol available in Thailand

89% of foreigners dying in Thailand are male, apparently.

Road accidents, drowning, suicides, falling - in that order are the top four causes.

I heard that he was in an incident with a knife prior to getting on the roof. Anyone heard the same?

    Hell, that's a wake-up call.

Do you have any idea how many of those road accident deaths involve buses/coaches/passenger vans?

You say this pretty much every time there is a story like this.

I'm not sure which is more odd: that you feel the need to say it (it's pretty clear you are as empathetic as a dishcloth) or that you think anyone cares.

Either way, thank christ you didn't have the self discipline to finish that counselling course, eh?

it was an assault with a luuk chin stick, one of those little bamboo skewers that the food carts use for their meatballs or fishballs.

it was not a "stabbing" in the frenzied blood spraying sense.

What's this got to do with the Belgian throwing himself off?
