    South ravaged by floodings

The southern provinces down from Champhon to Ranong and Narathiwat in the deep south are still hard hit by heavy to very heavy rains and subsequent floodings and flashfloods with most village roads and sections of main highways impassable for all vehicles.

Hardest hit today is reported in Champhon with all roads in Lang Suan district under deep water and all schools closed.

Road from Champhon to Ranong is also under deep water and impassable for all vehicles.

Landslides were reported on the roads and highway officials warned motorists of unsafe passage.

Authorities in Ranong also asked all small boats to remain at piers as the sea is turbulent and high waves of up to four metres could pose danger for sailing.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat, one car was washed away by flashfloods as driver tried to wade through a flashflood passing a road in Thung Song district.

The car sank into deep water.

It was not immediately known how many people were in the car.

Authorities said that in Nakhon Si Thammarat, continuous rainfalls triggered forest run-off, causing flood in three districts. Many roads have been under water as deep as almost a metre deep.

In Phraprom district, roads outside Ramkhamhaeng University, Nakhon Si Thammarat were submerged.

A bridge was damaged in Ron Phiboon district, leaving villagers stranded in their houses.

Flooding forced southern line trains to stop its service at Thung Song junction stations. People wade through the strong flood current with the help of a rope.

Buses have been provided to train passengers to further travel to their destinations.

In Trang, flooding has extended in six districts while rainfalls continue in Huayyod district. One traffic lane of bypass road has been closed due to flooding.

The government center and other government offices in Ratsada district have been inundated while about 300 houses are under almost one meter of water. This round of flood is more severe than the previous one in December last year. The province declared two districts disaster zones.

In Yala, the flood situation is worrying. The Saiburi River has risen rapidly while about 6,000 people have been affected by the current flood, which is as high as two meters. Villagers travel by flat-bottomed boat. In Raman district and Muang district, 12 schools have closed indefinitely.

My brothers girl lives in Thung song and she has lost everything. The house is completely underwater, she didn't have time to save anything. Even struggling to find food.

But as usual there will be a short statement from the army and fuck all else will be done.

I arrived back in the UK last night after a month on Koh Phayam, Ranong.
After 28 days on the island, we had one day of `all-day` sunshine, which was christmas day and about half-a-dozen times, when the sun shone briefly. On and off rain for about 10 days, the rest of the time was `overcast`,but hot.
It did not `spoil` my holiday, but we had `no` flooding.

Southern flood situation upgraded into Level 3 Public Disaster

Exercising his authority as commander of the National of Public Disasters Prevention and Mitigation Command, General Anupong announced the setup of forward commands in Surat Thani and Songkhla to coordinate relief efforts of all governmental agencies to help flood victims.

Interior deputy permanent secretary Prayoon Rattanaseni was appointed to be in charge of the two forward commands.

At the Narathiwat provincial hall, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha who was on a inspection tour of flooding situation told the people that he had never abandoned southern people while praising their strong will in struggling against natural disasters.

He said he understood their hardships because he used to experience hardships before when he served as the army commander-in-chief. He added that it didn’t matter he would visit southern people or not because he believes that he can serve the people wherever he is.

The prime minister also appealed to southern people not to oppose power plant projects in the South, pointing out that Thailand will experience power shortage in the future if new power plants are not built to increase power reserves.

Troops sent to help southern flood victims as Nakhon Si Thammarat airport closed for 2 more days

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has ordered troops to be sent to southern provinces to help flood victims, Army spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvaree disclosed on Saturday.
About 4,000 troops, 122 trucks and 26 flat-bottomed boat have been dispatched to flood-hit provinces together with two medic teams and two mobile kitchens which will prepare food for distribution to the hungry flood victims who may not be able to cook themselves or to buy food because of the flooding.

The troops will help move belongings of flood victims to higher grounds or safer places, to direct traffic in the flood-affected areas, to set up floodwalls, to get rid of rubbles or obstacles which may block roads, to distribute food to the needy and to provide medical care, said Colonel Winthai.

Army Commander-in-Chief General Chalermchai Sitthisart said that the army engineering corp was on standby with mechanical equipment and flat-bottomed boats to be sent to the flooded areas upon the first notice.

Meanwhile, the Airports Department announced the extension of the closure of Nakhon Si Thammarat airport for another two days on January 8-9 on top of January 6-7 because of the rising level of flood water on the runway.

The department has coordinated with airlines to assist passengers and to inform them of flight changes.

In the meantime, airlines have increased four additional flights between Surat Thani and Don Mueang airport at Surat Thani airport on January 7-10 to accommodate passenger from Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Floods spread to Ranong as more rains are expected

Flood water has now spread to Ranong, bringing total southern provinces now stricken by floods to 10.
Although floods in many urban areas in towns have receded with business slowly returning, but in most suburban areas the situation remains critical.

Nakhon Si Thammarat airport remained closed today as flood water still submeges its runway.

The flood level at the runway rose higher today from yesterday, prompting airport authorities to watch the water closely before making announcement of any change on a daily basis.

It could not say exactly when to open the airport again.

Trains from Bangkok to the South could travel only to Chumphon station as several sections of the rail lines are still submerged.

The State Railways of Thailand said no bus transportation to other destinations will be provided after the trains reach Chumphon.

Asia 41 highway is reported to be passabke for all vehicles this morning as flood water has receded.

Meanwhile flood situation in Lang Suan district of Chumphon has eased this morning with flood water in the town completely receded.

Townspeople are cleaning their houses and shops.

But authorities still warn people to prepare as more rains are expected as new round of flash flood could be possible.

Ranong became the latest southern provinces to be hit by flood today due to heavy rains.

Overall flood situation in the southern region remains critical, particularly in Phatthalung, Narathwat, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Chumphon where many areas are still cut off by floods

In Chumphon four districts are still submerged.

Yesterday Lang Suan district was hard-hit after forest runoff flooded government offices and hospital in municipal area in two metres high of floodwater.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Cha-uat district, it was still facing critical flood situation as the Cha-uat district municipality market was under more than two metres high of floodwater.

The strong tide of the floodwater has damaged a bridge on Ban Tul- Cha-uat road. The military have deployed the soldiers to build the temporary bridge for the villagers to travel.

In Trang, almost 3,000 households along the both sides of the Trang river bank urgently moved their belongings into higher ground.

In Phatthalung, the inundation has widened particularly in the provincial seat, Khuan Khanun and Pa Phayom which were severely affected from the heavy rain.

The flood has caused the economic area in the provincial seat, the government offices, hospital under almost two metres of floodwater. The authorities have helped the villagers to evacuate into the safe place.

In Surat Thani, flood situation has relatively eased and authorities are assessing flood damages in order to give assistance to affected people.

A landslide had blocked the road and cut off more than 130 households from outside world for three days. More than 100,000 chicken in the farms were killed by the flood and sending the smell of rotten chicken around the area. Authorities have to help bury the dead chicken to prevent the disease.

Tourists Stranded in Koh Samui as Flooding Causes Flight Cancellations

SUARAT THANI – Heavy rains and flood conditions have been wreaking havoc over many parts of Thailand. Yesterday was another such day when torrential rains continued to cause major trouble to the residents of the country.

In fact, in southern areas of Thailand at least 12 people have been killed due to severe flooding. Not only this, several villages have been submerged. As per the Thailand’s interior ministry, hundreds and thousands of people have been affected as water levels have reached up to roofs in several parts.

Transport has also suffered a beating with flight services also being disrupted. At present, rescue efforts are in full force for those who remain stranded in many areas. Heavy rains are expected to continue for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Several schools have been damaged along with power cables leading to power outages. Residents are using rubber rings to be able to cross flood hit roads in villages in Thailand.

The Samui International Airport in Thailand had to suspend its flight operations yesterday as inclement weather conditions. The southern parts have already been observing flooding rains, yesterday, these rains were also witnessed over the Ko Samui Island.

Several hundreds of passengers remained stranded as domestic flights remained suspended due to bad weather conditions. Between Samui and Bangkok, around 12 flights were cancelled only yesterday. Out of the stranded passengers, there were several people who had to catch a flight from the Bangkok airport for their countries.

During the last 24 hours, heavy to extremely heavy rains have been recorded in several parts of Thailand. From 8:30 am yesterday, Sawi Agromet recorded a whopping 337 mm of rain, Nakhonsi Thammarat 167 mm, Koh Samui 27 mm, and Chumphon 107 mm.

These torrential rains are attributed to the presence of a weather system in the form of a low-pressure area over South Andaman Sea. The system has the potential to intensify into a well-marked low and furthermore into a depression.

Thus, during the next 24 to 48 hours, several parts of Thailand are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rains. So much so that travelers are advised to avoid visiting some of the very famous islands in Thailand at least for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Public Health Ministry mobilizes medical staff to provide healthcare to flood victims in South

NONTHABURI, 8 January 2017 (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is on alert for the outbreak of flood-related diseases and has mobilized medical staff to provide healthcare to flood victims in the Southern region, says an official.

MOPH Permanent Secretary Sophon Mekthon has disclosed that the MOPH's provincial offices in nine flood affected provinces have dispatched medical teams to provide medical services to flood victims, both in the flooded residential areas and evacuation centers.

Teams of medical staff will provide medical care to patients, particularly the disabled and the elderly trapped inside flooded houses. The public are advised to call the hotline 1669 for medical services and health related emergencies around the clock.

Hospitals in the southern region of the country are still operating as usual, but the situation at Cha-uat Hospital in Nakhon Si Thammarat province and Lang Suan Hospital in Chumphon province are still worrisome, as flooding in the area has not receded yet.

Watching CNN just now. Started a report on the flooding and was immediately cut off with message "regular broadcast will return shortly". Appears the gov wants no coverage of the flooding by nasty farangs.

^ A Thai friend told me just a couple of days ago that CNN was being censored any time they reported on Thailand. Don't know how she found out about it, since she doesn't watch CNN.

Could be a blanket ban. I don't know but CNN had lots of reports on death of the king broadcasted.

Gov even cut the CNN weather report when rainfall and flooding in the south mentioned. Silly buggers.

Maybe it's just mid-winter in Europe? Especially in the north like Norway, Finland Sweden and Russia. Minus 20 is seasonal average for these places.

During the 2011 flood Yingluck was blamed by political opponents and media for failng to prevent the flood. When bad things happen, it is Thai norm to blame someone else, I'm surprised nary a peep pointing the finger of blame in this case.

Govt prepares for more heavy rains in flood-affected areas

BANGKOK, 15 January 2017 (NNT) - The government has made preparations for more heavy rains in the southern region by urgently pumping the flood waters out. People in the flood-affected areas have been warned to brace themselvess for the heavy rains.

Government Spokesman Lt.Gen. Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the flooding in most southern provinces had already improved but some areas in Surat Thai and Nakhon Si Thammarat were still heavily flooded. More than 70 pumps and 50 water propelling machines had been installed and many water courses had been dredged in preparation for heavy rains from 16-18 December, said the spokesman.

Lt.Gen. Sansern said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had instructed the governors of the flood-affected provinces to warn people and manage their flood prevention systems well during this period. The premier also instructed the Ministry of Interior to create flow routes in an effort to prevent flooding in the long run.

RID braces for more rains during 16-18 January

BANGKOK, 15 January 2017 (NNT) – Royal Irrigation Department (RID) Deputy Director General Somkiat Prachamwong has disclosed that the RID is preparing to install additional equipment at flood risk areas in the southern region, as a precaution for the expected precipitation in the coming days.

The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast that during 16-18 January 2017, there will be heavy rain in some areas especially Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat province.

During 19-20 January 2017, the department forecasts heavy rains in some areas of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani and Narathiwat province.

Flooding in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Trang, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat has receded and the situation has returned to normal. Surat Thani province and Nakhon Si Thammarat province are still flooded in some low lying areas, such as the Cha-uat and Pak Phanang districts.

Currently about 340 million cubic meters of flood water remain in the area. Officials deem it necessary to consider storing the water for usage during the dry season.

It is expected that the situation will return to normal within 1-2 days with no additional precipitation.
